Auto Tech
OnStar decides not to be -- BM w.'s M five make some noise and we get our truck gone. -- -- Wayne Cunningham in the studio with Antuan Goodwin and this is cnet's car tech live Thursday the twenty ninth of September 2011. An -- story is that when we talked about last week a little bit misses a complete reversal on star last. We had decided. We're gonna launch a new privacy policy that says. After you. Unsubscribe from our service. And even if you buy a used car with -- and it it would still -- -- information about where you're going. And -- where the cars going at least and send that back -- -- an -- or use that data collection for real people think nefarious purposes but probably not. But this week and there is so much hue and cry about that there's so much public rejection and even the senator from New York -- Schumer. -- at -- brutal letter to GM about that and promised potential investigations that they were there was lot of hue and cry and so on -- -- this week to send out a note saying we're not gonna do that. We're not gonna -- that privacy policy change which was supposed to come into effect that December 1. Yeah I mean -- -- in the very least. They're upfront about what they planned on doing and they're being up credibility now plan on not doing. It. But I mean it that does seem kind of ill conceived the hole was an especially in the week. Community issues that Google and Apple and the lawsuits about. People's privacy. And just people being more aware of what what information they're giving to who and why. It does -- applicant -- ill thought out planned to Begin. Are you and the way they present and it initially once people who dug in -- that privacy policy that they were going to -- unveil. Today. You know died nobody wants their movements to be -- you know things that really thinks that eligible known wanna go and Costco or. In -- -- -- and custom but. No the problem -- this is that OnStar didn't really conveyed the benefit a potential benefits of this and one thing they were going to do. Which is in there at their musical on notice saying that we're not gonna do this now the -- president actually said. Well we would have you know provided people that have OnStar equipped vehicles that don't subscribe with. Urgent information about natural disaster uses her quote. And other other things that affect the vehicles so they they would have. Used -- have some benefits due to the people that still had the equipment in the -- not the subscription rate and -- sponsor was smart they would -- pay even if you unsubscribe from -- -- still gonna offer you these services and then you know in this in the small text it -- said and we'll still collect data about where you ago. And somebody would CNET small -- -- -- blown up in their -- anyway they can have them. But I mean actually beacon have been. They could've been -- that the perfect storm for me here would have been their upfront about what they're gonna do they're also a -- about the benefits. And union heat the vegetable world you know there I mean it could have been a really good thing -- -- Into an accident -- -- we may still call you the airbag is often makes your -- people like it or missiles and an ambulance her way again as the daily that missile. Maybe Nestle amber to answer is analogous kind of seems like no other and we were gonna do -- but it revealed about. We're now. Going to anymore. That just yet definitely communications that are so if you have an OnStar equipped vehicle and you decide -- -- Not -- -- your service and that they -- they won't protect you at least. Now what they say they when they want. Uneasy on connector pickax and the premiere of the car. You found something -- -- about Debian and the new BM WM five right so -- to -- implant launches. 404656400. But 506 -- -- to. Who lack the power. Four point four liter engine twins role and twin Turbo. V8 engine so it's got two twin girls service of or -- total so that in twin -- twin -- power I think they're calling it. Something between our twin Turbo that's a superhero. Powers activate at and so big beefy India and that's with -- -- -- -- ever. Apparently it's not loud enough. Due to affected the impact cabin -- -- five series cabin is super quiet to Begin with. And new ways and -- you know. But -- a laws and need auto makers. If -- had to keep their engines quieter just have -- that you know blaring on the road in setting off car alarms. You can't really hear the -- of the engine from intent of -- -- so instead of doing what Porsche or report have done in basically kind of putting a sound to from the engine bay into the -- that you can hear it. BMW's using the car stereo to artificially generate. The rumbling hum of the engine using the speakers in your car -- -- it's tied into the ECU. So as you read the in January as the union goes through different alludes. That sound that you -- You -- -- replicated. Through the of the car stereo system. Using the speakers. But did have any sense of that sound is any relation to the sound that the engine would actually produce I -- it -- mean if anybody knows -- the implant and does sound like it. Probably BMW so mean they say that. It's -- it it accurately replicate the sound of the end. I have seen some videos of of the M five being tested by European. I'm a journalist and you can still barely hear -- I you can still barely hear the engine from -- -- -- car and I can only assume that that the vehicles in those tests were using this system its its Latin American. Only. System Norton and no there's not a microphone in the engine days it's actually just a computer generating -- Yeah yeah it's it's interesting because BMWs and obviously gone -- this. This luxury element in so those -- are very nice sound dead and cabins and and that is gonna block out that noise. But -- -- -- engines have never really been noted for their their. And it really pounding exhaust note. Yeah it's I don't it's it's kind of it's weird to me the -- is. And in their of course -- the first thing people search shouting is like on the -- of the -- their card now and afflict only people who don't know anything about cars they're gonna care about this and they're only too dumb to notice and chances are -- gravity of -- the automatic transmissions of music that's -- -- But I mean. Adulthood. I figure like BMW probably won't do it wrong. And if you really care that much about it there's probably some through -- turn off. It's a weird little thing and what on the -- -- -- is -- -- in the motorcycle world. You hear these Harley is another. -- -- -- -- big blah blah blah I don't like -- all -- -- -- and on the BMW's same amount horsepower same amount of displacement these nice slick for Saunders and He is here a slight whirring sound and out of those engines again because. Yet there and entering Kevin and are only interested in making a lot of noise and I think about -- with the cars I remember a while back we did a test. How we had Dell was at the M three -- and the CE 63 eaten they -- the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG. And we compared the exhaust notes of both of those cars -- And the C 63 and He was much more interest steam because that was a six point three -- -- you know the again -- and lot of sent him out where the BMW's -- more like just a nice smooth whirring sound and -- and really interested in a lot of petty explosive. Force. I think it's just interesting that auto makers that all of this. All of this energy -- effort into making the car quiet into making. You know it's for an editorial -- and and then they have to go back at the sound bad people will complain they can't -- the engine and I mean I guess it's important. If you're driving me and -- with a five speed security engine note. But if you gravity with you know the DC -- or an automatic transmission you know whatever technology they're gonna use in this. Important to hear it. I mean like the BB the -- 37 -- that we have right now you can and a barely hear the engine in that. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- If you're if you're just the key driver who wants to go -- in in -- can be -- shift in yourself and I mean. Not really that important to hear the sound of the car and you could always just wonder Windiz -- that -- do that anymore. That -- possibility to I think the electronic sound that dealt electronically generated ten I think is -- may be a step too far. I can see either the sound ducks into the cap and you know running. From the engine -- immediate Sony could close if you don't wanna hear that -- but I and that's a that's you know real sound. But the generated sent I don't know -- yeah I could see it -- for shifting them. Nothing is anytime car start doing stuff like -- Like Honda has there. -- active noise cancellation which is the opposite of this use the car speakers. Two produced out of fees sound. To cancel out road noise and engine noise. And it's like every two months Begin in email and somebody in light effect in north inflation commodities crap how to get rid of an I -- -- -- Built in and and maybe they didn't put him as much sound deadening -- in the the doors either saying that He -- I don't wanna. Some like looking at you know you know a couple months from now and in emails from people in their dislike of the ability sound thing -- How do I get rid -- it we're gonna be talking about ECU hacks that -- cancel out whatever signals. Then there. Right and what should be quieter engine action that. Even quieter is is Newport cylinder engines that -- Mercedes-Benz is gonna. Start rolling now in the US. These are. Believe direct injection engines and Turbo chargers yet so. You get plenty part of -- you get as much power as a Mercedes-Benz -- had a -- owner in the US for quite some time. -- that they instance that's He had spec. This seat Lucent and -- -- the 200 and are radically with the designation that was of that little tiny seed pet spec is the last one that I can remember. Yet to see is the smallest car they've sold in the US the C class -- they do have a class and B class and in Europe and other parts of the world and those. Use small engines and those no problem but they maintain this big luxury car. Idea theme in the US and so the -- is their smallest. And and it apparently the new C though is that going to get one of these four cylinders and they're also gonna bring a indeed to the US that's a -- in their product planning. -- -- those are small -- with -- and they have the Mercedes-Benz. Niceties you know that you know luxury element so you get a premium there. But yet yet suggesting that these these for sellers can can be just as capable as said -- six I don't think any but he'll miss the V6 in. In these cars. The other talking about a C 250 sedan which is going to be a one point eight liter Turbo. And bats -- -- of course 201 horsepower from the yet what -- what I'm interested in to teach when He nine county -- Because and I'm learning that -- is the number I care about and that most people care about is that that's the -- note that the push in this small you're back. -- and it's not off -- -- -- see. A forming -- more work -- than horsepower. That it looks promising. I heard this phrase once a while back where. Sort of -- Clinton -- small short take on the American. Buying public by not out there buying cars and they said that. Americans by horse power but they drive toward. Anti net because most of the time it's actually a city drive being year usually you. You feel that power off line and that's report. Of course are really doesn't come in until you're doing something like. Brief scene and -- CNET car trying to get speed up on on after a decelerating into the turn you and that that's more of -- technology. And it -- -- -- derivative work anyway. Is like what -- New dad you're get a little technical for -- this. Arena the scheme -- -- the health works. Data what the way -- understand -- disease it's the number that comes into play if -- year. Years and fifteen trying to pass somebody and jump up to seven. That that's where where that course counts. -- yet that's -- twist from from the stock. That -- -- oversimplification and venture will get any corrections from engineers in the audience. The -- that it will that. What seems like -- every other CNET podcast is had a story about patent litigation. -- joins the ranks of those gets the area this week about LG. Wants to ban BMW Audi sales in South Korea. -- and now this is basically kind of stems from. LG and basically. Has led some sort of a conflict with -- leading supplier -- room. Over a patent for LED technology. And because. -- -- supplies believe these two German automakers as Mercedes and BMW for their -- -- time reading lamps and tail lamps. -- sort of things that a year Audi makes a huge deal about they're kind of decorative jewel like -- He had lamps. Because of that. LG is attempting to -- the C. Get a ban on the sale of these auto makers are using the -- from lighting systems. To protect their patents. It's an interesting story here -- think it's kind of it's a little weird that -- you know something like an elite. Could stand. -- all the way into the the automotive world. Brenda doesn't don't the new fundraising -- -- use LEB. -- -- -- -- Probably it -- -- and it Edith and I don't know if if if -- supplies that He needs and that it be that thing -- -- have partnerships with LG. For other things so it's possible that and -- -- LT. I would imagine and -- South Korea Sunday and Sunday in He would be like -- if you -- -- BM WM audience. Fine with us -- It it's interesting -- if -- kind of like how while being a Smartphones and and mobile electronics and others. In 200 you know thousands of patents. In every Smartphone. And if you think about cars now will be there basically ruling technology platforms like all of the technology that in the -- touch screens. -- fuel pressure monitors tire pressure monitors and -- lights. And that's a lot of suppliers yeah all that technology all of decree the patent laws that -- -- play out in the tech field right now. If this sort of like patent law -- and you know figured out in street now and and getting under control we're gonna start seeing more of this stuff so when haven't -- touch screen and and they want abandoned. Board. In country XP carruthers you know -- disks -- Ford model comes standard with touch screen. -- -- the new Tesla model less when that comes out. Yeah that'll have a ton of technology and in some he'll speak up and say no no wait that's. Is an advocate as -- -- -- the Green events called. The sort of like it. Power management -- -- power control module our control -- yet. Yes a lot of stuff like -- though you know. On the article about this. Potentially -- and -- -- getting banned from South Korea. I do like the -- photograph of the MB MW 520 surrounded by India. A -- models. This is a question that think we need to go to in the top models of both genders and it is it. Yes do I don't know if that's a Korean outer shell or if that's in east the president -- looks like. The species. Of a -- to -- out of -- tiger beat and FC -- -- able to put that on wireless will go to the South Korean operation next time I -- when that is sooner at its announcement. And speaking of rules and regulations. How is generally regulations so much there's -- some new rules going out for mobile DTV the digital television now broadcast. I bet you can't get in some cards not too many. I think dead dodge and Chrysler have Q these implementations can think of other auto makers to do at this point to. -- -- any of the Honda earned about way to many bands have that. Yeah. As is mostly in real time of T-Mobile DTV is an aftermarket. Yahoo! and that's. Cute farm between justice the technology is so. Lucy QC right now the nobody really knows what's happening with it is not very widespread in -- -- and the that a north -- even. -- they're even many channels as you can get you do you have. -- -- vehicle that but the ideas yet you can put. -- entertain the kids with received entertainment system TV showing this this mobile digital television signal. Which is free to -- actually can have a premium channels as well. But that the -- what is -- the open mobile video coalition which -- -- broadcasters that are. Getting this technology out there they just issued a new guidelines saying that yet TV or the signal will also have to have -- digital back channel. A and they literally specify that could be Wi-Fi could be. Three G here four G modem it but it has to be some sort of digital talent they can get that feedback from the cartoon media to the broadcast. The idea being that they can now monitor what -- watching. There's a couple of implementations of that technology aside from just monitoring which are watching. It's gonna -- -- -- -- bath sponge Bob square pants all the time -- Anthony. -- in the backseat -- and TV children and her. Or. But basically what the community in addition to just monitoring which you watch in -- -- -- information back. It also provides a means or if there is communication back and forth between the receiver. And India broadcaster they can also open a tiered service if you want. Sort of -- wireless equivalent of cable you can have -- your your basic cable channels and you can pay for premium content it more channels where. To actually you XP you could. -- -- can get premium channels that sort of thing so the that the communication. Making the receiver less of just like a -- receiver -- more of something that can communicate with the broadcaster and opens up. Some interest in technology is there. And I can see why the broadcasters in this coalition are pushing its rural. Look at that stands right now isn't really new way to monetize DT VX over commercials again. And if you can if you can potentially sell something you give somebody -- they can pay you a subscription for. That it makes it more viable. Sparsely from a financial standpoint. And may be that or maybe this'll jumpstart the adoption of mobile the TV I -- -- I actually expand at a. In portable media. Is so cheap so easy to come by. So less structured. As far as I wanna watch when you nobody gets in their car at 5 o'clock. Or -- in -- -- 532. 45. Whenever it like you as a program to start reduced general says. And then the dual stored media which is more likely -- flat and at and -- credit to the bank as. Let's give them -- fun stuff here you found and -- pristine. Rendering. Ranked Hanukkah. So. We thought the super was coming in and in that being the analysts today. And that's Nazi Reston V ten powered super -- response to be. -- V8 Greer ruled for a relatively. Cheap enough for people buy it yet far far more than 200000 right and indeed the opposite route can be -- it turned out to be yet -- -- which is there -- power. -- weeks. Corolla its frontier. It was three in a sprinter -- eleven replacement. We didn't really aren't yet states is like a Japanese. Vehicle. That's not -- -- opera so we still like waiting for the super and while He waits people have been speculating on what it's gonna get. And aid in our -- three artists I Andreas -- At. -- basically take it upon himself to used try to come up with an idea of what the next super gonna look like and this is what we got. This. -- For -- to -- really good looking car. Yet He did a good job -- December I really like this look and there's some interest in design cues here when it's got the so -- -- -- up early. Strong -- fairly strong rear fenders and unit that brawny look but noticed that angle up in the room. That's a really interest in design touch query goes to almost -- point. That's very GT -- -- sun's doing a lot of that where they're just going elsewhere around it looks you geometric thing in the it almost kind of you to GTRs -- and and take off the the deep color -- just -- make it to. That's what you get the very strong and element there. -- the side windows is basically triangle here. This of course is totally unofficial it's just what they're designed to be cool it for twit but it -- for a super if it happens when the -- designers who -- basically. The unit expanding and building desperate need for speed. Have a little -- spare time. So this guy at the that the work for him yet -- he's basically kind of -- -- -- a lot of elements here from the 56 in the -- on -- X concept. I mean this car looks like it would. It would sit on a lot next to -- -- -- And it is exciting to because. Toyota has not had a real sports car in how Long Will since the the Marti spider -- -- -- spider in -- -- -- view account that is sports car. Died -- of their last sports -- I mean in and I mean that lets you consider what to do with Lexus. There's some sporty -- there with my aunts and analysts -- Biases is is is pretty good and there will drive sports or even if it's a -- -- a and it's I mean it it's a good looking car but it it'll never captured imagination like a professional sports cute well. Now is is a new super actually on the horizon that -- -- let this -- -- just played around with it for awhile it. Now five years ago or five years ago they trotted out the the FT -- concept which. Was kind it is there you know maybe if we make a super it'll be a -- with a V6. So we don't really know what -- -- that it does -- and us -- a lot of years here it will mean it seems like somebody it's in his interest in -- are still we wouldn't mediating. You know that the Tory governments agree to 58 XS RS records eat whatever and all that talk and talk about that -- and yet this is the -- -- a super joint venture right. And one and when -- that are gonna come out as there as it out next year I -- and for Saturday technically means late next year we haven't actually seen. A final model I mean it's just it's still just concept -- concept a concept. So we don't really know exactly when it'll be out how much -- -- book cost all we know is that. They're pretty dedicated to news making. -- that there won't be either a Toledo or sign on model and a Subaru model. So and -- think both of those cars will be sold in the US and they and as the French and markets. Wouldn't be surprised they're both Salome Hewitt. -- -- -- And that could either be a all wheel drive and Toyota or -- -- super and it will Subaru if you were gonna be global trend in have been super. But consumers come out and -- -- -- were pre dedicated to. We've got a little draft cards so if you want all -- -- -- -- you died of your next. The BR Zia's B frequency route engineers just going we can make rear wheel -- -- we'll we'll have to rely on that -- schools replicated cards kind of -- his involvement in this is basically you know the angle inlet where more than a one trick pony. We can make -- -- old rear wheel drive car so it'll be it'll be -- right at least for the first couple generations -- -- yeah that'll probably -- -- Another car He discovered. Our bottom line here is. I think. I think this is my car yeah. With the public combustible. Said that the the super -- -- Fayette if a Nissan into combat is -- sketch. A leaked out of a European a Nissan design studio. And it basically is a -- on -- quits and hand B borrowing of technology and design elements from the Nissan GTR things nice you get the duke which. GTR. We old East Europe reeks a more aggressive byte hit the GTR advance -- at -- It's a lot going on on the front -- you. You've got to -- -- headlight fluid and inexorably. -- creates. Thing going on with the -- Dolores litter. At the busy looking for an into the car that doesn't stop there and get to spoiler edit and iris -- going public politics -- it -- -- -- small spoilers that. Will -- each other. That's cool -- -- when -- So did the rumor has it and this -- -- kind of been Lanka and officially. Confirmed by Nissan -- -- -- -- -- building one. In it -- it will be powered by some sort of GTRs. Engine with a three points. -- when a leader -- disaster movie six that outputs like 500 and I see our in the GTR will put out -- -- 480 horsepower at -- war oh. And eyes that you does Hannibal will drive stock but I don't know if they're gonna be able to use that system because they use the CBT. -- to transfer it to there it's sort of on demand all wheel drive system outlook that'll hold up to almost partner course. Are the have a CBT alone is by a weak weak link in yet. Also with that all the addresses to any other -- death might not be released on a panel that it so if they if they borrow the -- -- the -- Asked to -- the TSE -- Thing sort of like all wheel drive system and GTR that means that we dual -- -- also have the dual drive shafts and a with the transmission -- tactic. If the material be stripped out -- -- should be could probably do something like that they're going that far I'm thinking that be a tremendous rally car. And again -- the whole I don't know what I'm thinking about this it would compete in any of the actual the BRC. Competitions because of the fact engine would be -- -- But it could be a tremendous Ralph. -- is proof positive that the again. Somebody at Nissan hasn't seen. I'm not sorry didn't designs. -- building of vehicles is distancing like though. We're talking about the -- -- -- no really yet pretty Nissan caucus and it does not making it. Click the not a good looking partly -- every single of their vehicles we -- they tried to make a minivan in -- with. -- the weirdest looking of the weird looking minivans. And this generation -- -- was it's -- the GTR. Some people think it looks good it doesn't look good it. It looks like tool purposeful like it looks good because it is what it is SA reason through reflected if you look it and -- -- -- fifty idea. Yet that works dance like that 37 easy it's. It's a very purpose of go Kart slips in the wind yet but it's -- doesn't have beautiful flowing lines at its the opposite an Aston Martin -- -- -- Roddy -- yes it's it's basically the form over function is what Nissan is doing with the GTR in the -- easy. Where the whole rest of their lineup holiday -- Does -- mean the morality to be decent looking if TV and -- -- Messed up the front epic revealed those -- Chrome wobbles and in the immediate into. A convertible. Clip and now they're taken the worst parts of the duke in the GT yard Chevenement when vehicle. The duke is I'm and I admitted to goofy looking vehicle this one is interesting though because they do take the front and and -- -- -- -- do penis out like those. Those two round headlights don't pop up as much as they do you in the his there's like seventeen different -- around and now it's hard to pick out any one element it's -- -- big -- -- headlights sitting up on the the couldn't vendor. Yet this is probably a -- that when really the end up in in a real -- -- if if they make it they'll probably make one they'll -- trotted -- some beauties you know them. Seem a special -- -- There's no way easements really serious about. Me and I'll be even a limited right now and I I would think not accident that engine and all that yet they wouldn't really be -- they make -- sell. But it is intriguing when it makes me think is when -- equal to take a normal -- -- Lower it do some other cool stuff to it maybe you know -- by the engine and -- take up the Turbo charger will stronger. And dad do something about that CBT with the old drive. If you. Equal the you'd be better -- and ultimate. That's actually not an applicant ultimately -- it's. Gonna look like but. -- -- tried to build G and Nissan 360 V effect I mean it it easy. Indies -- -- And provide an -- then welcome to -- -- -- the prettiest of the Nissan cars is if you think you're looking Nissan -- you've got to skip over to infinity -- prodigy now yet it's in my opinion the all -- looking -- of the sedan or two. -- good looking. But I don't put it past needs time to market next year. Entity. Wait till the update and it'll get and -- -- grow. At midnight and not. -- is a -- thing that is unrelated to what we're just talking about. It's the yet. Craftsmen. Garage door opener is actually going to make their garage door openers likable. To the Internet so you can open them -- yourself. -- that's why that would be interesting that's kind of the -- or useful insisting. -- use. It's sort of the craziest idea ever. The ideas out with their new because -- -- may have a couple of Niagara they're new why in a garage door openers. You hooked these up into your -- -- to garage door but you also plug them into your router. And they're -- -- and the Internet and then you. You have to register with the craftsman site. And then you also download the app yet surely -- your Smartphone. And you can open your garage -- from anywhere in the war. Which obviously need to -- you. So here -- that's the case scenarios that -- think -- here. Those times you you're not sure if you close the garage door or not. There's times and a packet arrives in -- the -- -- take it inside or if one's kids or guests arrive in nobody's yet home to greet them. -- -- moments there -- since some -- that we it would have to be aware so you'd have to be a little pop up the phone and helical or. Open right and there's some bi directional communication there Indian okay -- and now I'll close it. Let me otherwise elect relying on your neighbor to call you angle like any violent street garage door opener in your browser -- open. And -- when we -- also after the extolling tools. They -- lawnmower man thing yet after the really OCD person who is like housing and lately the gas on to them gas and a leave the rest -- open -- I would I -- -- front door. -- -- -- I mean idea kind of see the hole in them He has. You wanna listen when your house no place home. It could mean I've been locked out of the house portly -- and when I was younger and high school. And my parents -- -- -- in his it was the day the conflict. Led to -- they -- they just get like out of town the daily likes and threw it out where you on the porch. -- -- implement it in house. I mean and it was the very first time well it's time to go out few you know rent my parents for the day. And locked myself -- house and I mean I couldn't call them because of liquidity in -- are gonna come back in the council had to breaking amount house. That's when I -- it is and it would be and if -- this technology been available -- -- would have been able Alden school -- lucked out and just pop. The rise to -- -- for me or if you had that app on your country Minnesota packet of -- that'll open the door. But -- phoned -- in house to. -- If you -- -- nothing yet. -- the I mean this is kind I was -- -- this -- -- instead of having it register opener like the standard button -- you display your phone and use it but actually the one button push front door -- lot simpler. And most the time you're going into your garage or -- in front of their. Them with better -- -- but you know also. That's RRF -- openers. Sometimes susceptible to -- two people who want to capture. That wireless -- -- -- and unless you have one Ehrlich scramble through or you know constantly -- you changing and encrypting code. -- -- The older drugs are openers and He used to be just partners -- house with -- with an antenna. Capture whatever was going now and in replicate and see if they left and right in -- rise going over the Internet. There is none of that read the signals doing a -- year over a cellular connection and the Internet analyst at turnaround time -- that is the almost immediate. It should be ending yet you know after an area for a packet and her parents -- yet to receive pay twenty bucks a year after the first year acted. And this service which is fairly team -- yet. I guess it's when He puts you in your house at. Odds -- the RFI. Yeah it's -- -- well as technologies that we did it because we can't -- It's a good bullet point to have when we knew when someone goes into their local hardware shop in there like I just want the best garage door opener. You disable this which connects to the Internet give it to me -- -- it -- I've seen -- amount interconnected -- people are coming -- -- in late -- -- -- enough power to lift light. You know who garage doors and it's just like complete overkill for their health leaders want the best -- the -- Oh -- but here is the best -- electric cars this is actually a -- take an electric cars. This is a new well I guess -- electric car race it's been going on for a little while. The power racing series and that this is a very DI like -- -- and what these people are doing is they're taking Nat. Power wheels which is a brand and little hikes which is a brand of electric cars for kids hustled by Wal-Mart and target like. And their -- hunting with them. And racing them. -- modifying them a new tires replacing the plastic tires actually rubber tires. They're copying the output of the the motors in the batteries. So it's a whole racing series here. Unit that's interesting. That's. Yet so it look like they're allowed a popular book but to modify the car. So fifteen -- motor tires to those plastic tires. You don't want those yet you're not gonna get an academic and Internet portals in -- in a regular harmony with plastic -- -- -- -- -- the -- and -- -- At that the -- down and hubs in no time is at its end the battery. The -- I won't get any traction anything Dennis is that it really interesting series and is trying to get a sense of where they do this actually come. Where -- these races occurred sound like something -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- What's really unique Detroit to -- sponsored by. Group in Detroit. So yeah they launched -- -- for the 2012 season. Two doesn't -- they actually have season's recent seasons area. And into its policy -- -- in the midwest those people -- have time to competitive. Would go down well in the area that flu like engineers -- -- -- people with like. People of -- when than 100 bulldozer soapbox derby on here it's insane. So what what would be your -- -- power wheels model you -- Al would -- try to recreate my childhood. And I have a kit from moderator. Okay dad has the power real and -- nice so it that would go -- Notes and all our money on our audience -- -- yeah. I. Broom and speakers. And sub in there yeah I don't think they make the one currently -- after that you gave an app on him and for an older model. But -- -- I guess you can add to spend a little money and upgrade them. Motor you know you want high output -- electric motor and and a and obviously the tires wheels we mentioned. I guess in -- you need dooming them frame and a strong those things are others. -- think it's a depends on how how heavy U. And -- remind -- to get a jockey for one and -- with. The higher ringer or -- -- a little video this to you is posted them on YouTube I think -- if you get them running here. -- -- -- -- -- -- Running down -- -- the -- it's it's a real short course -- smokers like a lot of cross. And you've got one guy -- announcement try. Other people around now for -- -- so what once -- have a quad model. They're not doing Leo it's elegant and faster mostly guys are like files the slogan -- -- -- He. The one -- having trouble getting started in as little semi truck power we'll sit there and -- -- on its. Safety first the other -- that really -- and ended up there I mean you go faster and bingo card. It depends on the new card. So all in -- But -- good times and maybe if you're in a city that has -- Paris and bingo and on you might wanna. It yourself they out power wheels are a little spikes and see how you can speeded up. And are -- last. A story here is the car that doesn't really go anywhere. This is the Ford Explorer made out of -- -- -- I -- when it would we know that the -- Basically -- around for a -- land in Florida. But it essentially this was built. In sick and Ford's Chicago assembly plant that was -- of -- 380000. Lego bricks. And it's a full -- re creation of the when He twelve Ford Explorer limited. -- -- actually it and once the media of you can view on our blog the -- explorer being built in surround that here. And -- -- apparently waste 2654. Ounce while. That's Aaliyah gets all magazines pretty much plastic throughout. No cabin -- -- there's apparently and it was this 8760. Pound interior aluminum base. It's built on how okay it says it's -- -- chunk of the week there. And -- so that's the anomaly good element radios inside. And cheating a little bit I think it and they're gonna is -- up. The whole thing up and chain expert to legally and in Florida and October. So I'm just wondering who had Ford had the idea that -- -- build -- Ford Explorer -- late and 51 of the net that actually get. And somebody -- a lot of time must confess patents and other 500 hours -- three and a half month while. Build time. Had no let that I mean lord do if you can't you can't get my head my Ford touch right I -- different guys have been working on my -- -- and proving that. Now we're -- this maybe you. Maybe while those guys were improving my Ford touch -- and other guys had some spare time your typical of those so -- export our. -- interest. It is it is an intriguing vehicle but sexy looks like a ride He and another Ford vehicle. And point and I had to yup Ford F 150 does the big truck -- edition. Isn't that big old at 150 truck. But there. -- -- and travel if it gets up to speed fast if asked and you can probably I think very usage of before fast editing you could say the name. Had catalog -- And dab it on vehicle to you because it's got the extended gap we've got the super -- they -- which. Back bench and that looks like decent leg room -- there. It's got a clam shell blowers sewed up a full crew -- -- you'd have a really bold -- back there but still pretty good room. Yet I'll I would mind -- -- -- identity to look as comfortable as these front seats. Which is you know kind of the point of them a big truck is like you have a lot of space rented a truck SUB. Hybrid thing going on there taking terrified people around -- was -- the bed which -- -- -- Six. Six something. It's -- big old dad -- Good amount of room back there. But the real sort of this car is the -- this truck is the eco boost engine. This is the how they got pretty high tech piece of power plant for a pickup truck. But the whole point is that gets a lot better fuel economy even the -- and produces as much or more power. Right now of the tracks of an evening like turbines. We diesels for quite some time they're -- -- charged. Diesel V aids and their fur like high -- -- commercial applications as you -- two was charged gasoline engines. Quite as often -- -- -- you know bored attempting to downsize their engine. Engines and you know offset some of the V -- with would be equivalent basic. Dad what this'll do for you it's three and 65 horsepower which is good a lot of -- push IV -- will barely do that. And also -- -- -- twenty pound feet of torque. Satisfying. To see Italy but now Ford's standard deck cabin electronics here to -- along with 700 watt Sony audio system. Yeah and it it'll put a bagel -- like right underneath the the -- -- -- there and make itself known with the big inbox -- -- 700 watt. Logo on the side of it it's. Reveal of a pretty good amount of power there it's got -- get a whole thing packets and -- that says you can. Hook up your players. Your phone through Bluetooth -- -- Hard drive based navigation system so -- you can find your work sites. Pretty easily. But it's pretty good it's just a pretty nice -- -- it's a fancy pants track. It is that I mean I guess when you consider that for doesn't make the Lincoln Blackwood anymore. That's 150 -- have to. Do all of those things has to be utilitarian truck but then also. Nice dressed -- -- when you need one. -- 2011. Ford F one to the super to have super -- -- it's four by four yet knows full title. Is even an endless endless variations for -- series -- -- huge whatever you want that trip to -- I mean it is indeed activated stoked so modular. And it's construction that. I -- I was looking at their site when I was working on this review a look at it and the payload capability. And on their site they have a with a -- payload selector. And there's about thirty variations. Now what different payloads you get with each different type -- different configuration of that 150. And the eco -- -- really. I mean it didn't lag in that category at all it had actually -- you could carry the most its payload it was up there with the -- -- for adequate diesel and fifty current and offers these open fifty. -- -- with while with the -- exit the app by leader. Being naked is carried a plane is much slowed as the by of the review which is one of the M when an engine options in that product. Yeah I mean it's. It's I mean it's interesting to fully downsizing of engines that happening. -- -- that we haven't been disappointed by it. Yeah -- what's released in years the is that. You don't get a lot of more you don't -- like -- to more miles per gallon and out of this eco boost engine over the the five liter V8 -- you do get a lot more power right and I understand port has been selling a lot of their new -- on fifties they said death more than 50% have been selling with the C eco boost engine. Yet ticket it's a matter of as -- as opposed to selling in as. This is way more Green. It's like -- you get way more power without penalty yet kind of the the thought process I think behind to the -- that they it's it's -- complex. Mr. toth -- goes -- to an engine there were moving parts. Which adds -- costs. So -- its -- their kind of net -- thing like this is the new worried the V6 engine used to be that well. You can't get to be postal Ford -- V6. The V6 now -- the upgrade. Yeah and yet it costs a little more for the the V6 actually I think was 65750. Dollars more idea this eco boost engine and it. But I can imagine somebody walked in and -- the -- dealership. Wanting to upgrade their truck one Indian and -- pickup truck and looking at that 150 and the dealers saying you can buy this year a significantly IBA -- and -- an organ that is V6 that's got Gordon twenty pound feet -- Port -- kind of like either you -- car inane and in four cylinder engine you see there's usually like a two liter engine. And -- does this and then there's a one point eight Turbo. Does more with blood cell -- -- publishers engines work it's just you cram these lists and thus more air into less space the compression. Worked with benefit. Yet this this truck felt pretty capable. Driving -- around. They had opened the rear obvious and since it was designed for more than more than half ton payload. You could actually out. And that that rear the sprung pretty high. And you could even see that you could look through wheel arches with no payload in there and see the big steel beams make up the frame and all -- added -- that. But it -- it doesn't seem like there's any lag in making this thing. Pool fully capable -- It just said it's. That -- -- -- Edmonton. And but generally in the tires for might have Sunnis today Clinton and network test and marketable -- -- that it. Spray mud everywhere and it would keep eating out of that -- from line. It should be able to you -- though we expect in semi automatic windstar. -- if I were. And -- -- -- right there yeah I did dad. You know this this isn't really high tech. -- drive system in this this track its. It's got the four high end or low settings. And it is electronically switcher board in the dashboard that's that's us. And -- -- -- -- at least drifted up so it looks high tech. They've got that sort of small information displayed in a -- center of the the tech dominance kilometer. And you can pull a lot of information on there I mean it's linked with looks like a lot of -- and you can kind of see that'd -- at the angle of center decent and and you get a lot of information about what's you know engine -- and it looks good enough that I think it in it looks. Yes it but it does fall short of like the Land Rover having I mean mud -- also the style to be mugs or I'm in sandals to the -- this is to let Palestinians disliked the -- saying that -- -- really really the difference between it and and Google lewd acts and situations. Mean low torque yes I need to -- and Portland were I don't need it's it's -- -- -- its attraction that. Yeah its Treo. I didn't get to use via the four wheel -- usually in the struck a little bit -- Omnia but it issue. On this rocky slope. And I just added in two to highs -- just the rear wheels drive in the thing. And dad's front to back up the -- and in the rear wheels to started digging trenches with -- in that in the slope side in and says so. Yes -- the -- -- and and it. I've read and those from wells were able to degrade and -- its course in the engine on top of -- mental -- in southern Lexington wait on its. -- yen and it went right and also so it did it feel pretty cable partly to do a lot with -- it seem like there's a permanent clearance to do. I think every time I try to get out of it for I'll let you. You think there's gonna be like -- -- real mean sidestepped a -- -- pay extra for that but in the justice. You drive it around in the year to climb into it from one. And then you drive around just petty used to being high happy you don't think about it and you open the door and step out with slick low yet little round way to put -- my foot on it was going to be. By stood next to the thing and the the bed next to the -- in the bed came up to you. -- the upper part of my chest and belly I was barely close the -- over in in inside. So yeah that's that's up pretty high there -- Driving it around I got it at seventy miles per gallon -- that was a lot of freeway highway driving Q. So obviously city -- gonna bring it down a bit and that's it's not great but it's not bad for a portrait that -- yet not yet. Com and it drove pretty easily too I think you know that that body -- -- instruction means it's a little. In a lot of suspension travel as you pointed out. But I -- they really need those seats and could literally softly and assist. -- -- -- that it. The thing for me is again it's their cars as the truck and we TV percent and that's how yeah are our particular driving situation. Admit that I would I never -- comparable behind the wheel always built. Like. Like -- around -- little fusion just needs to be very careful you don't accidentally crush. Like a cycle list. But there is a mean is is as much as you try to looking your blinds on the -- -- lot of vehicle behind you and a whole other vehicle in different view and if it's you start overestimating how much space you need for things. If you're not used to driving a truck in at the it unit could -- on the on the safe side there but it's it's yeah I'd personally I never comfortable dramatic -- in this city. Yet the city. Top -- place the news have very high sides and they're very high app and so scene where the lane lines are and and sometimes are fairly narrow lanes to. That necessary action to Africa might still in my -- in my like pushing and many people are -- -- This is I don't know why a -- -- -- is just because you're in a -- truck but it seems like people. Present at. How -- you try to drive that includes a -- My art a month I had to the stance that you know this is the 800 pound gorilla so you'd better get out of my way because I'm bigger than you. You -- that completely -- think they're invincible man pastors. And cyclists -- -- to -- you'd need. You don't know like it is -- have a hard time -- -- lofty degree it's. Edit and if they're less than five feet five -- -- -- under 505 you won't even see them. That's because they'll be below little unreal could have -- -- -- -- -- -- know what happened. Great now retired and are running over pedestrians in the Ford F 150. The -- I'm. Pretty that we hit with. How long to get tickets to turn India. The sports transit connect -- -- -- killed and hook up. Better to read it and it's -- as a utility trucks for a yes that's that's that's. You may not for telling people to -- for doing anything you want. That initiative which -- -- it used to people. El mes ran out of me and maybe didn't zombie apocalypse survival vehicle. Fuel companies get enough left them you right by -- diesel and that. Parallel out of the after the eleven Ford F 150 let's take a look at what He is in the CNET garage. So latest -- latest reviews up by the sort of -- fifty review is up now -- video and He had Nissan Altima review 2011 Nissan -- is set up right now hours yesterday. -- today okay so we've said -- review and that. Next steps actually said in an. 37. And the -- 2012 VW Microsoft's. I get a look at that and also we should next week have a little preview of the Tesla model Assam India takes a look at that hopefully -- get a -- around and you vehicle. And and coming up later on we have the out Porsche Cayman. And the opposite -- that the Nissan Quest that. This -- been as cnet's car -- live I'm Wayne Cunningham -- to -- with Antuan Goodwin now Brian Cooley is on business trip right now -- He should be back next week. You can now look at our show notes and see the show -- a car tech dot cnet.com. Posted on the blog there. And you -- on Twitter to -- we do updates about or do render in the -- were attacked him with cars. Now I am Wayne C underscore S apps on Twitter and -- -- anti UAT and TD -- And Brian is Brian Cooley just one word. Frankly on Twitter so I -- out thanks folks.
