SEMA 2008: The many faces of Hyundai's Genesis

Hyundai's new Genesis sedan is all but on showroom floors, but that didn't stop the Korean automaker from putting a few Genesis sedans and coupes in the hands of master tuners--DUB, RK Sport, and Rhys Millen Racing, among others--to turn out their improvements on the Genesis' formula.

If there's one thing that DUB knows, it's big rims. The 22-inch TIS wheels are color matched to the custom white pearl paint job.

The trunk of this white DUB Genesis is occupied by a custom audio system, which displays the three Alpine amplifiers and three Alpine 10-inch Type-R subwoofers behind a Plexiglas window.

The interior features white accents across the dash, the steering wheel, the seats, and various other pieces of trim. The seats have also been reupholstered in suede.

The centerpiece of the A/V experience is this Alpine DVD/LCD in-dash head unit with navigation.

DUB Genesis black

The white DUB Genesis has an evil twin in this sinister-looking black DUB Genesis sedan. Each 22-inch TIS modular rim features color-matched black spokes and a polished lip. Dark tint and a black grill complete the look of the front end.

Moving to the back, we see that the tail lamps have been smoked and a custom exhaust has been fitted.

Inside, we find a very good looking black interior with tan accents. The same Alpine DVD/LCD in-dash head unit provides the brains of the DUB Genesis' A/V system.

The mods on DUB's black Genesis sedan are actually quite mild and tasteful compared with most of the vehicles on display at SEMA 2008. These 7-inch headrest-mounted LCDs are about as extravagant as the audio system gets.

HKS Genesis Coupe

HKS breathes fire into the Genesis Coupe with its full turbo kit built around the HKS GT2835R Turbo. No official power numbers have been published, but it should be substantially higher than the 2-liter turbo's base 210 horsepower.

HKS Genesis Coupe

The interior of the HKS Genesis gets the typical show-car tacky interior treatment, with red door and center console panels, red seat inserts, and gratuitous use of what looks like suede.

We may not like the interior's looks, but we do like this Kenwood DDX712 DVD receiver. It doesn't include navigation, but it's a good low-price double-DIN DVD player that can be expanded upon with nav and Bluetooth as your budget increases.

RIDES Genesis Sedan

We already had a sneak peak at this Rides Genesis a few weeks ago, but now we can see the exterior. The custom metallic silver paint has blue flakes that create an effect that must be seen in person to truly be appreciated. The 22-inch three-piece chrome wheels and lowered suspension complement the Genesis' Mercedes-like aesthetic.

Inside, we see the integration of Apple computers and laptops in the back seat through the headrest-mounted monitors.

The vehicle featured a high-speed Internet connection that supported the onboard computers, iPods and iPhones, as well as up to 250 wireless users in the area.

iPod integration is standard on the Genesis sedan, albeit not with this level of customization.

In the trunk, you'll find a 20-inch Apple Cinema display and yet another Mac Mini computer.

RMR Genesis Coupe

This Rhys Millen Racing Genesis coupe is the polar opposite of the Rides and DUB vehicles, eschewing chrome wheels and heavy audio equipment in favor of a custom-fabricated eight-point rollcage, tons of chassis reinforcement, and the replacement of all body panels with ultralight carbon fiber.

RMR Genesis Coupe

A full-race aero package works with the completely re-engineered suspension to keep the RMR Genesis glued to the road. A huge Turbonetics T3 turbocharger gets the 2-liter engine boiling. Being a full race model, horsepower figures aren't published.

The Genesis' bodylines were taken into account when designing the RMR Genesis' wide carbon-fiber body kit. The increased width allows more tire to be fit into the wheel well, while simultaneously increasing the vehicle's track. These factors combine to make massive grip.

Street Concept Genesis

Stealth is the name of the game with this Street Concept Genesis Coupe. We're not sure who you could sneak by with such a huge spoiler, aggressive camo-graphics, and red-tinted headlamps.

RKSport Genesis Sedan

This RKSport Genesis Sedan is probably my favorite of the Geneses on display at SEMA. Under the hood, you'll find a 4.6-liter Tau engine, which produces 460-horsepower with the help of an IHI screw-type supercharger and 11 pounds of boost for performance driving. It'll hit 60mph in just under 5 seconds, and at just under 14 you'll have gone a quarter mile. With the help of cylinder-deactivation tech, it can do all of this while averaging an estimated 18 miles per gallon in city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway for the times when you're not pressing the pedal to the metal.
