Gone are the glory days of software development, when little-guy developers were often on the same playing field as the big boys.

That's a shame, as there are plenty of good coders out there with good ideas. Which brings us to today's deal: for a limited time, Tumbling Dice Software is offering the Super Writer word processor for $9.95 when you apply coupon code TDS-45K2D478BJ at checkout. Regular price: $19.95.

I'll just stop right here and note that there are any number of word processing programs you can get for free, everything from Google Docs to OpenOffice to Kingsoft Writer Free. But here's your chance to support a small, independent developer that makes a solid product.

Super Writer offers all the word-processing basics in an attractive, Ribbon-style interface. It supports things like headers, footers, tables, and hyperlinks, and it's compatible with all popular document formats, including DOCX and EPUB. There's also a feature called Super Find/Replace, which lets you replace a word or phrase in all the Word documents contained in a specified folder. (Usually find/replace is limited to a single, open document.)

The program has especially robust PDF support, including the options to password-protect PDFs, add notes and settings, merge multiple files, and turn existing PDFs into booklets.

I especially like the omnipresent folder tree, which lets you navigate to various files without having to open a special dialog box. (Duh! Now there's an obvious feature I've never seen in any other word processor.)

My one complaint is that it doesn't support styles, a feature I use now and again in Microsoft Word. Also, there's no built-in help file (intentional, to keep costs low, according to the developer), though I suspect anyone who's ever used a word processing program will have no trouble learning this one.

If you need a good word processor but don't want the "bulk" or expense of a full-blown suite, Super Writer looks to me like a fine choice. And for a mere 10 bucks, it's extremely easy on the wallet. (By the way, there's a 30-day trial if you want to test the program before buying.)

Bonus deal: Want to mirror your laptop on your TV? That's a great option for playing games, watching Netflix, viewing photos, and so on. Of course, the last thing you want is to be tethered to an HDMI cable, right? If you're willing to splurge a bit, you can cut that cord: ShopTronics (via Amazon) has the Nyrius Aries Pro Wireless HDMI Transmitter for laptops for $199.96 shipped. I can't say that's cheap, but it's $50 cheaper than the regular price -- and the customer reviews are off-the-charts positive.
