Subaru STI Performance concept: Part Super GT, part super street (pictures)

NEW YORK — Subaru pulls off the wraps on its new STI Performance concept at the 2015 New York auto show.

Based on the Subaru BRZ sports coupe, the concept exist to showcase the US expansion of Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the performance division of Subaru.

Despite its wild styling, the list of modifications by Subaru is surprisingly tame.

The STI Performance concept features an upgraded intake and exhaust, as well as chassis and body modifications.

The chassis modification include an upgraded suspension setup.

Body modifications include the crazy-wide body kit and rear diffuser.

The STI concept still puts its power to the rear wheels. Those hoping for an all-wheel-drive variant of the BRZ will have to wait a while longer.

The exhaust exits through twin center pipes.

Wheels and tires have been upgraded to something more race appropriate.

The BRZ's door handles have been shaved and replaced with flush cantilever pulls.

Subaru tells us that the STI Performance concept's 2.0-liter engine is based on the racing engine from the Subaru BRZ Super GT race car.

Final power hasn't been stated, but it's safe to assume that it's close to 300 horsepower and about 330 pound-feet of torque.

The front fascia is an aggressive evolution of the stock BRZ's front bumper, retaining the inverted trapezoid shape of the grill opening.

Side intakes visually form little winglets at the corners of the fascia.

According to Subaru's release, "In the future, further models tuned by STI will be available in the US. These cars could feature more extensive modifications from the factory than previously offered, such as suspension, performance, braking, chassis and aerodynamic upgrades."

Of course, the concept also integrates the massive rear wing that is characteristic of Super GT racers.

Subaru has already started spreading its STI-engineered parts, which replacing Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) aftermarket parts in the US market. Plans for fully tuned STI vehicles have not been announced.
