Intel's Next Unit of Computing, a tiny 4.5x4.4-inch PC, has hit the shops.
There are two versions, with the incredibly memorable designations of DC3217BY and DC3217IYE. At this stage, we find it helpful to remember them as "the red one" and "the black one" — and both have been spotted on PC Case Gear selling for AU$389 and AU$379, respectively.
Both feature a Core i3 3217U, three rear-facing USB 2.0 ports, one front facing, and an HDMI port. The red one has a Thunderbolt port, while the black one has gigabit Ethernet and a second HDMI port.
The user is required to install their own RAM and storage. Two SO-DIMM 1333MHz slots are supplied, and there's a full sized, M-SATA compatible mini PCI-E slot in there, as well as a half-sized mini PCI-E slot.
We'd imagine that this'll really open up once Intel gets some Core i5 loving inside, but for now, if you want pint-sized power, this box is it. Let's just hope Intel has addressed some of the thermal issues.
