Watch this: Dalek Bluetooth speaker is world's loudest

LAS VEGAS -- The CES show floor is under audio attack by a one-Dalek army. Massive Audio, maker of car audio gear, unleashed a full-size Dalek studded with the company's equipment. The "Doctor Who" villain was made by hand over the course of three months.

Massive Audio is advertising the "Massive Dalek" as the world's loudest and largest Bluetooth speaker. It's definitely effective geek-bait. I zeroed in on it with no problem, just following the flashing lights and unmistakable voice. This is the sort of stunt that makes the Consumer Electronics Show fun.

Massive Audio sales manager and "Doctor Who" fan Jeremy Larsson came up with the initial idea to build the beast. It truly is wreaking a bit of havoc at CES. "It gets so loud, they almost kicked it out," he said.

The Dalek sports 40 speakers, a honking subwoofer, and Bluetooth connection that lets a user control it remotely, triggering it to threaten to exterminate the human species, or simply play a rocking tune at a very high volume. The team that built it hand-turned parts like the plunger arm on a lathe. The attention to detail is impressive.

The Dalek will be touring special events and will eventually be put up for auction with the proceeds going to charity. It certainly represents a creative application for car-stereo gear that sets it apart from the other manufacturers that just use actual cars to advertise their wares.

There is one major drawback, though. "It does have some trouble with stairs," Larsson admitted. Perhaps the next-gen version will have levitation.
