Who says you can't get something for nothing?

For the next 10 days, you can not only get something for nothing, you can get double. For this Cheapskate exclusive, Pogoplug is offering 10GB of cloud storage free of charge. Regular folks off the street get a mere 5GB.

Pogoplug, of course, makes the popular eponymous gizmos that plug into your router, effectively turning any USB drive into a network- and Internet-accessible storage. But the company is also pushing hard to become a cloud player, as evidenced by this latest offering.

That 10GB of space isn't quite as versatile as, say, Dropbox, but it has value all the same. For starters, you can drag and drop items from your desktop directly to the my.pogoplug.com site inside your browser. And those files are accessible from any other PC or mobile device. If you upload music, movies, and photos, you can stream them wherever, whenever.

Speaking of wherever, whenever, Pogoplug offers mobile apps for Android and iOS. In addition to giving you access to your files (streaming included), they can automatically back up your photos and videos. That feature alone might make this a worthwhile option for some users.

Want to use your 10GB for desktop backup? Install the Pogoplug Companion utility, which is available for Windows, Mac, and even Linux. Although it doesn't afford syncing capabilities in the traditional sense, it will sync any folders you choose to your Pogoplug cloud.

So, yeah, not at all a bad deal for a grand total of zero dollars. Want more space? Pogoplug also offers unlimited cloud storage (with no file-size restrictions, either) for $4.95 per month, which is one of the better deals I've seen for an unlimited plan.

As far as I know, the company is placing no cap on the number of people who can sign up for this -- meaning it shouldn't "sell out." That said, you've got only 10 days to take advantage of this fab freebie, so don't wait!

Bonus deal: For the next 48 hours, popular Windows optimization utility WinPatrol Plus is on sale for just 99 cents. Normally a license runs $29.95. Among other things, the program can show you a list of all startup programs and give you information about each one. It lets you delay selected startup programs so your computer boots faster, and can notify you of any changes to Windows' auto-update settings, which might be caused by malware. I don't love the interface, but I do love the price.
