The HTC Evo V 4G is one of the most powerful no-contract Android phones you can buy. Virgin Mobile

Feeling the smartphone blues? You know the kind I mean: the gloom of paying ungodly sums of money to your carrier for the duration of that inevitable two-year contract?

Maybe it's not so inevitable -- and maybe the sums aren't so ungodly. By opting for a no-contract phone from a carrier with decent monthly rates, you can banish those blues.

To wit: Virgin Mobile has the HTC Evo V 4G Android smartphone for $239.99 shipped (add it to your cart to get that price). It normally sells for $299.99, so right off the bat you're saving $60.

But here's where it really gets good: Virgin Mobile has service plans that start at $35 per month. That's not some hobbled, no-frills plan, either: for $35 you get 300 voice minutes and "unlimited" messaging and data. (You actually get 2.5GB of full-speed data per month. If you exceed that cap, Virgin dials you back to 2G-ish speeds.)

As for the phone, it's a powerhouse, for a no-contract model, anyway. It's got a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch screen, Android 4.0, mobile hot-spot capability, and even a 5-megapixel camera that can snap 3D photos. The screen can display glasses-free 3D as well. Oh, and let's not forget: 4G! (Just make sure to check the coverage map so you know if 4G service is available in your area.)

Virgin Mobile customers collectively rated the Evo V 4.4 stars out of 5, and I've seen lots of other positive ratings around and about. If there's one knock, it's the relatively bulky size of the phone.

But for the serious cheapskate who wants a powerful smartphone without the two-year contract and $70-plus monthly bill, this is a hard deal to pass up. Your thoughts?

Bonus deal: Need more HDMI ports? Who doesn't! Today only, Daily Steals has the refurbished Monoprice 4x2 True Matrix HDMI switch for $19.99, plus $4.99 for shipping. It features four inputs, two outputs, and a wireless remote.
