The Green Hornet's Black Beauty hands on

To help celebrate the release of The Green Hornet on Blu-ray and DVD, Sony Pictures brought the hero's car, the Black Beauty, down under.

This is one of the reported 29 Chrysler Imperials (1964/66) used for the movie. During filming, 26 of these were wrecked, while only three survived in good nick.

As you might guess, the machine guns and rocket launchers aren't real.

What is this modified Imperial running under the hood? A GM ZZ454 V8, of course. That's 454 for the number of cubic inches, or about 7.4-litres in today's money. When fired up, it could wake the dead and, if you need to outrun a herd of zombies or baddies, there's 373kW of power on hand.

Oh, and the rear diff is a Ford unit. To handle all the power, four-wheel disc brakes have been fitted.

In its day, the Imperial was a luxury vehicle. For the movie, the cars have been stripped down to the bare essentials.

Indeed, we'd wager that the rear seat wouldn't be very comfortable at all.

If you want to get up close and personal with Black Beauty, it will be on display at the second State of Origin match on 15 June in Homebush, Sydney. It will also make an appearance at the Supanova festival in the Dome at Sydney's Olympic Park, on 18 June and 19 June.
