The VW T-Prime Concept GTE bows in Beijing (pictures)

The T-Prime Concept GTE is a plug-in hybrid, marrying a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine to electric motors.

Net output is 375 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, sent through all four wheels.

It's capable of traveling up to 31 miles on battery power alone, thanks to a 14.1-kWh, lithium-ion battery. In performance mode, it reaches 60 mph in just 6.0 seconds.

The concept's exterior design is similar to that of the Audi Q7, with emphases on horizontal width and a slim silhouette that's more wagon than crossover.

In fact, we'd bet dollars to donuts that much of this look will translate over to a future Volkswagen Touareg.

Inside the car, you'll find nothing but touchscreens and gesture controls. There isn't a single piece of physical switchgear.

Even the shifter lacks a physical connection to the transmission.

If you like screens, there are three big ones -- a 12.0-inch screen in the instrument binnacle, a 15.0-inch infotainment display and a 9.6-inch screen for rear-seat occupants.

We'd bet dollars to donuts that several design elements you see here translate over to a future generation of Volkswagen Touareg.

VW plans to launch seven new, electrified vehicles in The Middle Kingdom, along with building a new design and development center, within the next few years, and this concept represents that start of that push.
