Volkswagen XL Sport is an efficiency-focused supercar (pictures)

PARIS -- This is the Volkswagen XL Sport, a re-imagining of the XL1, a diesel-hybrid that managed over 200 mpg.

With the XL Sport, the focus is more on performance.

The diesel-hybrid powertrain has been replaced by a 1,199cc V-twin motor from VW's corporate cousin Ducati.

The Superlegerra motor gives roughly four times the power of the previous car.

Gull-wing doors are still standard.

Bigger magnesium wheels add more grip without adding too much weight.

Carbon-fiber construction also keeps this thing below 2,000 pounds (890 kg).

A minimalist interior, with the passenger seat shifted slightly back to save room.

Plenty of new wings and fins and louvers.

Bigger brakes are needed to handle the extra power.

The Ducati heart, wedged in the narrow engine bay.

A seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox is used.

Red stitching in the sports seats are another indicator of the extra performance.

Not much cargo space, but enough for a brisk trip to the grocery store.
