If you'd have asked us a week ago, we would never have guessed that Nintendo's monumentally popular Wii console would be struggling in the first round of our Greatest Gadget of the 21st Century tournament, and against the USB key of all devices.
We know Rory made a convincing case when he argued that the USB stick deserved to wear the crown, with its perfect blend of high-capacity storage, utter simplicity and portability -- but we didn't expect such a high voter turnout for such an inauspicious gadget.
Or maybe it suggests that while sales figures are through the roof, there are plenty of gadget fans not satisfied with the way their Wii has performed over the years. Perhaps despite all the hype, four years later the Wii just doesn't look like the gaming revolution it once appeared to be.
But maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves. After all, the Wii is beating the humble USB stick, if only by a slim percentage. And it's only the second day of voting, so everything could change by Sunday night.
Still, if there's one device we suspected would have an easy ride in the first round, it was the Wii. What do you guys think? Is this a case of Wii-ennui? Or are the downtrodden USB fans finally rising up in revolt? Let us know on our Facebook wall or in the comments.
