2007 Audi A6
>> A lot of the cars we review have one or two technologies that are really outstanding. This is not one of them. Let's meet the all around tech capable Audi A6 4.2

The navigation system's the first place I want to take you. That is optional, either a la carte or as part of a four thousand dollar tech package. The resolution and the display on this one is good, not perfect. The anti-aliasing is a little bit blurry, and when it starts to move fonts around on the diagonal, they can become a little distorted and hard to read. But overall it's in the you know, eightieth percentile if you will of nav system displays. You can touch it all you want, it's not gonna do anything. It's not a touch screen. Instead it uses MMI, the multimedia interface, which is Audi's combination of a knob that you can twist, click, and four compass buttons if you will that are around it, and those are analogous to the menu choices you'll see on the screen. So here I go into the nav menu, and these four corner functions all relate to the four buttons in the same corners. It takes a little getting used to. I don't find it the most intuitive system, a touch screen's obviously the best. Let's move on to the entertainment system now, of course you've got AM and FM, that's obviously gonna be baseline. Hitting the CD AUX button brings you to this menu here, and when I press the button for source, I can get to either my CD changer right there, where does it live? You hit this odd glove box button up here, which no one ever seems to find, and then you find your six disc changer down there in the glove box. Now that's standard by the way. But the other source that's really interesting on this guy is what's called the Audi music interface. I can roll down to it here and select that, and now you're looking around, where's the iPod cable? Where's the AUX jack? Well, it's kind of an interesting situation. Open the magic glove box again. Down here right next to the changer is this, I think it's an eighteen pin connector, very proprietary looking thing. And you buy a cable that plugs into that. The only one available now is an iPod cable, but Audi says they're working on other ones. Now Audi crows a lot about their advanced parking system. You pop it in reverse, obviously you've got the LCD right here, and you've got the camera mounted in the tail of the car. That's an optional technology, it comes with the tech package again. You've got the lines there that follow your steering trajectory, that's the orange set of lines, and then you've got three blue boxes which we walked off, and they're basically the exact same length of the car. So those give you the exact footprint of the vehicle, so you can tell width and length, if it's gonna fit where you think you're gonna put it. Now I take you to the engine bay on this car, which I don't often do on a lot of vehicles, because it's so pretty. Four point two liter, direct fuel injection, direct spark V8, three fifty horse, three twenty five foot pounds. This thing is crisp and precise, I love this power plan. Part of the credit of course goes to the gear box. Six speed automatic, it's your only choice, and it's got a tiptronic shifting ability to it on the gear level itself, plus you've got quatro full time all wheel drive of course. Let's price our A6. This four point two V8 with the quatro all wheel drive is fifty five three. Then we add sixteen hundred for navigation, that's a good price for that kind of system, three hundred dollars gets you the Audi music interface with the interchangeable cables, and two thousand for adaptive cruise, our car didn't have that. The wildcard here is the technology package, consider that. Because you're going to get the navigation system, the Sirius satellite radio, advanced key start stop push button touchless technology, and that's how you get that advanced parking system we showed you as well. So depending on your interests, that could be a better deal.
