Preview BMW X5 M and X6 M before Los Angeles debut (pictures)

BMW will introduce its X5 M and X6 M models to the world at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show. These SUVs offer incredible handling and performance, especially considering their size.

Both the X5 M and X6 M use this twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 with direct injection and BMW's VANOS valve control technology. Output comes to 567 horsepower between 6,000 and 6,500rpm, and 553 pound-feet of torque from 2,200 to 5,000rpm.

The X6 M, with its SUV coupe styling, is the bad boy of the duo, at least in looks. Both cars post similar performance, such as 4 seconds to 60 mph.

The X6 M and X5 M benefit from an all-wheel-drive system that can shift 100 percent of torque to rear or front wheels. The system defaults to rear-biased torque.

Both vehicles feature BMW's double stalk M mirrors, designed for aerodynamic efficiency.

Based on the X6, which BMW calls a "sport activity vehicle," the X6 M sacrifices some cargo and rear passenger space for its coupe styling.

The X6 M and X5 M come with 21-inch wheels, and a mixed tire set. These Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are wider at the rear (front: 285/35 R21, rear: 325/30 R21).

BMW's multicontour M sport seats come standard.

Instead of the dual-clutch transmissions of its other M cars, the X6 M and X5 M use an eight-speed automatic. However, this transmission has been designed to perform similar to the dual-clutch transmissions, and operates in the same fashion.

The 2016 X5 M uses similar running gear as the X6 M, although tuned to reflect its slightly different weight distribution and characteristics.

Adaptive LED headlights are available for both the X5 M and X6 M. Large air intakes upfront feed the engine's two turbochargers, which both use twin scrolls to minimize turbo lag.

These fender vents are designed to let air flow out of the wheel wells, increasing aerodynamic efficiency and helping cool the brakes.

The X5 M features a more conventional SUV body, with ample headroom for rear passengers and a full cargo area.

One key performance feature of the X5 M and X6 M is the adaptive suspension. An air suspension in the rear aids leveling and ride comfort, while adaptive dampers counteract body roll in the turns.

The exhaust system for both M cars uses electrically controlled flaps, which maintain BMW's desired engine note.

Both vehicles feature an electric power steering system that lets the driver choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings.
