The 2017 Genesis G90 is your first look at Hyundai's new luxury brand (pictures)

The Genesis G90, formerly known as the Equus, is the first official member of the new Genesis brand. Hyundai is spinning off its luxury division into its own separate brand to give it a better shot at going toe-to-toe with the best on offer from places like Germany and the US.

Cars are Andrew's jam, as is strawberry. After spending years as a regular ol' car fanatic, he started working his way through the echelons of the automotive industry, starting out as social-media director of a small European-focused garage outside of Chicago. From there, he moved to the editorial side, penning several written features in Total 911 Magazine before becoming a full-time auto writer, first for a local Chicago outlet and then for CNET Cars.

The Genesis G90, also known as the EQ900 in Korea, is Hyundai's first car to be included under the all-new Genesis luxury marque.

The G90 adopts much of its design language from the Hyundai Genesis sedan, including the general shape of its front end.

The rear, with its smooth edges and tall taillights, is more reminiscent of the outgoing Equus.

In Korea, the G90 will come with three different engines -- a naturally aspirated six-cylinder, a turbocharged six-cylinder and a naturally aspirated eight-cylinder. The G90 is rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available.

The G90's interior features several parts that will look immediately familiar to Hyundai Genesis owners.

The Genesis G90 will continue in Hyundai's tradition of supplying plenty of physical switchgear. If you want to control it, there's probably a button for it.

The rear seats have a layout similar to other super-luxury vehicles. Adjustable rear seats are swathed in plush leather, and passengers can use the tablets connected to the front seats to adjust parts of the infotainment system.

The G90 first appeared in renderings released in November. You can see many similarities between the concept and what made it to production.

The G90 doesn't go on sale in the US until later next year, but we'd bet dollars to donuts that it'll make an appearance at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this coming January.
