86 remix: Toyota hybridizes sports coupe with GR HV Sports concept

Now what we've got here is Toyota's GR HV Sport Concept.
Now it was built by the automakers Gazoo Racing Performance division and is based on the 86 Sport Coupe.
Which means it should have rear wheel drive handling and a nice toss able platform.
It's also got a foldable Targus style roof similar to that of the MX5RF but that's not what makes this concept most interesting.
Now whats got us scratching our heads is whats happening under the hood.
That's where you'll find a performance hybrid power train based on Gazoo's racing TS 050 rally car over there.
It keeps its hybrid battery pack in the middle of the chassis so things are nice and easily rotatable.
And it's got an interesting and sort of novel way of handling a manual shift mode.
Rather than paddle shifters like with most automated manuals, it's actually got and H pattern shifter, similar to that of a standard manual transmission.
So you route through your six gears, just like you would if you had a clutch.
Only there's not a clutch and the computer handles all of the shifting itself, it's automatic but it's also manual.
It's a bit confusing, just need to drive this car to figure out what's happening Unfortunately I'm probably not gonna get a chance to do that because Toyota and Gazoo Racing are both being very cagey about the production aspirations, so I'm probably gonna have to wait for this technology to make it's way into a production car somewhere down the road.
Maybe that Supra people keep spreading rumors about.
