2022 GMC Hummer EV: This Is It

Speaker 1: All right. I'm finally at the first drive of the brand new GMC, ho EV. And it is, what's Speaker 2: Different. Speaker 1: That's some 60 quickness right there, man. I kind of feel like I need a cigarette if I smoked. Speaker 1: [00:00:30] All right. So what we have here is a 205 kilowat hour battery, which is good for about 329 miles of range. But remember, that's in perfect conditions and you're not gonna get that here on the dirt. How much less is it gonna be? I mean, [00:01:00] I don't know what would take some testing, but will definitely, definitely be less. I've got a three motor set up here. So one in the front and two in the rear, and that's gonna give me enough power for a thousand ponies and 1,200 pound feet of torque. That's what I am talking about now, when it comes to charging, this is an 800 volt system. So if a, I can find a 350 kilowat charging station, I can get a hundred miles in about 12 minutes, but if you can't find [00:01:30] something that quick, don't worry, this vehicle will still charge on the legacy 400 volt system. Speaker 1: And you'll be just fine. It'll just take a little bit longer, but let me tell you, this truck would not be as good as it is offroad. If it weren't four or the rear steering, so this will go 10 degrees in phase. And that's when you get that cool crabwalk or 10 degrees out of phase. And that helps bring the rear end around because this baby is big 18 feet long, a wheel base of 11 and a half feet. If you were [00:02:00] trying to drive this without rear steer, trust me, you'd be doing so three point turn. So I love the fact that I can really get into some tight places in here and just have a lot of fun. I mean, it's it really belies the fact of how big this thing is. I mean, it's like, it's almost like driving a fricking hatchback on these roads Speaker 1: And yep. This vehicle it's real big. It's real heavy. About 9,000 pounds, 2,800 of that is battery, but that's just the nature of the beast, right? [00:02:30] Batteries weigh a lot. The humer is a big vehicle, but there's a couple things you have to keep in mind. Number one. Sure. These brakes are great, but you still have all of this mass that you have to mitigate. So you gotta be careful, right? You need to make sure that you're breaking early. You need to be cognizant of the fact of how much weight you've got. I mean, physics is physics. You guys, Speaker 1: One of the things I really like, abouting in an EV and you guys know I'm not quiet. I love [00:03:00] how I'm out here and I can hear the birds chirping and I can hear my tires going over the rocks. And I can, I just feel like I'm a little bit more connected with what's happening around me because I don't have that engine noise. And like, don't get me wrong. You guys, I love a good V8. I really do. But there is something about going out into this wonderful planet that we've been given and being quiet. Speaker 1: [00:03:30] Now, when you're gonna drive off road in an EV, there's a few learning curves that you're gonna have to deal with and that's region, right? Because when you lift your foot off, the throttle, the vehicle is gonna wanna stop. Now, GMC has programmed [00:04:00] you Jen in here, so you can make it a little bit, or you can make it a lot of bit, but it's always gonna be there. So you really need to practice getting that precise, precise throttle control. Now they've helped you out in terrain mode. A little bit. Terrain mode will use the mechanical brakes, but it feels a little bit like region. So you're not gonna have to like try to learn two different ways of operating the throttle from in mode to off road mode. Still. It is a different driving experience. So don't beat yourself up. If you're not perfectly smooth, when you first try it out, there are [00:04:30] a few things though that I'm a little like yeah. Speaker 1: About the Hummer, right? Number one. I mean these 35 inch tires are great. They're good, your Wranglers, but I ain't got no spare. There's no spare. There's no in the Hummer now to be fair, you can get a aftermarket spare tire carrier, which you should definitely do, because you're gonna take this vehicle off road. You're gonna want a spare tire. Probably two. Now a lot of you might have a problem with, oh, this doesn't have solid axles. How could it be an off-road vehicle? Like, yes, sure. It has independent suspension all the [00:05:00] way around, but here's a thing. You know what? The trade off is really great ride quality. I could probably drive this truck 10 hours and get out and run a marathon. Like if I ran marathons, cuz why would I do that? There's not a lot of head tos in here. Everything is very smooth. The one thing that I don't like, however, is that with an independent suspension, you do miss a little bit of articulate. Now most of you probably aren't gonna worry about it so much, but if you're gonna be a little hardcore, you're gonna wanna disconnect Yourway bars. You [00:05:30] can't do that in this, this one only has a front sway bar. You can't disconnect it electronically. I mean, if you can go in there with a wrench sure, but you can't do it on the fly. Speaker 1: Now, if you haven't ever driven an EV before, you're probably gonna be weirded out by this instant torque. But I love it. You don't have to carry any momentum. All you gotta do is press down your foot a little bit and you got boom, 1200 pound feet of it right there waiting for you. And then when you add in that [00:06:00] awesome rear steer, I mean, this thing is so nimble. It's really quick. I wish that nobody else was on this trail with me so that I could really ring it out. Cuz this trail does not touch the capability of this Eagle. Not at all. Speaker 1: [00:06:30] All right. So I wanna show you some cool features that we've got here. Number one, the multi-functional tail. I love this thing from GMC. You can operate at six different ways. I think it's really cool. Also check out these toe hooks. I mean like there's two in the back and there's two in the front and they're crazy massive because if you get this thing stuck, you're gonna need a massive toast trap because of course, this thing is massive. Now we've been on the trail. Why is it things so good on the trail? What part of the reason is [00:07:00] geometry? So my departure angle here is over 33 degrees. My break over angle here. It's about 25 degrees. I've got 12 inches of ground clearance and then here in the front 44 degrees of approach angle. So when you're an off road or terrain modes I'm mean this thing's like really unstoppable. I had such an awesome time today. Now, if you'd like to get yourself one of [00:07:30] these 2022 Hummer EV first editions, well, there is that little tiny problem of the price. This thing comes in one trim in one color and with one interior and it's gonna set you back 112,000 American dollars, but that does include a $1,600 for destination. So bonus right now, if you're looking for something a little bit less expensive, you can wait until 2023 when we will have a less expensive, but also less capable humer that will come to the market.
