Trax marks the spot: Chevrolet freshens up its compact crossover (pictures)

The Trax features a new exterior that you may have first seen on GM's European-market Opel Mokka.

Its look brings it in line with other recent Chevy products such as the Cruze and Malibu.

The Trax remains powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

The only available transmission is a six-speed automatic.

Higher trim levels mean larger wheels and LED daytime running lights and taillights.

But no matter what trim you opt for, you've got a fresher face staring back at you.

It's not very often you see a car being refreshed after just a year on sale.

Of course, there's a reason for this -- it's been on sale for longer in other markets, so an update was due.

Expect to see several new design cues making its way to a new Buick Encore this year, as well.

The 2017 Trax will go on sale later this year.

At the time of writing, Chevrolet has not disclosed any pricing information.

As the subcompact crossover segment continues to grow, Chevrolet hopes its refreshed Trax will keep it competitive.

The 2017 Trax features a much prettier interior than before, and a new electrical architecture means that its MyLink infotainment system now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Trax's competition includes the Honda HR-V and the Fiat 500X.

This segment will soon include the production version of Toyota's C-HR concept.
