Doctor Who: Worlds in Time puts the MMO in TARDIS

Time and space is yours to explore as Doctor Who gets its own MMO. Doctor Who: Worlds in Time will allow you to hurtle through both time and space alongside fans from around the world in a massively multiplayer online game based on the smash-hit BBC show.

The game will be unveiled by Three Rings, the developer behind Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates, at this week's San Francisco Game Developers' Conference.

Worlds in Time will see you exploring new worlds and encountering alien races both friendly and hellbent on galactic conquest. Gameplay involves "time-bending puzzles" and "pulse-pounding challenges", all the while socialising and co-operating with other users in the global community. It's aimed at all ages.

The BBC wouldn't tell us exactly who your character is, but it appears you'll meet the Doctor rather than playing him.

If you do have a hankering to don the friendly Time Lord's bow tie, or Amy Pond's microskirt, there's a range of Who games available. Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and feisty companion Karen Gillen appear in The Mazes of Timeon the iPad and iPhone, Evacuation Earth for the Nintendo DS and Return To Earth for the Wii -- complete with Sonic Screwdriver Wiimote. There's also The Adventure Games, online 'interactive episodes'.

Development is "well under way" on Worlds in Time, and the game is expected to launch later this year. Doctor Who returns to our screens in Spring.
