Supercars at the 2011 Melbourne Motor Show

Let's face it, getting up close and personal with the loudest, fastest, rarest and most expensive beasts is often the highlight of a motor show, and this year Melbourne didn't disappoint.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

Let's face it, getting up close and personal with the loudest, fastest, rarest and most expensive beasts is often the highlight of a motor show, and this year Melbourne didn't disappoint.

There are supercars and then there are supercars, with the latest and greatest model from the house of the raging bull falling into the latter category. Bristling with all manner of high tech features, the Aventador is powered by a new mid-mounted 6.5-litre V12 with 515kW and 650Nm.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

With much of the body made from lightweight, strong, but extremely expensive carbon fibre, the Aventador weighs 1575kg. It will race past 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 350km/h. All yours for a cool AU$789,000.

The Lamborghini-derived 5.2-litre V10 has hit the gym and come out with 412kW and 540Nm.

Audi R8 GT

An aluminium body with plenty of carbon fibre parts keeps the Audi's weight to 1525kg and allows the car to hit 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. If you haven't yet ordered this AU$470,700 piece of exotica, forget about it, as the five earmarked for Australia are spoken for.

Lexus LFA

Made from a mixture of aluminium and carbon fibre, and powered by a 4.8-litre V10, the most outrageous Lexus ever can hit 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 325km/h.

Australia's initial allocation of five has doubled, but the price is still a cool AU$700,000.

Porsche 911 Speedster

Want top-down 911 motoring, but find the regular cabriolet too common? Well the Speedster's for you. That's only if you're speedy enough to snap up one of the 356 being made.

Lower, wider and with a more steeply reclined windscreen, the Speedster also sacrifices the cabrio's folding soft top. Clearly, it's a car best saved for sunny days.

Nissan GT-R

The exterior changes are hard to pick, but the refreshed GT-R sports a twin turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 with 390kW, or 33kW more than before, allowing this four-wheel drive behemoth to hit 100km/h in around three seconds.

An AU$168,800 car can never be a bargain in absolute terms, but in supercar territory it's a steal.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe

It seems almost inconceivable that it's taken Mercedes so long to come up with an M3 coupe rival, but it's finally here.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe

With a 6.2-litre V8 under the hood and 336kW at its disposal (358kW if you opt for the AMG performance package), the C63 can dispatch 100km/h in 4.5 seconds (4.4 if yours has that performance package).

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG

Despite baring the "63" designation, the CLS63 is actually powered by a 5.5-litre V8 twin-turbo engine.

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG

In standard form it has 386kW and 700Nm, but power can be upped to 410kW with an AMG performance package. The latter will shave 0.1 seconds off the 4.4 seconds that the regular model takes to get to 100km/h.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

It's not quite production ready, but come 2013 a car very similar to this will see the light of day and be badged as the BMW i8.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

This is a supercar with a difference, as it's a hybrid — and a diesel one at that. An electric motor and a three-cylinder turbo-diesel will together produce 241kW of power and take the car from zero to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

Jaguar XKR-S

If you've always thought that the XK or XKR prioritised beauty over aggression, the XKR-S might well redress that imbalance.

Jaguar XKR-S

The body kit, vents, louvres, wings and carbon fibre addenda help the car make the most of the 405kW and 680Nm coming from its supercharged V8. The Jaguar dismisses 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.
