Auto Tech
Electric cars they -- well -- their sales crashed to the Dr. -- now fits in your dad. Kitty chitty bang bang for sale and we'll take you will run -- the when he twelve Ford Focus. Now if I'm a listener but that's about the best -- run -- we've ever had on card and apply it all over the place. All over the place all -- -- car -- live this is episode 213. 28 of April. I'm Brian Cooley with Wayne Cunningham and Antuan -- Mitchell -- the controls let's get right into it -- it is the -- -- we were -- And testing -- sounds and the reason is our lead story is. Electric vehicles actually crashed. Pretty darn well. The volt belief -- -- which -- really should be too much of a surprise. Other -- modern cars so I figured -- have good crash worthiness but I guess I was kind of surprise all that extra -- of the battery didn't. Kind of propel the car into trouble more than a car that didn't. Have that much weight I don't honestly know -- bull weighs more than a similar card it's sidled past we have fewer pounds more. -- -- week looking pretty -- and relentless implements. It's -- roll over anything like that -- where it used to the that's true nice and -- pretty central on those cars that GM -- that T shaped cell that spreads it around the middle and an under the rear seats that were -- -- -- -- talked about putting it that we specifically for our. Partly for crash worthiness. That the battery won't be battery packs will be impacted by crash -- does the -- impacting project back. That battery pack is probably not gonna be touched is when those things get. Arc gone to body -- there's a probably don't want those things to go run away they don't want them to be discharging into the -- structure because its enormous voltage. It's really -- -- therapy with the voltage is on that battery pack but it's not like coming out your outlet and house and that's -- creepy enough. If we everything a look at these some block tools into a link on our on our on our car tech dot cnet.com. Show page you wanna see the actual pictures and the videos from the IN IH yes the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety bottom line is. Electric cars did really -- -- top ratings. In their first ever test that's five star ratings -- top safety pick. Okay that's pretty good yet and it's but it is a lot of people are assuming a electric cars they're -- they're gonna be light and fragile and -- the -- and not the case lot of folks think he's a little -- can -- still a lot of stereotypical. Prejudice against an efficient cars -- in the US different story in -- most of the market but that there tin cans are gonna -- killed -- them. First thing I knew when I mention a smart card anyone -- -- I don't know I would regret one of those. But aside from being accelerated like a football if you get it -- something bigger which -- an -- to do that thing is built like a little tank. You know that safety cell is really tough. And no piece of metal and cars more like thirty inches long it's so small -- -- -- -- -- -- things that are -- -- -- -- -- I feel quite safe in a Smart Car except. The navigated by a truck how many get in a long distance to the moon. In a lot of crumple zones there -- for crumple zones in the smart though exact. Actually because of the engine underneath defeat the whole for an -- -- the crumpled straight -- to worry about the engine and transmission intruding into the -- reported a front end is where I am. -- get an iPod nano and glory and we -- the smart -- like what. Between like the price of the Koreans like using the there's there is like a little and your legs at about four inches -- there's no engine now thinking there was the trunk or something but deny it isn't a gigantic and it. Pulling stuff is a -- -- and they decide to stick to cool workers of America they had may have room. Which are umbrella and it looks like -- about it -- you -- -- harness and use it -- run it'll exactly be -- to be good. You begin at the where you'll you always want to do real life I would derby now he can -- But thought about the appeal of these cards -- JD power market with some new information they did a study is the 2011. Green automotive study a lot of it is about people's attitudes toward willing to buy an efficient -- -- -- a lot different -- to diesel. They looked at clean diesel hybrid electric plug in electric and battery cars -- -- -- they ruled in there. And they estimate is a lot of findings in your but the one at the top line is they say by 26 -- Five years out. The sales share not install base but the sales share at that year. Of hybrid and electric vehicles that would include plug in hybrids -- I'm not mistaken is -- below 10% maybe 10% or. As of the question that I put out is is that good bet. You know -- at some decent number coming off the fact we had zero electrified cars what seven years -- eight years ago. Absolutely and currently hybrids I think early web 2.5 percent or something around there yeah pretty small also accident I think that's a pretty big -- for. Five years it's a big game for a few years -- -- because how many how many times do people buy a new car. That's one every seven or eight years exactly. Yeah so that kind of turn government how many people -- about a new car in the next five years. And I think what happened to be considering an electric Cora hybrid Dextre -- gas prices rise of that -- continues on the thing I have it was looking at is look at how many cars that take at -- sales -- truly make a damn I'm looking appeared to months of for the show how many cars are there in the US. That's about a million and a half cars. Of electrified type being sold per year by 2016 there's a million and a half. The number that is in the US according to a couple things I'm looking at it looks like around 232 -- and forty million on the road. I don't know that includes. Trucks of any decent size. This is some other numbers here though -- -- like Toyota and Ford and a -- -- they actually plan on having about when he 5% of the cars they sell being hybrids. Okay so there's that -- future high mark for example can be has a lot of hybrid and electric. Momentum the biggest -- -- 5% a few years down the road and -- similar numbers there there looking at a pretty big -- percentage of what they sell. -- that's -- might be more like 20/20 when they are -- projecting that it. You have both up port and whenever I really aggressive on getting that is aggressive if these guys are -- 10% or less by 26 UK tour -- 54 million passenger vehicles in the US as of 2007. And if you're only selling a million and a half electric and hybrid cars a year by 2016 yes there's an -- -- -- building right now but. You could see it as being a winner just a -- it's like I can I can play it either way. United he people cheering for -- people saying this is not making enough of a difference fast and on my take on -- things is do not happen that fast in the automotive world. You know when -- announce new card -- -- -- three year for years actually get to production. I mean the amount of time between when we first saw this have -- concept and went and actually -- the road is actually pretty short. Amount of time for a car Ricard development for -- -- that different -- -- radically different now so. I don't need these numbers and -- it may seem slow but to -- is actually. Really fast rate of adoption in data surprises me to the -- that nobody -- -- you feel when you first sought first blood tools like a pretty good. Those -- -- my first once I started thinking about it -- on the fence while his re gonna go to plug those cars. Into one's got this thing called plug share that -- -- you blog about today right right. Now -- areas in -- -- -- touting themselves as the world's largest electric vehicle charging network is actually just an app. And what it is -- regular ambulance and it's an app it's an app for iPhone and very coming soon. And basically what it allows users to do is. To mark public charging stations on a Google map interfaith. Also with they have an outlet at their house Laurie charging station of their health they use that standard. Targeting. -- the -- seventh -- to. You know I haven't been into like charging. I just -- an outlet yet probably isn't one and -- and out and I can list that to write him with that -- And you can -- -- here. You're like old your -- more years your private ploy against the charging station for anybody in the area. -- -- I like that service that lets you put your car and car share yes something like that temporary you know it just in college or how -- -- -- -- you can -- and I -- -- be at work. I'll I'll just -- for -- target in my house during the day pretty cool I mean. But you're not gonna make any money out that right if you're titles it's -- -- -- -- -- money you're losing or item you're not -- I guess you're losing money because. A little more electricity use -- a little bit more electricity use is there any advantage though is that you -- -- use other people's -- to. So it's one of the things where you pay if forward and economy becomes on the launch. The they quote here. It was a cost is he charging electric car cost fifteen cents an hour so they are assuming is -- about the average or on the US I think is about fourteen cents a kilowatt hours so I guess. They're saying most cars charge and about a kilowatt hour. Which. It seems about right so it's not expensive to some income -- top up at your house and all the SP weirdest moments are. What if -- in -- decides that you know what's that your in this network. I'm gonna assume it's okay -- your house every night. Just off to -- parking and driveway and I like YouTube in the garage for me I need to get -- car and there's there is some odd behavioral questions that. -- -- but it's kind of like it's like casual carpool you know it's a collaborative -- horrified if I give you lift today may be when you're driving tomorrow -- to get my Denny's I'm not worried about it. Being paid -- back at some being paid to the -- Or in you don't have to have any need to sign up and share your plug you don't have to syrup plug to use the app in the network okay. If you have Blake you've bought a Nissan leaf and you just want to charge and -- charge it up somewhere. You can download -- start using it even if you don't have. Evening to contribute to the system. And if you want to see any solemnly if you could put your plug on the system and may be some the most about iPad there Friday that it's a great way to get cool cars -- -- drive and you can also would evidently old. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- What was -- with the story couple weeks go about that new mashup of government data on a Google map that showed charging stations that were officials station and there were hardly any -- maps San Francisco and it was like they are like eight. I'm looking at just you know their screen grab here just for the LA area. And I imagine that the true screen grab. It's a lot of charging stations and notice on this if you look at the picture most of those are home outlets and so -- clearly dramatizes at least that's accurate knowledge -- that that is a major leverage point in terms of saying. To a person who's nervous about buying any -- -- we just talked about the last story. -- the 10% number is based on folks thinking and a lot of memory for electric aria I got the range anxiety or plug in -- same -- this might dissuade equipment. The one thing I wanna look at it like when that when -- in his writing my book with its via I guess that's how most people here this. Made is there any way of marking that you're at the station into its active speaker of the mentality that is already there oh yeah good point yeah good point of that would be the big -- there's there's only one -- Usually available most all of them -- -- -- -- strip available. That's electrically difficult with the -- -- -- so yet easy to get a bottleneck ask her out that the note that the Nissan -- and it's -- system. Wherever you go to plug in that leave -- received locations map system and saying that the charging station so it will you can tag right and -- where you don't even do anything really to automatically tags anywhere you charge up as a charging tags. Yeah okay and to be -- of that information was uploaded to this network via. Gonna -- those databases that are. Here's the story about a -- -- -- -- drive. California is among the places that are going to install test some -- pilot program of doing PA's electric road beds. To allow you to drive and generate electricity doesn't go -- your -- directly to generate the trustee for the grid is that right after the municipality. The idea is that -- -- couple companies offering this technology. Looking at it there's these materials -- electric materials. When -- deformed when when they change shape the generate electricity you know the idea is to put these under -- -- like and freeways highways -- and as thousands of cars drive over these things should generate quite a bit of electricity it's a little bit at a time many many many many -- exactly think about that and -- -- -- an -- for example. Yeah yeah right consulate -- on over the area there's a proposal in that you have that California congress to actually do a test pilot. Our test project with section of roadway. Using this technology and it's probably pretty expensive to implement at this point service -- syrup point 623 mile single lane stretch of road. Can generate 44 megawatts in the year. Which this piece says is enough to power 31000 homes. -- that year again I know that's a significant. Oh yeah I mean that's that's free energy real significant yet the thing we've seen this in some other areas where they were. Gas stations because they get lot of traffic given that and now what time they could put in a default mobile. Road as you drive -- a platform you drive into and as it goes down it turns are spins or move something that generates -- this is like wave energy. You put pistons on the ocean. -- -- as -- move back and forth they generate electricity. And when you're mentioning. Shock absorbers. They can do this maddeningly -- oh yeah we really -- that a while back so much shock absorber technology that can actually generate electricity for your car -- as you go over bumps and everything not enough. Run your -- armpit to have a bit there that the trickle it's it's -- old Connecticut trying to capture that energy to waste heat most of the time. I think some -- California we gotta put and put a couple big ones on the San Andreas Fault. Confront -- a couple of quakes and will generate an applicant may not a move often when it does that we're good for a couple years. It generates a lot of the green is energy and it. Let's see it gets good apps now -- carte stuff it was kind of a big day for. For these announcements this indiscriminate and today -- -- -- -- now we've talked about this but -- -- formally available the pandora app that integrates with BMW's new apps option. And we should do this from. Those kind of a lot of those on the Geneva motor show a little while back you -- view cradle or cable -- iPhone. The app goes on the car on the yum on the iPhone and it talks to and as a full iPod out technology -- Two put the pandora system on the dash -- Pandora -- already has a pandora link. App stream coming out of yup that's what Ford uses this -- pioneer users and GB he and everybody -- -- them for pandora integration. They're just taking advantage of that sort of doorway to pandora for into the back of their iPhone and Andrea. -- -- first -- -- -- is the first mobile app that's approved to come up in BMW apps. On dash because it didn't show up graphically before. Now it's a whole different -- it shows. Thumbs up thumbs down as a control and I drive now -- pops up as well as all the -- tag information it's got a pretty looking thing. An -- issues -- technical -- today so in a concealed screens we normally show you but will put a link up to this in the apartheid but there we go there -- some of the pictures you can see what it looks like. And it's very much kind of a rich interface as opposed to being something to sort of line item like the way. You know like FaceBook and Twitter show up on the BMW's system now but they're very lining -- although typically for BMW you have to get the app option in the car yet -- 150 bucks yet. To get that enabled. And dad -- -- Euro -- -- this technology three months ago in the fiesta and I think its its pretty much free in the fiesta is an. In its -- the firmware of artists say target only in the via an and they're saying it's gonna come to the mustang if it down in the book of three who invented the main right now it's only in the via. Ford and BMW d'alene and how fast technology leadership -- control of the world. And this by the way has to go into a march 2011 or later manufacture date vehicles so it's important to look New York. Manufacture date tag on the car than those cars are enabled to have BMW apps either I think retroactively added. Or -- to be ordered that I don't know they can be retro from the deal. As a dealer installed option which I guess it's just firmware and you can also get a cradle to the phone your in your day in -- -- Console and that has to be physically connected at this point no Bluetooth connection -- Tom Toms kind of twisted about what cops -- do their data. They have a that -- post under their that's gonna FAQ support site this week. This is new -- we just caught up on it but. It talks about the way they collect time and travel information. On an anonymous basis. Once you opt -- On -- TomTom device blah blah blah and the interesting paragraph. We are now aware that the police have used traffic information -- you've helped to create. The place speed cameras at dangerous locations -- the average speed is higher than legally allowed. Which could be -- wrote in America. Were aware that a lot of our customers -- not like the idea and we will look at if we should allow this type of usage. Now that's interest. Rate Tom might kill the accounts of police agencies have signed up for their outsourcing thing. -- they've been they've been collecting. The anonymous data part of their -- their IQ routes. Sort of -- software that's been their GPS device for a couple of years very common basically it just keeps it basically the the idea of IQ routes through that you don't need to be connected to the Internet TomTom does maintains a database that news that at 3 o'clock on Monday. The speed on I eighty is about this -- many users that and giving you estimates her how long can take you to get home or with the best -- to get home. Leo what they're saying here is that the police are looking at this information into -- -- speed limits only. You know 65 on I eighty at that point -- -- eighty. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- But they won't know that like Tom -- Warner -- and one good way in. Now miles per hour but Bono -- the hotspots are right in a way they might not have known another way only have other traffic data but. Hope TomTom could just cap that at the speed limit they could say like well we're not gonna show any speeds above the speed limit -- averages about it. You can kind of get a rough idea -- also that there's a high percentage -- at the speed -- if -- you -- -- -- going above a certain proportion are more -- about this what's -- this is only -- in the Netherlands right now as far as the speed -- being put down based on this information. So if you drive in the Netherlands this could be a problem it's not really a problem for the rest of us right. -- -- its interest and now I feel about it is. I mean monopolies signing up they are signing up dust like any other user. I -- in -- a lot of places public -- publicly available on -- major highways they have the road sensors -- which they are to have access to an information picture Oscar but this is yes. Little more granular because. It also. A -- route that also is. -- -- -- -- Actual data from time to -- -- -- -- little -- calibrated. And -- they're not relieve it and they're pretty sparse compared to the number of probes out there like people left on to -- farmer view of Tom -- and there are -- I think most. -- don't the only reason more of like are in the police getting -- information from the other. Traffic a providers like in -- Who also have like a large fleet of sort of you know and embedded devices that are reporting real time traffic and are -- getting it free or by signing up as users but is buying a TomTom or some whether they can get this information in a freeway they can -- or is it a commercial account as a logistically but you can't just look on your -- time in -- -- the average speed relative that debacle behind sockets this doesn't -- -- user interface is there where they'd have to affect. If it cut a deal and be visible to. But -- it is -- like TomTom is surprised they're doing this so I guess they're not surprise that the police have been getting this information with what does seem like weird cat and mouse that you get between the people who supply radar detectors in the people's lottery -- guidance and negotiate a bright -- every couple of years there'd -- elect a new band radar detection in -- -- -- new band of radar -- and -- -- -- -- -- new generation of radar detectors -- -- -- Would be able to you -- did defend against this. It's got slowed down now. But of them needed the same thing where the same technology that. Protects do you. Quote -- quote from the police that hasn't. Right is. You know this is it they can use you know it'd. Addicted to -- Well -- -- -- to do they have a new app. What do they call this horrible names the call of the driver feedback. That's a great. At that and have their marketing people on on the job now as though they were gonna get your app -- it's a state -- -- -- new app. It is -- Newsweek Yakima today and back with the announcement of -- so you put this State Farm Insurance app on your iPhone news what we'll do then is -- -- Like what insurance committee that it'll -- your acceleration you're breaking your cornering news in the devices excel -- a cool. Why well I don't know how many -- -- ticket point seven jeez the gap that's great. When activated the press release says of the entity -- the drivers provided a score analogue a potentially dangerous driving activities -- to get that let's you kinda that's a planet ought to into the game to declare that no 100 index the fastest. The problem as I have State Farm Insurance you don't wanna you know you can do what they can't do it do it this week. If the acted Texas specially risky driving behaviors to -- -- the driver tips for improvement -- yeah yeah -- The contract your trips they can show a map of where the dangerous activities occur it can let you compare your scores -- other drivers that's -- A trip completion notice allows a driver to send a text or email -- some with a can be safely completed their trip and do text anyway. And multi -- average scores can add track progress blah blah blah. In light of all the iPhone and Android tracking stuff going on the last few days this is not the time -- released this stressful it's. As people are getting really cagey about if there's data on my phone who can get it and how and -- I -- awaited about a month to put this is Maine I don't let the free marketing advice from state would charge for that that's free. A look at this screens out of the -- -- these numbers on here have no idea as did bad 85 is that. You have -- yet the F Miley in my scores 85 does that mean I was bad -- good the color is blue I don't know that mean you know as a red or green. -- my acceleration borrowed another one of these it -- -- bars acceleration braking and cornering. But about the new -- to Rochester couple that there's three different limits depending on what you're driving a leaf orally and -- And -- these -- really conservatively to and so if you like -- -- you know quarter throttle frog like. You're gonna slowed Google and out of control he's a young man on the screen. -- so if you wanna go amicable yourself onstage final go ahead and do that some -- safe driving but that -- -- seems a little bit weird to me. -- you we talk about the brands in car stereo systems a lot there are -- Sony's -- new on the stage as the branded in dash thing. We've got the ES -- audio and accurate is that say -- shiner a famous sound mixer in the movie biz -- -- -- recording business for a long time. Here's a guy he got to wonder why it took so long Dr. -- Is gonna develop stereo systems for Chrysler -- on such a huge role with the headphones. So he's going to. It's just hard to believe -- mean. Back in the day when this guy was. Really edgy about an early ninety's you could've imagined Dr. -- and work with Chrysler on a new car's stereo -- -- things. And of course what's gonna happen -- are gonna build up a car stereo head unit not headphones from the car although I guess that recent cross branding -- Why isn't it to -- Cadillac or Lincoln Lincoln Navigator has been Canada. In other rights stealth hip pop current course -- Democrats -- there and they got to get six buttoned up. -- go what and -- Bose audio. Probably thinks so for the price gonna deal there Christ third week I mean can we enabled JB -- -- be Chrysler right. But I don't know what's the big Chrysler -- and Infiniti EX infinity would be a big Chrysler brand new evidence from the which vehicle will 300 as the vehicle I have 300 got a little -- back little -- there hit back. Hundreds back absolutely so he's -- Building. This new technology on the residue of a soldering aren't going to -- Billings -- lab he's gonna get involved in the in the sound shaping in the style of what they should sound like. I don't imagines electrical engineer may be used but it's amazing as a unity that has had a huge appearance -- it'll be -- spot. And now they're going drag Chrysler is going varies of this new guided does their marketing -- forget his name -- zone he's a French guy. Who works for Fiat and he's a complete -- alleviate crosswalk. And he is completely. AG on branding whose company is very smart this is very -- that are very every Sandia. -- during any that a billion he never loses the angry look at the best part I want attributed to the log in screamed at the product. Chrysler of the -- -- -- right there right underneath raised him. It dissolves into the into the main interface Chrysler and -- panel to drive Chrysler 200 didn't really speak -- be great if you -- very few up there you -- -- -- 200 here comes -- rate picture on the on the screen deterrent to the -- right. You know you'll apologized on sorry -- me to put on his -- -- -- OK so it. In light of our state farm app we just talked about here this I -- this is great look at a mall for kids learning to drive safely. I just -- taken part of this contest. I gotten beat up after school. So Toyota and discovery education which whatever that isn't as -- Discovery Channel -- what. Today announced the ten high school student winners of the 2011 Toyota team -- sweepstakes. And unlike the teen driving classes -- Antuan wink hook which -- -- cornering. These kids did the opposite. They want awards because they did an interactive road challenge called heads up which allows and what they're driving skills and test -- the -- -- distracting scenarios like sending a text. Changing -- radio station that's now on the bad list of distracting scenarios and drinking a soda. Like springs and the consequences of their actions through the challenged students learn best practices receive drive in Italy announced. Other gruesome props with there's I would hate to have my name and it. Tomorrow. Union asked what man on to say in Shelby Bennett while Bedford Indiana not a freedom of -- of the prevalence of Apple -- I wonder that -- mentioned sending -- text ads up in the had to deal with the big XE learn how to send text safely while driving. Up. Right attitude and well let's hear it the attic area act did they do well at night they avoided. If they do really well when their text accurate with it right -- -- and we didn't think a like all of these -- indeed this is it that way I did yesterday rockets yeah -- -- Ireland Australia and I. That's. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- definitely new -- required to yet W of those little things -- so anyway. Let's talk about some of the to think -- -- -- this this week we think interest. -- tell us about I radar. -- -- Android is at. Story right -- last year we took a look at. I -- screen. Nothing like that because all of your feedback not only upside down that's and added a scenario where for that was sent with different because the matter. It's just a black box that's -- You can you -- still for the radar detector but it works best when you pair with a free iPhone or injury networks was actually just released last week. It would that in -- app in iPhone app will allow you to do is to displayed abandoned signal strength of whatever like you're being detected with. And it also ties into an online database. Speed camera dozens police traps and also false positive that have been reported. So that you don't have your detector going off all the time because the -- the report but -- door not a cop out. S now markets -- coming to Android now same idea it becomes the remote console for this black box regarding exactly yet though it it -- It was all of the most of the information looks good -- a lot of things on the device as well looks really good. Now this is at its exit comes on the heels of the of the news that came out. Research came out this week that Android will equal -- iPhone for number of apps by July. And has more free apps -- iPhone already in a -- phone now I'm not ruling iPad and there are so the idea the Android -- spaces aren't there right now. And also when you start seeing things in retirement again and effect in that when you start talking about hardware integration with apps. Getting an application talk to hardware is much easier on the Android platform because they don't have all the doors of group like. -- that -- that Upton. Have you you to force manufacturers to use their works -- iPhone. Oh yeah I thought DOS attacks director text which is why. And forward you can stream -- or Bluetooth. And control everything but if you wanna use your iPhone it will first -- -- -- an extra month the Camellia integration and it's only -- Now you can only have a real world -- bright -- at times we're starting to keep things like an Apple license and tax thing. The -- -- wanna play ball right to -- for example the next thing we're talk about -- corporate tag that actually technolust go to. Cool product the -- came out with that actually a little Bluetooth enabled tag team kind of put on your keys are -- if you wanna keep track of yeah. And it basically connects to your injury to Blackberry -- to watch the video versions that thing at the bottom of the key ring there next to the phone is so simple little Blackwell at both the regular key to -- Yet -- if you lose your keys Hewlett you can't remember to put him in your pot in Europe angered some where you elect really mean it even a completely -- Every time you sit him down you just pick your phone in a button you keep the start -- you like this product if -- casualties yeah it was funny but. Wrote this blog post and an analyst for the -- -- Well -- at my apartment couldn't find my -- Highlight stick every pocket sampled everything on my backpack while -- it was in that little point pocket Atlanta -- biology is via -- -- -- tucked up in there made it. It was used in the movie they had some others that had the wings it came out and stuff. -- -- this one has that it's missing some of the effects right this is really just the -- driving car it was -- as the one that they -- -- yet they they put the people only drove around the actually said -- -- -- -- pretty tough they drove it down this there's one that seen in the movie with a drive -- the stairway. And -- just driven cobblestone roads and all that this card is actually a lot more modern and looks although modern -- 1968. Media it's an automatic transmission and a four V6 engine really is that latter frame so you know not exactly -- modern suspension -- while -- for that day and that's -- -- -- -- obviously a lot of old car could -- on the outside. Got aluminum mob -- cover. And actually got this wouldn't carriage where that the people -- that session was bow my chip built a Williams and a -- Yes got a boat tail little a little and not there. You if you look in the isn't that beautiful dashboard all you old school what you valves and stuff on the inside like it's an electric collide -- -- -- the doesn't do anything but it wouldn't move when you hit him and that's beautiful. Hearts of expecting a million to two million for this guy and we always expect a lot these auctions that might go for quite does not cheap. Yet this is an LA area where -- in the heaven now of course if you're spending a million bucks he probably should have any rights that's gonna make fifteen bullets -- the auction price goes for -- she chitty bang bang. The an Easter -- but the trivia about the license plate is that that's supposed to spelling kind of a weird weird way -- He said that the -- coaching genius and -- -- Two so the cars magical. Question eleven. Okay so that Sar -- -- if -- put a post up what a weird note I am not. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Sort of focus the new -- -- focus titanium the top -- We've just about all the bells and whistles and -- and -- take -- on the road. Long story short probably one of the best work on them so far. To be sold on US soil. Dennis is the one where they've got to combine the European and US models. -- this is basically the same about car designed to -- been sold here and Europe as well. We're listening. -- sell of their first direct injection engines. This has -- two liter four cylinder would direct injection. Only -- 160 horsepower which isn't a lot for that type of engine but I think -- pentagon for fuel economy over. Power. Right that it -- me believe were averaging thirty point seven offer. You know anything about the -- Wayne Bryant and I drive. That's impressive -- you also have we have an automatic transmission -- sixteenth in the car. Yeah although it's actually a dual clutch automatic it's -- they've been using their power should they call it. I -- you can tell they've gotta work -- -- and they live view remember we don't -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- surveying. I've been an album has some intelligence built into a -- -- -- like. -- god. It would go about there which got a show softness in the suspension. -- remnants of that he'll get a but yet it's so much interest -- it actually of the manual mode there's a little -- rocker -- on the sides you can that shift manually it's. This works pretty well it's not super sporty but it's not that bad I didn't have the the government -- -- -- -- -- fully -- -- we -- the latest version -- -- it -- -- system -- -- -- -- -- here. And -- touch screen that's actually more responsive -- the past versions of this we've seen and that's that's a good. -- an independent the interface is still similar though still lots of large text. Period Microsoft Zune looking. The -- -- -- in -- little -- looking but they do have a certain degree. Points of interest. The Fort Campbell the ballpark or a large building those that collects and still be on them. We -- one interest in the -- does anyone expect it's got automatic parallel parking. So I'm gonna actually push the -- App and it says stop the kind -- reverse doing that. Now let's see actually actually reversed and it goes to the back up camera here. And I'm just gonna leave my hands up the oui -- And it's actually turning the wheel itself now. -- -- cutting -- pretty -- next to the -- -- next to us but to it's not getting to know which is a good thing. And we're gonna read in the curve. Wheels turning back around about be -- -- And boom we're pretty much part. Pretty close to the curb -- really tight but if there yet that's correcting a little bit so as active park assist finished. That's part. That is pretty good. Ultimately repeater -- where there are really really well is just after we finished doing that we look to the other set victory in there as the couple fitting in and and they're like -- -- -- so focused -- against the high trim car 235. Delivered. -- was unclear on whether that included the rear park sensors the leather in the some of the step of -- the titanium. And of the for a one -- rapid spec and the titanium is pretty well. Set up yet certain which includes all that yeah you take a 700 extra -- Which is pretty good price hike for -- -- -- for people can't park that's a godsend for running over anyone else it's like it's probably unnecessary. But even if there's -- one time that you -- your -- to someone who can't park and they don't -- the bumper covers at that and it's worse than 200 dollars -- you can't pay them for that price. That's pretty good. Navigation on this car was SD card based. -- yet and it actually were better than last night have been complaining about the last couple generations are a couple cars we've been in with the -- nav system via because. They -- either they. -- way off track. And you see yourself. Driving supposedly in the -- in new -- or something like anorexia. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- and actually except I drove it under trees and -- arguments in real challenges and like imports and stuff like that name death stayed pretty close to the road we got off track a little bit. Pretty close to the road if that's great well and I -- -- a sidewalk -- as far as it wouldn't miss an average okay. I -- I I didn't notice any major improvements news that. Disastrous Skype interface it was still slow and buttons are too easy I've found it down more sensitive like more responsive. Then previous versions maybe a little -- I had a little bit of a fight with a diploma -- I noticed that what happened in my experience the movement -- -- took the car out I drove around the with a knife it was in the the and interface with kinda responsive. And -- -- like Arnold and the music so a -- my phone by Bluetooth and that's when everything went wrong and it to stop listening in the instant freezing on the navigation and I wonder if I don't reboot while driving and have to do that. I had I didn't have to do reiterated on its own except that I just like you guys did -- to LA auto are the sole reason you're driving down south in your one of those human -- yeah the last ball. I coming edited due to spontaneous reboots to the to the logos agreement got -- doing this -- head that just once but that's not good I have free and attitude in the -- back. -- -- -- That is an issue different results. That's not that it's buggy -- yeah I just and it's not quite baked yet come on for -- got to. This is this can't be the revised system that they promised us lose significant revise of this my Ford touch. Does -- -- my Ford touch folks we should in my four title our has two screens flanking the -- too little LCDs. And parallel controllers on the wheel for each of those screens this one has a single LCD in the dash. With a single controller on the was on the left. I think so yeah they I think their -- -- -- -- and -- focus that this is -- -- second small -- -- the fiesta doesn't get any of this kind of stuff focused at the single screen in the middle you don't get a computer cars Taurus explore. -- get the three screen the multiple screens minimal yeah so it's it's a nice looking system but -- and -- -- -- is still are some issues with that center screen. -- like driving into all of running. Opposing a great little card I mean it did it's only as we fiddling at the 150 horsepower and 246 foot pounds of torque is not much feels good. I'm feels -- in the and even -- automatic -- words like peppy and sprightly. And -- that I mean it's not diagonally be anybody and and it added re united direct to -- probably don't wanna do it with a dual blistering mission is. -- -- I I I I I thought the dual clutch was I -- like the dual -- we had in the fiesta really didn't for whatever reason this one I like. Okay I like a lot in sport I really like the removal it was better and sport mode that I founded that miss shifted a couple of -- yeah. There is little buggy that day it was just you know I didn't have the right you're having plunked. Shift yet few clocks wants -- -- it would do those things were decided mid -- change and I want the other gear instead because it -- -- We need to refine that. A little bit but I guess there it's in -- again this is the least expensive called line of cars that have a dual clutch I want also to dual clutch in -- price points of the instant folk and other -- sectors of weird like bumbling yet. A look at the -- -- that I would never use that it -- infects an awkward position in. When you -- the whole widget I would never -- it but it was a natural they're actively use it now in our discussion we've been having about what direction -- down shift V viewer calls -- down shift. Down or up to it went on an annotated with it whenever -- -- -- -- -- -- this -- it. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Yeah but that was already know -- nice nice -- is a this is a car that I would absolutely recommend. To someone especially if they didn't go Wii is the my Ford sync yet out of the whole time -- -- driving -- -- they acted alone this car. -- -- -- -- -- All of the cabin tech and just use my iPhone girl at the it is -- the dot matrix display at its base or whatever they come with without that big center LCD and that and that nonsense I think I. Amber to get a bargain and don't really -- problem doing that but -- which -- well. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Anyway nice car -- got a winner here in G Germany speaking as a car as a tech beast it's also good but. As a few bugs in it but the stereo. Unlike the fiesta -- you can get a manual gearbox so you gotta like that dual clutch or you gotta go look at something and there will be that's been asked -- in next -- so what -- we hear about the power plant that anything that's if that ain't gonna take two leaders medical now -- duplicates of the Turbo it to platoon leader and it -- and fix EU. A yeah lol yes yeah and if you think -- and it fit the theme engine that and that the courts and the -- eagle -- The Internet fuel efficient that you'll listen to leader yet with twenty more horsepower pulling more horsepower of the smaller car powers that be a -- now and -- bad and they manual transmission via Fon and inequality ST. The immediate okay so we're gonna really imagine that it is -- it as -- like. It wider net and have that classic Florida RS rally look British report card looks like it about it. -- -- -- have some good look forward to their. Taurus -- boost the new revised Honda Civic hybrid mildly -- they added one MPG to the highway number. Hyundai Accent Kia Rio Mazda three with the sky active engine technology the new Nissan Versa -- that are all lot of those creases and the new. -- boring that this Subaru Impreza. And forty miles per gallon is about average for that these cars again and before you on that theory it -- needed -- there -- a lot lighter. And old had to do because it really promising spot in 25% more efficient and it was an appointment to and a half to -- two -- -- -- -- It and again on her thinking of the automotive industry yeah minority at the fuel economy. Numbers but -- -- only got 36 putting them at the bottom of our list you know Apple they're also the only all wheel drive car on a threat and you can drag them by current generation -- TI -- January. Did to their framers of the regular present here -- torpedoed the WRX -- But the high number on our list is that civic hybrid at 44. The low numbers the Impreza all the rest my points as their -- pushing forty. Nice and -- the Khatami buying. Internal combustion -- -- folks. Listed a quick look on our way out here. Of very importance of -- behind the scenes video we wanted to show you here because -- a lot of you are waiting for a fast five to be coming up. Colleagues did interviewing the screenwriter behind fast five really insightful interview -- -- assuming a take a look at this. One of Hollywood's brightest creative talents that screenwriter behind this summer's blockbuster the new fast the furious movie fast five Chris Morgan thanks. -- -- Are just getting bigger and there we need to write the installment where there's certain elements you wanted to include. Call us and. -- and the -- right there that's. That's that's the equipment onion if you need to really bad about buying the ticket yeah and I'm gonna see that the Mars but it got advance tickets that -- -- in -- those who we've come and public item and all the rest of them. The first one and -- it. While I think I'd rather take part in the us in the it took notice they've driving content editor that I hear a lot better than well I hear that from the screenwriter yeah. Though the cars go fast and they go to an alcoholic -- kind of smart. A couple I think he's actually a little too sophisticated to rip -- can play place to stand -- I think. I so that's up of the kind of put a link and -- -- -- video the union and the best part wait till the very end of the video. The male anchors outline is outlook. -- slick.
