Let's talk about the new questions 300 we've got a we saw this new -- restyled one at the Detroit show guys but -- now has a hybrid version coming that right. There's -- many details on what that hybrid and tales though. It's a facelift sentence we will offer a hybrid variant of 300 -- group -- eight speed automatic and when he thirteen said CEO. -- as you mark you -- the -- of -- and that's -- only -- there -- some hybrid technology bouncing around in Chrysler it was part of that whole. -- -- Come partners that they did with that Daimler and BMW in the developed that dead dual clutch hybrid system it's a holdover from the old Democrats as -- they may have that upland and they may use something that's -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Million Fiat to you know -- might have something to you. Yet they. Amateur fiasco everything hybrid we've seen on the market but clearly this is something that Chrysler is lacking what do they have for hybrid they had -- take up. Postal do -- -- again that was about briefly net interest cleanup they did announce recently -- they just announced yesterday that -- Chrysler and the EPA are -- -- money hydraulic hybrid system for any commercial vehicle while actually cornea a smaller vehicle -- -- -- That went into a town and country but -- -- totally different kind of hybrid system hydraulic. Hydraulic hybrid uses -- the pressurized fluid -- hydraulic speculators uses an UPS. Name that when you step on the -- it Exley activate the -- -- I don't you look -- it -- Yet and yet the tank basically 5000. It'll be -- fourteen point four gallon. I hydraulic tank plus you also have a gas engine on this car via -- -- gas tank to. I don't wanna get themselves is is a lot of tanks a lot of space in the mechanism. That you just how do you agree with the that's also a -- I just under Aspen might have been their last hybrid that came and went without really going on the market members. Yeah yeah that was that weird Garnet was for sale technically but never like -- shipped and they only put up like a few -- yet that was the -- -- system and account data we got to drive that briefly Madigan got a review of it because I can't that's right and everybody went on sale right so lets one card. It we will never get user feedback on because nobody was able to bottle and it has had sold very -- -- -- so anyway Chrysler fronted tiptoe back in the hybrids in the new 300. Is gonna be the way they start to get they're good looking car -- -- our coverage -- a go over to cars dot CNET and check out Tara. -- blog post on a car from Detroit we're gonna video and up on CNET TV nice nice refresh and overdo it really hadn't changed. Really since became -- 2005. Speaking of alternative power trains is going to completely different direction but if you -- electric car doubt -- you will love the BBC and you'll hate Tesla. Here's what happened BBC correspondent. -- it was time -- -- -- punctured the whole bubble around electric car -- -- took out a -- EU which is still in development not on the market. And made the journey from London to Edinburgh Scotland. And took -- for -- days. That's a long time that it alone time average speed including charge time six minus six -- for or whoops. This is not good PR -- cars and in in Britain -- So this is you know they've made quite a big deal -- this it was quite you know the county images feeds into the flood of the average you know non techie car owners anonymously these corporate -- -- silly deported to -- camera. Well Tesla took umbrage at that as you can imagine and they have big operations in England as well so they said we can do that move quicker. So they sent one of their guys -- -- Paella -- I don't yes he works for Tesla I believe keys that just he's described as an all electric car enthusiast okay. I think tussle actually loaned him the car for the -- okay and he took it from that I love this from the Tesla store in London at the history. Let's the war in London and -- -- -- -- Denver he took us pretty straight route it 400 miles that one day. He did charge up occasionally along the way -- his route right straight down -- middle of the island there and said so there. But the question is can you to compare a 100000 dollar Tesla Roadster with its advanced technology capacity to what a typical electric cars going to do -- by the way the guy who was in the mini. Only to take him. Four days at six miles per hour average speed including charging but he was -- cope well because he wouldn't use the heater because that would -- -- -- even longer. Lessening the car's range so here's the question who is kind of and of the beauties of both extremes but that was kind of philosophically right here our -- -- the electric car absurdly impractical. But I -- long distance travel or. I think India take the question of public while would you wanna take 400 mile trip in a car that -- hundred calories to between it and accelerate harsh. Optimal Lori optimal though not only without the seed eaters turn it like every. Manufacturer of these electric vehicle says the city cars use either that -- cars at this point the technology still new. -- on the driving this -- of state or across the country. But getting to and from work if you go less than a hundred miles east avenue -- -- for a date. An enemy and for the average person isn't just for a day -- tell you exactly that expected to do something other than what it was designed to do with the point is that in a bit much of the technology in the little here. Air I think I I think this was kind of an unfair slam piece by dvds. And easy target to -- gimme -- take. When -- write a -- to the moon was not meant for that mainly acted in many entities to the return in about how fast -- But it's not designed for and how it ends up but lots has -- combos look at corners of the but that mini. To -- drive around the middle London -- but -- don't even congestion charges for electric vehicles these kind of cars avoid that and also you're just. Because you're you're driving pretty slow anyway -- -- -- stops electric cars -- of that yet that's using the right tool for the job that's all that is. This is yet to regenerate -- -- -- this is kind of -- silly. -- -- -- -- -- -- O'Brien reports. But stature testaments it's in a tussle was crowing over their their side of the -- like -- made it -- a day near what I'll review a -- an estimated 84 fewer miles. Minnesota the bottom -- -- -- at least that's what people know how to plan a -- that or they're guided. It's like as -- got to shove it up both BBC's and minis are assault the same time -- I'm -- they they love that. Our friend -- -- part of that one bright yes but -- knocked -- the in various rumors opposite the from Europe -- PR stunt -- okay. Let's talk about connecting cards as though this is a serious story that will impact -- -- -- public to research this week about of the we all in this room we all know -- -- -- -- you watch -- show but. This is gonna start to trickle down of the average person this year and to Wall Street and everyone else who -- Two days -- research won't give up from Gartner research and they say that by 2016. Half of all mass market cars not just time in cars -- exotics will have. Apps through their head unit as they call -- the car radio -- -- their head unit. -- -- sixteen that's pretty impressive. And in just two years more than half of premium vehicles will have app support -- their agent that's that's real momentum pretty quickly. And another piece of research from IMS research says that by 2017. They'll be an annual sales rate globally of thirteen million cars a year. That have a connected platform we're talking sync and soon. Against that probably includes the blue links in the on stars instantly includes yeah the rule that it rates in the ruling in. To get that number anywhere you have to -- list of the those are gonna dumb connected platforms compared to -- in -- but still don't know blue Lincoln. It's a little smarter than where -- -- credit for I mean it -- have things like they -- connectivity and -- that's true awareness week and tweet your car's location to your friends that pretty smart. -- and an -- even if moving towards. Using more digital data giving giving and Ericsson though they're getting there by the time they get to -- that the point that there. Projecting. -- should be there and the. Nobody is that by next by Berlin this year on start you have a real mobile app platform in the Balkans excellent there's different ways that people are going he's gonna. About this though it's fascinating now. -- is -- put maps on the phone will connect that through the -- head unit to and that some of the people doing that -- and apps -- really services that will sit on our server. Yet very different and -- control which apps you get will will will give you your apps and BMW -- -- you're gonna go this way that -- have a lot of specific but I needed talk at -- and talked about wirelessly can be built into the car or tethered to the Smartphones and they're gonna offer choice but you saw -- Android head units. To -- yes yet. It seems like the -- dislike Alex the cheap way to build play tablet that now the cheap way to build. Yeah I head unit you just get the Treo it than the -- anyway and OS -- pretty little follow you. Not -- so lots of research came out this year though this week said the connected car thing it has a really hockey stick like -- ramp in the next few years. And -- no surprise to us. But now comes the challenge now we're gonna see the rush to. Connecting cards like we've seen and documented the -- -- hybrids in the last three to five years that we were we really started covering cars about the time that hybrids kicked him. And we've seen that whole thing come to up plateau of sorts. Now Rego oversee another. Another gold rush which will be the connected car. Let's see what's going -- with -- this idea of this is either. Disturbing or it's just kind you know geeks -- -- off this is the idea of hand hacker. -- being someone who's got -- wireless gear out in the real world get into your car. Easily. Without exceptionally expensive gear because it has a wireless key technology -- this is RFID -- And it when you've been watching a lot of these kind of things happen in this latest story coming out of Zurich. There's that they were able to get into ten models from eight cars using pretty inexpensive equipment to do what intercept. The kind of the occasion well what happened in these sort of like proximity keys where you get close to the car you just touch the handle in the -- oh -- and then -- when you -- in the -- he touched the button. The that the -- using RFID technology usually. To -- like sort. Review kind of put a little bubble around the vehicle -- if that bright in the key comes in that global news that. If and the start turning up on the all you have to do is. Be able to spoof the signal from. That key fob and anything can -- the card in the know that the key to snooze that's the thing with -- -- so. If you can figure out some sort of way of tricking the key -- and sending -- signal yeah. Recording that signal and then re broadcasting using laptop or smart phone or. Any other sort of like you pretty easily. Easily sound technology you can trick the card into. Thinking that you have the key in that you can travel. The key here if you will. As I understand is that you have to be around that one point two at least two of the communication between key in car intercepted copy basically I've been doing this and transmitted again later actually that that's not entirely true you don't have to be at the transaction point. You have to -- be near the key and get that signal it's sending now you have to be near the car and get the signal it's sending now and -- but not the same time. What one way to -- it is at the same time because then you can. Intercepted the key signal and send it to the car -- here in ten over there and you know the key could be ten miles away from the color. If you can transfer -- fire. Right if you go on suits but this is a matter of picking a -- idle musings or encrypt it will mean my garage doors secret that. Well in rigorous or -- -- -- encryption doesn't matter because you're key is sending out the signal via handsomely stands next year with an antenna that grabs that signal and sends it to their own. The transmitter -- your car. That would fundamentally means an encrypted communications of all kinds -- -- that you consider on some guy from the NSA and just pick up what's coming off his -- cellphone and just say. You copy some string there I could also access his network -- this and into encryption requires that the devices understand. The language. Of the encryption not just like a dog hears you laugh and can you -- parent -- you're laughing community you but it's not the same doesn't get you -- I didn't think what you don't need to add deep the thing is with the system if you don't actually need to decrypt the signal you're sending encrypted signal to -- straight to the car. The -- the thing -- that's what took a copy paste where you're never cracking the encryption. -- is -- an encrypted string and re playing it and make in the car think that the key is nearby writes -- a little part even that smart. This is this is about cracking encryption that's why -- so easy and cheap. The death of some of the earlier systems aren't even smart enough to use encryption I mean there was a big issue movie earlier and -- a couple years and even last year -- you know the the -- -- cars -- -- you -- put in orbit to the carpool lane. People walking around parking lot with one. To scanning. And then getting the code in there and finding some sort of a way to send that signal oil and then just driving through the carpool lane with a -- And get a free trip through across the bridge with them ideal for -- account. They've been doing the same thing also what those kind of near field a credit card. -- -- -- Spoof that finally get free gas at a gas station and you know -- -- -- like. A situation where there's not gonna be a -- than their -- that your pulling a card output in the right there -- you know you you can do the third thing if I mean. Wireless technology is kind of inherently. A little bit insert your own little -- Yeah. I mean this is immigrant story is that -- mentioned here in in millions pieces there was a universities of Inca of South Carolina -- thing how. Tire pressure monitoring systems could be hacked as a portal into the -- as well and the early story we haven't a year ago was one you know those requiring have a laptop. You get into the car but also put a dongle on the cars of BD port but all of this seems to be getting easier simpler -- -- cheaper and more or less intrusive -- all the time. By the -- get what -- watch for the get out of your car -- lock it up. And if -- wanted a -- that somebody getting your car and somebody following you -- some -- that tensions do you know what looks like a coat hanger antenna yes -- out of his pocket start running from them of course when you park. Beyond the was walking by your car with a -- on it's like okay you're rider you know you're there you trying to get a role in in a magic show. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- So wanna go through at a royal couple in depth and -- them giving -- -- six dollars that the Golden Gate Bridge under this sub -- Just -- twice about driving -- it's like I forgot that DMV was in my briefcase. I'm into that I paid twelve dollars to draw the Golden Gate Bridge give it an -- -- the -- -- -- that's that's impressive but expensive. Artist thought about this -- awful about what's may in the USA and what's not we that it has talked about this -- on the road the story's been going around for awhile. Does the American automobile labeling act this is the one that has this what what the sticker of the new -- sticker and also some of the permanent decals and -- like door -- Say where the cars made where the components -- -- kind of breaks it down by percent. It'll say yo 15% components and transmission in this country and engine in this country yet final assembly and where the right that's another one. And does so there was a big stink over -- -- made USA foundation which I guess is kind of an activist group or something. And they said this is last Friday that GM is trying to hide the fact that even other government bailed out company which really put -- -- -- here. It is moving its production of vehicles offshore the cat like yes our -- made Mexico Buick regal made in Germany which we think -- good. And in GM comes back and citizenry the just bizarre they -- GM has made three billion dollars in US investments is coming back from bankruptcies of respect a lot of money in America -- we move cars offshore in some cases are not. Shouldn't be an issue -- the big issue with that with he had made -- usaid the act you know management is complain about is that. When they put cars on display -- shows they're not putting these stickers in the windows the Monroe Venezia in the -- to tell you this information. And you know frankly I don't recall seeing a lot of minorities and in car windows at our shows now and never -- so well below what they've been taken out they just have never been. And the global overblown -- see this group wants them to suddenly start labeling them that way right -- -- show notes. Which there's actually surprisingly little -- -- if that didn't look as good -- it's just well there. But they're good they're gonna put data -- show ending on the floor it's all models of lights and thumping music but with the public shows of the ones we go to -- -- also responds that that the major shows. And Chicago Detroit Los Angeles New York. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bring in an ass -- they probably -- have -- yet these are the sticker on the remote taken up to the death people honestly as I wanna -- -- it's elegant shopping anyway that if -- heard about that that's that's what it's all about it just sounds like. Of the -- -- to be -- Let's see who want to who has an X three is pretty obsessive about -- car. And there really people love directories for various reasons some blog because there's little city cars -- like the -- of the -- TVs and others. Like him because there you know the three series that's an SUV and anyway if you really are that obsessive about your -- theory. BMW now has its not a live cam I don't think following the production line. But it is the ability for you to get a factory made video loop collection are -- collection. As your expert is being made -- in South Carolina. That would for me to tears that you know what that they all look like when they're coming off the line right I really wanted to -- to their Spartanburg plant -- of the plant the -- cool. But I didn't -- it at a given seeing my X three verses annexed the reading it that's the part -- I didn't even know it is your browser plug it tag it. They may not be hearing you guys like -- generic video one of every color code for every coming up. Here's your Montego blue pill that's right coming up the line it's almost done -- -- and five other people have that same tape. So they'll do is they'll love its seven cameras -- the assembly line it'll take pictures of your X three and it comes down all the looking at this picture here on our blog post is as green thing on the nose of the car. Insurance system -- like an assembly. -- thing but I wanna protect. Aren't quite the thing that identifies this as -- commodities to be shot out of it at the maybe it's the -- look like you punch in your bin. And a bank has your own little point and yet so maybe it's one -- -- -- -- quality control the head can simply -- Newton. OL actually yeah -- be cool uses but its response male. -- that would be smart that would be smart and so you can see one of these seven different camera angles that tracks your ex threes being made. And and they can you know you can go in there and download the clips and -- them with your friends -- -- love that. Hey here's a clip on my door is being put on my -- three -- three has now been updated for about five or ten years or something finally we have a new apnea at the 2011 model yeah that real update so it's about time so maybe it is the many and excited about you and excellent utility your your party is -- back the -- that this actually. But that's to be fun because you know. The public on epic car park but it back together that doesn't need work -- the factory workers picking their -- drives do exactly what goes on down there that's not likely you'll have registered in the -- -- here are the reason. I'm kind of attack that what they're all I thought I -- doing it for reasons I realize no I -- -- offenders off instead -- that part. That's the part that's the no reason you really don't wanna do but the whole other story I've been born on Saturday. It -- -- -- Ecuador's offer fun there's no way. I've -- it just think -- off. -- the public what happens if you need to take the doors open -- an emergency. It helps to know hundreds. You you're crazy and I would you want it that you're tired and hot so hot Saturday or write a lot of good tools car on the three new case of beer -- -- Georgia right or indoors welded set. Yeah yeah that's right or to -- -- -- sign of that thing awaits. And side so Toyota is just. They're nervous about the Chinese they are really nervous about it to the Chinese in their country they have got a lot of great mineral deposits many excellent tapped. And these rare earth minerals which are used currently. In the components that make for very efficient electric motors. I was nervous that they are not going to be able to count on a Chinese supplier these minerals -- running 90% to know that 90% of the global market for the rare earth minerals -- into. Current electric motors this is kinda like is it. Is it Bolivia Colombia -- than lithium. It's about the lithium Bolivia. Bolivia Connecticut -- -- lithium China's government to pursue these other -- two countries and ended up sitting on the these to -- -- -- -- current automotive. Raw materials. So Toyota's got a new design for electric motor that says -- China appears in case you wanna cut us off. It's a new continent and inducted motor I don't know enough about motors to know how that differs from whatever they do today. You know I know I know it's so this is -- -- magnet type -- to -- wound motors what we have today but adaptive motor. Would be like -- electric toothbrush there's no metal to metal contact -- it charges through a un air gap like a home. -- -- palm mom there are charging man. Just like the left inducted charging yeah my window alien -- that there's no metal to metal contact -- but I think. The way that this works is that there's. Electro magnet -- outside -- -- video and done by sending current the electro magnet. The thing whenever the -- work it's like in life but they would have to be -- I mean I think we don't use magnets are they have some way using different types of -- maybe -- -- all experimented with that of both good and it permit -- -- and it. Now we're really that's it we're -- wellspring of informing and so that we are not weird that -- guys Wikipedia I think that they're okay I think the rare earth minerals are part of the permanent magnet enix and games are electrodes are pure electro -- -- daring her to keep our department and then things become positive thing. That's our best -- Jessica that you debate going tested met with about -- story before this gets really -- okay -- speaking of electric cars -- The story came out in the LA times about few days ago and is a survey study was done by Purdue. It says okay the carmakers are counting -- California to be the first big hit for electric cars that's really culturally more than anything else. The Prius was far away and still it's far away the biggest home run -- here in California. But because the way that electricity is charged for -- -- -- big state lot of people lot of market. It could be one of the worst places. To have an electric car California households this produced but he says. Pay a steeper electricity rate compared to others it's about 35% above national average. I think they found that we -- repeat fourteen point four cents per kilowatt hour in California. Verses some other places that pay as little as five or six cents. Per kilowatt hour and let's see they say here in this studies that Tuesday. Oil prices would have to rise from the current 100 dollars a barrel now to between 170 and 250 dollars a barrel -- the long way that's been there. It's been Atlanta but the 250 past it's been a the most high one hundreds I think but to the yet to get to that range to make the volt as economical. As a Toyota Prius. Even after factoring in thousands of dollars in government incentives. Again department the fact doubled as a plugin so it does take a lot of Jews in typical use off the grid that's. That's stark. Yet this is kind of explaining why a -- if you electrical engineer for some of the California utilities and they're all for electric cars they want us to be charged in a car -- -- if you -- it -- yes yes. Well that brings us to our first email which is kind of where I -- -- -- got off is -- this comes in from mark procedure recent video about the Ford Focus electric. Was good except you -- the price of kilowatt hours of the rate of kilowatt hours but it -- -- not quite correct. And apparently he's. He knows about this stuff I don't know he works are on utilities or what didn't quite say but he says. At least for the genie utility in northern California and I think the -- -- -- -- You are required. To use and what's called. Owners can choose to add a meter for the car or just using existing household rate -- -- -- but most importantly he says it's which is the whole house. -- we checked out the rate plan he's got there and yet there's this special rate plan and I've looked around a bit this week a lot of utilities have this so wherever -- listing does that you're in one of the -- of one of the coastal states looking at buying electric car. A couple. A utilities that I sample up and on the West Coast at least LA and San Diego they have the special rate plans that would teach you really favorable rates over night. Really -- just a few cents a kilowatt hour. A lot of the utility companies across the country and at least the more. Sophisticated ones have authority cheaper plan -- the don't have that. But this is like an optional one you can also get into. You can I give -- the thing is you can -- -- -- as he says you have. Have to use this in California but especially for people that are using electric cars and the big reason why they went and -- as -- -- -- is not just the load is low at night. But they. It's very difficult for them to shut down and start up. That there PowerPoint yup and you know they they keep them running -- -- can keep -- running to the steady pace that it's much cheaper for them no interest and that's a load balancing thing -- they have you know sit someone -- during the night time as during the daytime yeah then it's really better for the -- all around interest and there's that chart here it's -- hard to read -- watching -- video version -- let me just tell -- -- shows that on this -- five cents off -- Ten cents partial -- from 78 at two. PM you're paying 28 cents. A kilowatt hour it's a huge -- double that high averaged at Purdue was complaining about. So if you take the -- number's in double yet again. Oil would have to go to 500 dollars a barrel in their calculation before -- volt is as economically -- feasible as of a current hybrid pre little a lot of these electric car manufacturers have fall. Where built in their car -- into the Apple into the charger that let you -- Don't charge until. Yeah like -- and even -- -- -- 2 o'clock in the morning -- don't charge until then because I don't wanna pay. That much money to kill yet but it's real it's all of them or has their out neat and there. There if -- that's interesting because it actually no leisure rates in your area -- -- Microsoft kind of -- yeah and. Thank that was those that we hadn't seen before that that Apple actually -- -- do you live in the use a database of out of tiered rates I think the lesson here that -- if you have an electric car. When you wanna turn it -- drive to work target there were -- -- -- Go to the -- use -- charger to avoid places -- still -- Then they'll -- the hype right now so we have charging good all users when they start charging for it then you idiot it's right to illuminate -- salute. Absolutely is -- to get a better rate -- that it five cents a kilowatt hours -- And -- good at math on this you know we. It's not hard to find out the capacity to battery like the focus or a -- -- -- saying the Prius plug in her 2324 kilowatt hour batteries. So if you see that it's five cents a kilowatt hour at lowest rate and it's a 23 kilowatt battery. And if you're dead flat at five times 23 was at a -- a half not even a dollar and changed -- fully charge up. That battery at the best -- animals like 128 cents and see a big difference in in the cost. Okay let's talk here about -- on the eighty charging thing we've got one in here. Question comes in. Uses the same ports. That's very good question right. The -- -- the departments -- the female and was actually -- concerned. That. In you'd have to buy a different charger you decide to switch from and -- to work group within five years or whatever on -- evaluated -- -- find the regular -- -- -- Well a couple of itself on Samsung rumors is Nokia -- -- stable actually switched over to micro USB and the standard pretty much across the industry that Apple. But. But as far as like electric cars go. They all use a standard the FA EIG one than than that in two standard. And it says you know experts -- -- -- evil and the 120 volt as. Of the sort of connected to be built in -- communication between the charger in the car. -- -- -- right here this is that that handle and the receptacle on the car and it's got I think five pins in it that they -- actually vehicle one. -- through -- three big ones small ones epic. -- I think -- computers super power transmission and -- for communication. Units this thing leads to those cool things are gonna lighting effects around the because that's why that's the -- if it knows what you know what what it's charging -- yeah. Affiliate here -- what they -- -- vehicle Chrysler Ford Toyota Honda Nissan Tesla. They're all behind the stand is pretty much the big -- everyone who's pretty much announced -- electric cars that point monster if you're gonna have the same connection as well. It's gonna be accepted it's definitely industry -- the the -- interesting because you've seen our review it's actually -- to port under its little charging cap one of the the JU 117 -- -- standard the other is their proprietary. Pile high input. Lots are already yet double except with a thirty minute -- and that -- and it even TUZ. Yet don't use that connection you can still find that they want seventeenth -- two. Yeah that's the case and it looks like the standard so it looks as though we got to a standard pretty quickly get SA he did this it was human society of automotive engineers yet as opposed to -- -- trying to lead the others. SE still -- a lot of sway in the but it's not like. The other industries we -- here where there's no one does no parental guidance. -- -- really is a very fairly unified organization in the -- and it is in everyone's best interest oh yeah exit to do it needed that it be the equivalent of the -- he gasoline car with the two small silica. Right you would be able to fill it up anywhere -- -- an engagement and knowledge gonna make their -- gonna succeed based on having a different charger for the most part and it's not as a competitive advantage yet the idea is to make it does go away. I don't know what I hear about the compressed natural gas Kart -- -- right -- -- -- about -- a few a few shows ago -- -- in the -- Is buying civic G axes which of the compressed national natural gas specifically talked about this at our CES show edition. And we get this one here from -- the CNG Ford Ranger driver in Utah says we are people -- -- tar. Have a monopoly pricing situation with a company called -- star. Which is a natural gas company. And -- they on the natural gas fields the pipes pumps and everything. They are therefore under public service commission controls so the prices don't float around much he says are paying a dollar 27. A gas a gallon equivalents. For natural gas users in Oklahoma its only 75 cents the gas chemical which is an equivalent amount of natural gas for the same energy as a gallon of gasoline. If it's -- its -- differently pressurized liquid. Liquid gaseous fuel. -- -- what's not to like well. The few things not to like first of all gas and compressed natural gas cars have because as a lower energy. Yield -- at the right term for. That fuel energy density the slow. The closer to 6013 seconds and a DX I know what standard -- -- 13. Faster. What -- -- what's the what's the civics -- its second car. 687 point silently then -- the equivalent attend those little slow post to a thirteen seconds that's where you're -- natural gas so obviously it's not gonna be for every car in every driver. You want to snap I -- -- -- and natural gas is really intriguing because it is fairly clean burning but. There is -- -- that yet we produce it in the US. I didn't people have lot of demand if it gets a lot of demand on the output. Will prices rock and a because that -- how much do we actually have -- can we supply a fleet of now from millions of -- yeah hundreds of millions of cars via what's even half of those -- natural gas a hundred million cars. I think at the I think -- days and its thing and it's and then again it saved the finite. Source -- have an argument natural gas of -- and redeeming about that they -- to -- But it's a whole lot but still it doesn't seem to be a long term play. But thank you for the information Kristen I think the best part is because you have one of the states of great -- that's the you get to be part of that minority that -- a really great price for driving you don't want this to get popular is your gas prices will go -- -- almost certain. Will be just -- and about the Los Angeles -- you hate that he imagined the pipeline the -- made. It it'll be like you know you're 4045 as they complete the great you -- pipeline. And it's going out to Hollywood you don't want that new development. A -- -- -- we get into the car. On the road with a small cars is a Bluetooth streaming question -- -- -- is -- possible says Andrew. To get a two DP audio Bluetooth stereo streaming. Using USB Bluetooth adapter. Into my -- USB port. That's interesting because we still by the USB ports now and there are lots of USB adapters. You can get for computers. That work. Well we actually answer questions -- little white paper dolls take it here he was talking about using this and a 2009 Hyundai Sonata which has a USB port. And I don't believe this will work on I don't think there's any reason it would work because that port is only designed to read. Either a file structure on a USB garden. And which should be -- thirty -- -- or India as says that that's a good thing. Or you can it's it's also an iPod adapter -- -- you can plug in an iPod cable but it's only designed to read a couple of different types of signals. And it's not designed do not understand the input from a Bluetooth -- -- use of adaptors on your computer you need to install drivers. There have to be a program that can take advantage -- of the information coming across its. Eight wouldn't really who would work -- -- carcass there's no way to install the drivers into. But -- but there's a solution here actually. Think is there are some of Bluetooth adapters with an auxiliary -- So you just plug in your when -- to act fewer cars when they reached the port. And even though -- it's a -- connection you're not getting any sort of head unit functionalities that the volume. You can still stream -- is you've AT&T AT and DPI audio streaming from your device to you. The adapter into the car's sound system. Like this is a horse he -- the Blackberry makes one. It is like a little disk like -- make them -- make thumb Belkin makes them. -- everybody almost got threat and all of the message opera makes one so there's lots of Lisa -- battery powered. That's pretty list the one pick up there than it did sound are gonna the -- batteries -- and are taken out your card charges but for the most part they will work. Via its it's a little clunky. But I don't know if you really wanna get a two DP -- -- -- your head unit do it right. To work what you say it won't have -- when he logic control does volume evident that I mean Bluetooth streaming doesn't have much like to control the first place now there's no metadata via a Bluetooth streaming is there it's there but nobody's taken advantage of her. -- -- -- camera doesn't have it has got some comical Bluetooth and it for streaming but. Still no metadata so -- and two others and it looks so tantalizingly close right to stick of the USB Bluetooth adapter in their hand now. The corridors and read it and that's kind of a nifty thing I don't see -- carmaker racing do right at the firmware for that or. The manufacturers of the dongle writing -- firmware with the car making it easier for them listed. You know and they are having Bluetooth in their -- easier for them just use the current hardware they haven't at fidelity via the scene the they the manufacturers want the -- ago. Are right so now we come to the time of the day when we left that you. And this is the part -- week. This one's great. Its physical are burdened health segment also known as -- cars solid as well you send in pictures real picture and at some crap you scrape off the web we've all seen those already able to commend him. And you send us pictures that he can't quite believe and we put up for the world to see in the -- point man spoke on hope we're -- -- their license -- So here is our listener Jeremy. -- -- It's F one FF 250. Crew cab. Where someone is going over you because people that change the lettering on the tailgate. Toyota becomes tool and Mitsubishi becomes it to be yes we did they feel -- -- BS that it. And back. For -- -- -- crap and this board is now entered. The TU RD on the back. Little brown -- -- you know finally an -- about Twitter racing development vehicles in the tutored the it's a -- -- -- they're commonly held turns out but they don't deserve it now and this is different. Let's not spoken -- -- -- Mitsubishi. Of partisan policy here is -- -- in Atlanta writes in and says -- -- Nissan Pathfinder with it has been -- maybe by Georgia Tech -- -- you think. What we got here wow that's ugly. We have aero effects and I put that liberally quotes. Bearings on the front the rear defenders. Yellow ruling on that allows a lot going on there out of the get the yellow route -- -- entry in the rate change separate entities C lawyer -- under old was over his driveway taken -- doors offered a good reason this guy was doing this -- -- right next to. There ER. Yet that's beautiful and the thing of beauty. I wanna route 66 this past fall -- a white but I stumbled across this dental car. In Springfield Illinois this is bothering me like I can't tell you. This homeowners insurance people -- stuff like this I -- this is what this is what we see a lot of we see a lot of repeated okay to me out yet. We'll keep the growth buy them hell yes it looks like. Work on -- Is it. I can't tell it like -- for content you're back in just getting by like the beginning of the -- there maybe you out -- in early ninety's order in the eighties sedan -- Covered adventure covered and he the foot -- recovered an empty toothpaste tubes and looked like the doors covered in but -- select a bunch of pictures of -- -- you're accelerated. And as a bunch of pulled teeth on the A pillar who disgusting that's -- is the. In a way that a particular those bird those mechanical -- that shoppers on the top of the dash and this is like -- are tired but taken in the wrong direction. I didn't know we need him okay yeah. -- the top will always have its I was sitting on top. There's the -- -- and a body with -- on the top. Wow -- the man I hate you. Okay let's -- one or two more we -- this is why we that's -- we always come out of the law cars thing with a bittersweet feeling like why did we do that and why -- we stop. And get another art are here well my whole trip -- on my well way home from Maryland after -- and 03 a marquee spider which I bought. And admitted pit stop at a service or and I 95 thinking across -- -- -- is not great since it was taken on my Droid -- and don't bounce like. Just in case you're wondering yes that is a -- poster of the -- what we're looking at here well it looks like a and it -- -- first in the -- but noticed that the rear end -- -- from acidic. That's a different seat -- plane used on some serious jumping on this -- Right I don't know what's going on there as you might see it over you -- In May lead to specific in the front. The proportions that point looked but it's got on the roof there is -- -- it is a little -- any sick -- -- to make yeah now -- it will yes what are. I'd like Empire State Building and on scanner -- carved -- -- like feel foam foam core that's gonna be often for a underpants -- the director's right aerodynamic looks like it definitely is higher than your standard sixteen foot pass through so that's the problem. And he's gotta roll bar I think yes he does as you know when you've got a senator from building on your -- -- race of course and finally. Electric electrical tape numbers on the door at that our god. Like going on there on okay one more blanket catalog are the it's like a matter is the lemon there's a teacher -- and finally we have. -- -- The return if -- cannot -- over the fact that currently have means anymore and that is one of those people at. -- it's what we got here its early eighties -- V. Some things citations. -- before baton this was a Malibu one of the last Malibu is among Malibu for even Malibu like it all it is currently bad today and he's put on. Fender. Things off a Cadillac. Oh wow lot of elated com. What's going on with the -- weird kind of and over the -- exceed over the -- dude that's like those those -- equivalency you can get yeah cars the cranky when it rains but these are really pronounce it look like you book your -- that getting in the car and gas -- badly and you know those are sharp and he's got those -- go out writers on the corner. -- know recorders -- bumper are those those -- at the hard real Mars. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Connected by exactly -- exes or little you know cocktail corn gobs of some. I got from McGill C think -- got -- where this is taken but I don't think I want our Florida license because for. Like -- -- well thanks so much for that everybody aren't. Keep government email has had. It's heart attack at cnet.com -- -- cnet.com is sending your -- car photos and take your own. Those we once the originals that are never seen anywhere else and hopefully never will be. Let's -- the road now we on the road and start the year off with a bang well not really where is. Well the -- sipping cars in the world but. Don't not one that really has a huge tech -- performance headline around about -- -- that probably thirty a listening. Either have ever have owned ones -- statistically so let's get that out there. And take a -- in the 2011. Right Camry -- from Toyota let's take -- -- Now this being an iffy model means his dad's car not mom yes -- is the -- edition. It's a little bit. Nicer we'll entire package that did more aggressive external body it it may get a little suspension tuning as well I'm not really sure about that yet didn't. Feel like -- much and we've been driving around. It still floats around on the corners and all that this yeah hardly a sports car all -- you can't get this with a V6. 3.5 liter V6 it's Toyota's engine they've been using for years for a lot of things. That is actually one disappointment -- with this car is that we in this particular 12 point five liter in -- -- -- engine. It's pretty much the same -- -- bad for a decade. And they put it did everything you get this thing -- underneath littlest silence -- -- Toyota Corolla. -- -- be surprised it's the next few yards every that would like to see the upgrade to direct injection and something to improve the fuel economy. Even though this'll probably get pretty good fuel economy one thing we did notice an upgrade is this as a six speed automatic transmission. Which I assume they've been using that maybe -- a couple years. But -- -- -- improvement over a five speed and that Valdez and better overdrive mileage on the freeway for cabin electronics. In this congress sitting I would -- a slight upgrade package which gives us XM satellite radio. We've got this what -- That term -- fluorescent display here. Means she believed plastic bags -- -- the article at night. Six speaker -- a home audio system nothing to write home about there. Yeah you did dice is actually lot of lines on this display which is nice you can see a lot of stuff and there's nothing USB ports so you don't have an iPod -- USB flash drive that sort of thing. You can also get a navigation system. Here that are gonna be that -- navigation system that we've seen in a doesn't Lexus at this point. It's not a bad system I don't know if they've made the jump from apart from -- to hard drive him. If -- sentinel last Toyota's -- mean that but I'm not -- on this current -- That's really just the most. Manila drive you guys have ever taken for crying out loud as does not mean there are a distinct -- -- -- -- -- the that the B roll of -- exercise the -- region and around the back -- and you never have never -- -- -- and anger at no -- behind the -- -- Never strike out and anger and -- camera doesn't fit. Well it's kind of -- with the transmission that because you can. -- -- like gears of this is the same transmission they Google's seen in some of the Lexus -- yeah. It it yet no reason to manually like years and these cars. Corporate sport mode I mean we do it -- were paid to do but there's no reason to. But in response in hand on -- around these back roads in the car while we're filming. -- dollars Beers and -- -- -- -- I did. Players when they but the transmission. I'm probably just imagining this but it seems to it doesn't do -- start stop but it seems to somehow disengaged when you were to stop a little bit of comedy as it loses all creep. When you come to the very last like mile per hour at a stop. And it's almost like it's kind of like freewheeling and then when you go to step on it has to re engage in the Kokomo transmission if you notice anything like that is it just me at is that it was under powered. Nothing but it feels like it feels like it's so -- that start but affiliate almost free -- it'll look into that -- -- is going on that transmission that's. Kind of a disconnect they're doing to take the drag off when you come to a stop like cab drivers do there was -- -- -- the neutral or park park. To those -- disconcerting it's on a driver's car so who cares. And that let you guys mention refreshed head unit for the basic unit. With a new display. The Bluetooth technology is about all I found kind of interest in it does now have at least. Track forward track back. Two volumes you can obviously just the going on your phone or on the dash which I think is troublesome for the average user a lot of folks -- gonna have their rocker on the phone all the way down -- wonder -- became in the volume. And a -- a Bluetooth profile does not like a base volume level it's just. It's India now evident that the -- -- all the time yeah it's 80 yeah I always have the opposite. Kind of turn your gentle way of on the phone. And then when I get out the card -- headphones and a bloom has to have -- But it's got track up tracked down pause play -- volume. If it's relatively full featured as far as the Bluetooth spec go public you're saying earlier no one's doing the meta data yet -- and it. I don't get that I don't know either I think it's a combination of maybe the -- that sending it in the -- -- bankers that there's no point doing in and yes. The other side the it -- of the phone manufacturers in a nobody's using it west and. This is why Bluetooth theaters not a standard is one of sloppy standards out there it's really badly -- it lose. -- -- suggestions -- that's what equipment outages in the iPod connection today via iPod cable for the USB port. -- -- pretty good job of make it impossible to browse the music library on this small screen. Yeah this is a monochromatic screen and that -- -- what -- -- data thinkpad again it has some button across the bottom and the equate to -- like artist album stuff like that you can booted in each category and you can tune in music pretty quickly pretty easily. It is a little bit slow which is just an -- for some reason Toyota's Lexus is there iPod that connections are always slow and it takes long time of the data their refresh when news yeah. But browse through different albums or artists the end zipped through a song -- it'll just you'll lose it yeah yeah yeah that's so frustrating because then you quickly wanted to -- -- -- my phone with a display. Go back pick it up again. Flick through it -- it works really well and and I'm distracted or more distracted. This and I did any work at the right SM bus garage style on all days back here SC arts of -- -- -- of the middle model its second from the top of the gas engine cars. And it's right in the middle between the cheapest one of the hybrid. We mentions that the two and a half liter 479. Horsepower six speed automatic. -- I -- -- -- when -- her nude photos of the day actually is it's actually got a ad tool exhaust system. It's that true tool and others to mufflers and back to tips come. And I -- and one treats you so. It's just as -- It's a holdover from the V6 model that -- why would you -- using a different unit completely -- you just slap different modular engine in the admin utility that also make it looks warrior of the Tennessee. Not for me for this -- but usually other so penny pinching on these kinds of cars in particular -- right -- are margin monster cars that they will say no let's not waste another muffler. That'll save us seven dollars and manufacturing -- -- -- saving seven dollars in the effects servers it is spending. X million dollars and -- design a second system went -- the -- the stars kind of pricey to -- at the mystic report 2.3 something based went through five days and -- -- up 25000 which. And -- for a camera and they have got surprised by that -- 26 is based before delivery. This guy and point three a bit of a Toyota premium the Canon I think -- in on the that word you know they have to concede the you know that the card and it. Had -- -- will mean even. So -- in my -- well every generation of Emory the -- really so he really has a camera guy had already broken and a bit different dead cartilage it is that are orbit he literally drive the twenty and Andrea at the -- and -- the line -- as the Yaris corolla matrix. Then camera so this car has moved up a notch or so in its history not bad parlayed that was a bottom and comes of the matrix yet human -- -- know that -- you know. And they have Prius -- Avalon. Apple on the -- -- phones or if they can't route commenting we do is we get the camera in its massive and it's almost the same size as the -- but -- -- -- -- -- Inches that that -- vehicles and size via. Which of course the Avalon really reprints allow larger in person -- lead but I mean. Footprint -- -- that -- news and Virginia adding that's Cameron in some countries the -- chauffeur driven car oh yeah you can't beat are you kidding that's how about Europe and that. -- -- where they were a C class is is a taxicab. Anyway camera there it is for what it's worth -- It's a really good car mean the -- excited about. And that's all we can if I think liberals have -- -- our lives all of these and other one -- -- well I guess if a minute though -- -- aren't. They can't read interesting because it kind of a baseline of what's acceptable in a vehicle. Oh and item in at least you know maybe -- come from the growing up -- -- camera helpful yeah but you know the camera may not be exciting. And and then I'll be the first person -- united the most boring -- America but. -- think it'd. Like kind of blueprint for it but Cardiff and at least do this. If a card does all this it's gonna work for a lot of people exactly and I think that's that's why they'll have a problem filling them now yet Camry accord. They both of the exact same thing I've always found the accord more. I'm just more interest to keep my finger on it but that's just that's before -- important news Yahoo! does not immortal record used to be. Released on hard drive in early -- Yeah I editor at a first generation accord it was like I would note that that would run circles around -- -- my -- little Italian opera but you know there's been a long time since of this these two cars -- bread and butter. -- -- 300000. Units a year. Just each at the whole lot of the polar parts by the way running circles around your friends the time not to bother fixing among reflected back -- -- specify that otherwise you might get beaten. Well -- -- idea -- you see the races can I've got that 'cause it's in the CNET car tech garage. As we kick things off the top here. We're just -- -- -- fresh scars in and as we've got coming we have that camera of course is going is up reviews and what that review that video shortly. And the next up on deck to come into our garage is the newest song sounds cheesy. And -- was sort of a favorite of mine the I don't know why it's -- always been a -- -- little car. And in the new BMW 740 hi this is the -- of hybrids out right now this is they actually a smaller displacement seven series so. With a better fuel economy guys the -- that the three leaders -- -- about dual Turbo charge. She writes of a call -- forty but it's no longer four point something BA it's now a 335. Him and he get a kind of power that engines oh yeah yeah we're expecting good things from that aren't so that is the one and that -- -- way that's that's the -- seven in Europe as I understand it they love the big seven with the small efficient engine that we -- we don't have to get this country. That's kind of a cool combination to see is a flagship sedan -- them frankly kind of a modest engine at least in terms of displacement these big it'll they get a lot out of that guy. And that we loved it in the in disease for in the 335 by the -- that's becoming a go to -- that and and 55 and so. That's what's coming up we'll get a lot more carton to about next week is -- him very good list were able we're gonna keep those close in the chest until we get there okay folks that's our show for this week -- episode 200. Thanks for being with us and we'll see you next week in the meantime. Keep those emails coming its car tech.
