Come along as we chat about the 2018 Ford F-150 Diesel

Cars
We're here today to look at the best selling vehicle in America, the 2018 Ford F150. But, this one is a little bit special. That's right, we are rolling with. Hey is this a diesel? Yes. Can I ride with you, I've got some questions. Great. Come ride with me in the diesel Ford F-150. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Okay, so Ford truck, diesel, I'm super excited. I got some questions. Okay. The first question is probably gonna be the one that everyone asks, when you tell it it's a diesel. How much stuff can I tow with this? You can tow a lot. So with this configuration, which is the Lariat tram line four by four, with the short bed, we can tow 10,000 700 pounds. So that's what, five Miadas? Maybe closer to five and-a-half. That's a unit of measure. [LAUGH] I thought about picking up a truck, a small truck, and towing my Miada to the track, making it more race focused, as opposed to street-ready. But, I just don't like backing up. [LAUGHING] And it's like you can't tow things and never back up. And I just don't want to be in that situation where I'm. Everyone's watching you. Yeah. And people are looking at me. It's the worst. So the F150 has a pro-trailer backup assist and I got to try it out at the launch a couple months ago. And basically it takes all of the backwardness out of backing up a trailer. So when you're trying to do it yourself, you're backing up, if you want the trailer to go to the right, you have to turn the wheel to the left. But with the pro trailer backup assist, you just use this little knob down here. So you want the trailer to go to the right, you just turn the knob to the right. So it takes out that switch that you have to make in mind. I've actually used the system. What? Was sure of the expedition last year. Okay. Okay.. You can get it on this. It's kind of interesting because you have to do a little math at the beginning with like how long your trailer is and all of that just so the system knows how to do it. Yeah, but most people only have one trailer, right? Yeah. So you just set it up once Belt. Well pros they just put their hand down here at the bottom and then if you want to move your trailer to the right you just move your hand to the right. It's real easy. I didn't come here to learn about that. Just saying. 10,000 pounds. How much torque? This one has 440 pound feet of torque. Really. Yeah, that's a lot. Thought it'd be a higher number than that. Why did you think would be a higher number? I guess my scale is off cuz I'd been in a Hellcat owie and it's got 650 pound feet and Yeah, cuz these are two comparable cars, the Hellcat and the F150. Great. But It's a totally different kind of torque, you know that! Yeah, I mean, I guess, all right, okay. So it's a truck- Right- So you need that torque to be low-down, or like an electric motor. Right, and this is for work, this is not for performance, right? Right. It's only got 250 horsepower. If you wanna have a Ford that is performance And a truck, just, you wanna go get a Raptor, or you wanna wait for the Ranger Raptor, which I really hope is coming to town! My god, please come to [CROSSTALK] Okay, so this is serious business torque- Yeah, this is all for the business. Pulling stuff up hills torque, work truck torque. People are gonna using this to maybe drive long distances to work sites, to tow things, and things like that. And because it's your work truck, and you're using it for business, you wanna keep your costs down >What's the fuel economy like? Those are your operating costs, your diesel. Yes, because diesel is really good for fuel economy. Right? So, this has got 20 miles per gallon in the city, 25 on the highway and 22 combined. So, people that drive cars, they're probably like, those are terrible numbers. But when you look at the class. That's better than the Ram 1500 diesel, and it's way better than anything else in the class that's gas powered. Mm-hm. But there's some new technology that's coming from Ram with the 48 volt mild hybrid system. Yeah, the email earlier. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the eTorque thing, so it gives you a little bit more torque off the line. It gives you a little bit of electric assist when you need it. And Ram says that it's going It's going to bring the fuel economy numbers up by 10%, which would bring it up close to the Ford F150 diesel. Right, and also you'd be paying gas prices. And that's a gasoline engine, so even less money. Right, yeah. But, we haven't seen it yet. And it was supposed to be here and I was supposed to drive it, but it wasn't ready yet. So So it got delayed? Yeah, I don't know. So they're like working out the kinks on it [UNKNOWN] That's actually interesting because you want a truck to be reliable. If trucks are anything, they got to be reliable, they got to last forever. On one hand they are still working the kinks out on that hybrid, then do it. Take as much time as you need to get it done because we want to be reliable but on the other hand A diesel just works now. Yeah. [LAUGH] It does, it'll roll forever now. So if you're looking at a work truck, the diesel's probably very tempting. Especially even for people who are a little more tech savvy and maybe want to maybe wait for the 48 volt. Yeah. Diesels just looks better. [SOUND] And you always have this idea in your mind, like, yeah, it's a guy on a construction site. It's just like a meat head. He's swinging the hammer, bewr, football. Yeah. And they just need the big dumb truck. But the F150 might be a big truck but it is not a dumb truck. Right. There is a WiFi hotspot. There is a 110 outlet that's grounded so you could use your laptop. There is a 12 volt charger. There is USBs. Charges all over the place. This is a truck that can keep you connected while you're on the go. It's like a mobile office. Yeah, you got sync three here, you got Android Auto, CarPlay, all that stuff. It's a lot of a technology crammed in the front her and I guess it's because a truck has to be Everything. Yeah. Like it can't just be a truck. It also has to be a family sedan and a mobile office. It has to do all of those things at the same time. Yeah, and as a daily driver, I mean, this truck is really good, especially the 10-speed, automatic transmission. You would think that with 10-speed, it would just Speed. Like searching all over the place, especially when you're climbing a grade. Sounds like too many gears. Yeah, it sounds like too many gears, but it really doesn't. It's really good at selecting the gear that I want and the RPMs that I want. And when it does shift, it does so really, really Imperceptibly and the way it's mated to not only the diesel but also the other engine options, which are available in the F150, it's all just a really really tightly engineered power plant. Yeah I drove, I've driven this transmission in the Expedition with the eco boost engine and it's fantastic. Yeah. Like it's always in the right gear Even if it has to skip over a couple of gears to get where it needs to and there's no hunting around and going [SOUND] it's just like boom, there's your power. You need your power. Yeah, it's really good I mean if I were in the market for a truck and I needed something To tow, I would definitely look at the diesel. I mean, it makes towing so much easier. But isn't this the best version of the F150? Well, I mean, I think it depends on what you're going to do with it, right? If you know you're only gonna tow once in awhile, but maybe the gas is gonna be your better deal, because the gas prices are lower than diesel. But if you know you're gonna be towing a lot, and you know you're gonna be driving long. The distances, you might want to do the math and see if the extra price for diesel fuel is going to balance out in the wind. But which one is Andy Hall going. Andy Hall wants the Raptor. Yeah. [LAUGH] That's what I figured. I mean, come on. [LAUGH] So I guess that's- Did I answer all your questions? That I had about this. Right. So You can just go ahead and let me out here. All right, cool. Yeah, in the middle of nowhere. Cuz you've already completely jacked my video. This was supposed to be my one shining moment in the F-150, and I had to share the spotlight with you, so get out. The day is young. You'll bring it home. Get out. Bye! Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Ow. Every time. [LAUGH] [MUSIC] of course you can't just get the diesel engine with any old trim line, No, no, no. You have to jump up to the Lariat trim, which will cost you about $45,000. Which is a huge jump from the XL which is $27,000. But this baby here, with all of it's options 63,000 bucks and change, so my advice to you is figure out exactly what you're gonna use your vehicle for before you spring the extra coin for the diesel. Now if you'll excuse me, I probably should get Antoine. It's kinda hot today.
