2022 Ford F-150 Raptor Goes Big With 37-Inch Tires
Speaker 1: And going, this is stupid. A stock truck should not be able to do this. And here I am. Well, it's a little bit of a windy day out here in Johnson valley, home of the infamous king of the hammers offroad race, but I don't care cuz I got the perfect vehicle. The 20, 22 Ford F-150 Raptor. Now we're gonna do two things today. We're gonna find ourselves a steep and Rocky hill and we're gonna find ourselves some. Whoops, so got my adventure [00:00:30] pants on. I got my adventure. Boots on. Let's go have an adventure.
Speaker 1: All right. Now, before we get going, I wanna show you some of the ways that you can customize your Raptors drive experience. So here on the steering wheel, there is a button for exhaust. So I can push that and I can have quiet normal sport or Baja personally. I don't really think this thing sounds all that great. So I'm just gonna keep it in Baja mode. I can do the same thing for the dampers can have normal sport or off road and the same thing again [00:01:00] for the steering. I've got normal comfort sport and boom off road. Now, if you don't wanna mess with any of that, you can also use these preconfigured drive modes through this dial down here. So I've got modes for slippery towing and hauling sport, normal, deep snow and sand Baja. That's what I like and uh, rock crawl. So if you don't really wanna mess with any of these buttons, just put it in Baja mode and have fun in terms of the cabin. I mean, I really like it. I [00:01:30] love the blue color that I've got going on here. These Ricardo seats are super comfortable. I've got some contrasting stitching. There's a really cool little like American flag, Easter egg on the side and you can save handles to get in, even on the passenger side cuz short people can't get into these trucks. All right. Should we go find some fun? Let's go find some fun
Speaker 1: Now. Yes, this is the third generation Raptor, but they [00:02:00] didn't change anything under the hood. You still have the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 good for 450 horsepower and 510 pound feet of torque. And that's made it to Ford's excellent. 10 speed. Automatic transmission. I mean look, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Right? But this one has also got the optional 37 inch tires. Now it's part of a $7,500 package. But the good news is that you get more ground clearance, about 13 inches of ground clearance. You get 33.1 degrees of [00:02:30] approach, angle 25 degrees of departure angle and 24.4 degrees of breakover angle. All right. So this hill, which is super steep, was part of the king of the Hammer's race track this past winter. So, uh, let's see, we're gonna put this baby in four low cuz it's pretty steep and it's also pretty, um, Rocky.
Speaker 1: So we're gonna change it to rock crawl, perfection that is going to automatically [00:03:00] put it in for lo and it will also lock the rear end. Now in this mode, I can also use Ford's one pedal driving, which will basically eliminates the need to have a left foot breaking. So you can lift up on the throttle and it will proportionally apply the brakes. I mean it's, it's fine. But as someone who really prides herself on throttle control, like, no, I'm not, I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna left foot break myself if I need to, because I'm a crotch of the old lady <laugh> now I don't have a front locker in this, but [00:03:30] I do at least have a front limited slip differential it's available. It's not standard, but it is nice to have in these steep and Rocky situations. And I also have, you know, like I said, a 12 foot, come on, baby.
Speaker 1: There you go. I also have a 12 foot wheel base. So you really have to be able to pick your line carefully. There we go, come on my final drive here. I got four 10 axle ratio final drive. So really as long as you pay attention [00:04:00] to that wheel base, you can kind of scramble your way up, pretty much anything. Now, in addition to those 37 inch tires, what's also new. This year is a five link rear suspension and that gets longer trailing arms a plus a 24 inch coil spring. So that means that that old leaf spring that is gone, baby gone. So when you combine that with the 3.1 inch box live valve shocks, in theory, in theory, I should be able to get more power down and feel more stable [00:04:30] when I get to the high speed. Whoops. So, um, let's go find some, whoops.
Speaker 1: All right. I've got a long, straight stretch of whoops in front of me. I've put the truck into Baha mode to unlock its full potential. And that also means that I don't have gear sticks through 10. All I have is one through five, so it really keeps it in the power band. So let's see what happens. All right. Flooring it pretty good power delivery, hand, little bit of turbo lag, but not bad. All right. A little tiny jump here. I think. Yep. <laugh> [00:05:00] now it doesn't feel more stable. I mean sure, but you still have to commit and you still really have to trust the vehicle. I mean, you guys, I am not lifting at all 65 miles an hour because if I lift right here or God forbid, if I try to break, no you're gonna lose control of the truck. So you have to woo. Make sure that you're gonna be in a place where you're not gonna get into trouble, right? Because you come across something that's [00:05:30] too big for the truck to handle or a hole or a turn or a kid on a motorcycle. It's all gonna go wrong for you. So just because you can go that fast, you have to make sure that you are doing it in a safe manner, but that was super fun. So it's um, let's do that again.
Speaker 1: And here's the thing, right? I'm doing this on the 37 inch tires, which allows for less travel than on the 30 fives. I have 13 inches of [00:06:00] travel in the front and 14 inches of the rear. Now that's not really anything to sneeze at sure. But like I can get an inch more with the 30 fives and like an inch more is an inch more, am I right? <laugh> this truck is stupid. <laugh> I mean, it's definitely the best handling truck in the whoops. Now I haven't driven the TRX. So I can't speak to that. But I mean, come on, what else is gonna touch this truck? Silverado's ER, [00:06:30] two. No, it's not long travel. Colorado's ER, two. No, it's not long travel and it's a midsize like, forget it. This is it. This is it. Ram rebel. Nope. Not gonna happen. This is it. So I think the moral of the story here is that if you know, you're gonna be doing some slow speed rock call and stuff, maybe stick with the 30 sevens. But if this high speed shit is your jam, you can go the 30 fives. I would love to try this road on the 30 fives because I bet I could get three miles per hour faster. [00:07:00] I mean, I've seen like 65, 67 on this road. I would really like to see 70, really like to see 70.
Speaker 1: Now, one thing I forgot to mention, cuz I was too busy, having so much fun is that you can also get pro power on board so you can get the onboard 200 wat generator, which frankly would be perfect for tailgate parties. And pitten for your friends in the Baha 1000 now when it comes to price. Well, you're looking at a starting price of just over $71,000, including [00:07:30] 1,795 bucks for destination. But this guy as it sits 82 grand. Now you guys that is a lot of money, but trust me, this is a lot of truck.
