Freebie Friday: Get a 50GB Box cloud account for free

This is quite possibly the best cloud-storage giveaway ever. What's the catch? I'll let you know when I find one.

Recently, cloud-storage service Box was offering free 25GB accounts to new customers.

I meant to write it up, but other things got in the way. Good thing, too, because now Box is offering free 50GB accounts to new customers. My foot-dragging is your gain.

Before I go any further, take note that the signup page says "Dell Exclusive Offer." There's no indication you need to actually be a Dell customer or employee or anything like that, but there's always the chance Box will get flooded with unintended/unwanted sign-ups and decide to end or even rescind the offer. (Anyone remember the SiriusXM Internet Radio debacle?)

That said, I just signed up, and it looks like I'm good to go. Your mileage may vary.

Box, of course, is one of the older, larger, and more established cloud-storage services. I mention that because people tend to get skittish about handing their data to unknown and/or startup sky-folk.

Normally when you sign up for a freebie account, you get 5GB of space. This is 10 times that much, enough to actually be practical for say, backing up big ol' music or photo libraries. The only hitch: the maximum file size is 250MB. That precludes any big ol' videos you might want to send skyward.

Box offers apps for pretty much every mobile platform, and now has a desktop utility for Dropbox-style folder syncing (one area where Box used to fall seriously short). You can also share files with friends, family members, co-workers, etc., with just a few clicks or taps. In other words, Box is a full-blooded cloud-storage service.

And 50GB free, for life, with no strings attached is just too good to pass up. Even if you don't need this kind of space today, you might need it tomorrow -- so sign up while you can! I have no idea how long this offer will run.

Bonus freebie: If you're willing to sign up for a Green Man Gaming account (free) and a Playfire account (also free), then link those two accounts, you can get four free PC games this weekend: Ninja Blade, Superstar V8 Next Challenge, and Unstoppable Gorg. Combined value: over $50!
