Capping off the Summer Game Fest's live kickoff event ahead of E3 2021 on Thursday, Elden Ring, one of the most anticipated games from E3 2019, finally has a new official trailer and a release date: Jan. 21, 2022.

Elden Ring is a collaboration between Dark Souls developer FromSoftware and Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin. The game's director Hidetaka Miyazaki and the development team at FromSoftware are responsible for writing Elden Ring's narrative but outsourced the world, lore and mythos to Martin.

This is going to be a long journey.

The trailer narration mentions the Tarnished, which will be the name given to the player's character, according to the official Elden Ring lore. A war between demigods looking to stake their claim to a shard of the broken Elden Ring has created a war called The Shattering. The Tarnished will need to wield the power of the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord.

Veteran players of the FromSoftware games will be familiar with some of the elements shown in the game including the giant bosses and blue phantoms that can be summoned to assist you. The biggest change for players will be the horse, which can be summoned and apparently can climb up walls or fly across canyons.

The Tarnished also appears to be more agile than some of the previous characters in the FromSoftware games. It seems like the developer took some of the movement found in Sekiro to give players more options when battling enemies.

Elden Ring was unveiled at E3 2019, with a trailer shown during Microsoft's keynote. It shows a brutal, harsh fantasy setting as a narrator explains chaos has been wrought since "someone or something" smashed the Elden Ring. But we got little in the way of specifics, other than the assurance that the game would launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Those who order the Xbox One and PS4 version will receive a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5
