HTC Nexus 9 to debut October 16, rumor says

The rumored time frame matches up with previous launches of major Android releases.

The wait for the Nexus 9 may be over soon.

Google could introduce new members of the Nexus family in October, according to a new report. An "anonymous tipster" reporting to tech site MoDaCo's co-founder Paul O'Brien predicts that HTC will debut the Nexus 9 tablet on October 16.

In terms of substantiated rumors, a tweet referring to a random tipster doesn't offer much to bank on.

However, assuming for a moment that the date and phone name prove accurate, we could also anticipate the formal release of Android along with it (whenever the next tablet arrives), since Google famously uses new Nexus phones and tablets as the debut device for any major OS update.

The mid-October timing certainly makes sense and matches up with previous autumn launches of Android.

In addition, the Nexus 5 smartphone is set to celebrate its first birthday on October 31. Indications suggest that Motorola is in the running for this year's phone model.

The last few months have given way to numerous leaks and rumors for a Nexus 9 tablet. Most recently, images of a keyboard case emerged purporting to belong to the device. Last week saw chatter around an Nvidia complaint against Samsung and Qualcomm which some believe may have outed a Tegra K1-powered Nexus 9.

In addition to the powerful processor, other hardware for the HTC Nexus 9 could include an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2GB RAM. Known by its Volantis code name, the tablet may be just one of multiple tablets due from HTC.

HTC declined to comment on the rumored tablet.
