Porsche 918 RSR Racing Lab conceptFor when a 10,000rpm V8 just isn't enough.
In a world where hybrid and performance are no longer strange bad fellows, I guess this car shouldn't be so shocking, but it is. This is the Porsche 918 RSR racing concept highly related to the 918 Spyder we saw about a year ago, which has been green-lighted for production, but check this guy out back here mid-shifts is a 560 horsepower V8 spinning up to 105 rpm. That is an even interesting in a car like this. Come in the cabin. Here's where it gets really interesting. Right there where the passenger seat would be, this is a race concept began, is a flywheel accumulator. Inside that circular casting, a flywheel spins at 36,000 rpm maintaining the energy to give electricity back on the fly to do electric motors one on each of the front wheels. This car will do 0 to 60 in 3 seconds or a little bit more, but also with incredible efficiency and you would imagine great range. It could really change racing strategy in terms of pit stops and all that. Now of course, the car is super light. Look, there's carbon fiber everywhere. That is the interior kind of a combination of racing, but also civilized. I mean beautiful leather appointments, a cool set of LCD panels across the top there, but at the same time a bunch of real greedy racing gauges and lock-out switches. So, Porsche is making an interesting message here that they've got some real world technology for high performance future production cars also being shown in a race vernacular. The power that goes into the accumulator comes from regenerative breaking. So when you break, you spin it up. When you need power, it gives back. Now again a racing concept means does not gonna be for sale anytime soon. All the racing library on it as such tells you that, but the Spyder version as I mentioned was green-lighted for production back in July of 2010, you know, $670,000 of copy limited production, but it does show a future of where Porsche is gonna take a dual power mode high-performance powertrain.
