2018 Subaru XV will make its way to America as a new Crosstrek

Say hello to what will become the next Subaru Crosstrek.

Here in Europe, it's referred to as the Subaru XV, a name that existed for a spell in the US before being shortened to simply "Crosstrek."

This is the first major redesign for the Crosstrek since its introduction in 2012.

Like before, it's largely the same as the Subaru Impreza hatchback off which it's based.

However, unlike the Impreza, it boasts a taller ride height and additional cladding on the lower part of the body.

All-wheel drive is still standard, like it is on nearly every other Subaru.

In Europe, the sole engine on offer is a 154-horsepower, 2.0-liter flat-four. It comes mated to a continuously variable transmission.

In the US, that number is likely to dip to the same 152-horsepower output seen on the 2017 Impreza.

The US Impreza gets a manual in certain trims, so perhaps the Crosstrek will, too. But that's not necessarily a given.

We'll learn more about the US-specification Crosstrek after it debuts at the New York International Auto Show in April.
