Quick housekeeping note: If you tried to grab the free Wired subscription I mentioned a couple weeks ago, you've probably received a notification that you weren't "eligible" for the promotion. Turns out that freebie was only for folks who'd spent at least $25 at HSN, which wasn't at all clear on the promo page. Most likely it was a post-purchase landing page that shouldn't have been visible to the Internet at large. Sometimes freebies that seem too good to be true turn out to be exactly that.

Anyway, on to business. Sorry to do back-to-back speaker deals, but this one was too unique to pass up. For a limited time, and while supplies last, Outdoor Technology is offering the Turtle Shell portable Bluetooth speaker for $79.95 shipped. (No coupon code required! Just be sure to use that link.) That's $50 off the list price and at least $20 less than you'll find it elsewhere. Yep, it's another Cheapskate exclusive!

This is not your average Bluetooth speaker, which is obvious just from looking at it. It's all flat, angled, triangular surfaces, and it comes in your choice of six colors.

What's more, true to its name, this is no delicate piece of electronics. The Turtle Shell is dustproof, shockproof, and water-resistant, meaning it can go just about anywhere: beach, pool, park, factory, war zone, etc. Its external controls -- play/pause, volume, track skip -- are rubberized and fully protected. It even has a threaded camera-standard mount so you can affix it to... um... a tripod? Actually, that's pretty cool; with a little extra hardware you could install the speaker on your bike handlebars or even a helmet.

Powered by a rechargeable battery, the Turtle Shell can run 9-10 hours, according to Outdoor Technology. Though fairly compact and weighing just 0.7 pounds, it packs two speakers and a passive bass radiator, the latter promising bigger, better thump than you get from most portable speakers.

Icing on the cake: it's also a speakerphone.

CNET hasn't reviewed the Turtle Shell, but check out the 40-plus mostly gushing user reviews at Amazon. Great sound and impressive bass are the common refrains.

I might have a hard time recommending this at $129.95, but at $79.95 it's a really solid buy -- far more versatile than most Bluetooth speakers, and with a lot more color options. Your thoughts?

Bonus deal: Win a TV! CNET is giving away the best-performing TV they've ever tested, the Panasonic TC-PZT60. This 60-inch plasma has it all: 3D, apps, Wi-Fi, and "picture-quality perfection." To enter, just sign up for the CNET Insider newsletter.

Bonus deal No. 2: Need to convert a video to a different format? Granted, that's a lot less necessary these days, but if you have the need, at least you don't have to pay for the priviliege: WonderFox Video Converter Factory Pro (Win) is free of charge for a limited time. Normally $29.95, this utility supports all mainstream video and audio formats, and includes conversion presets for all manner of mobile devices.
