Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid (photos)
At the 2010 New York auto show, Porsche launches its first hybrid. Based on the Cayenne SUV, the new hybrid can drive under electric power only up to 35 mph.
The Cayenne's hybrid version comes during a general model update, with a radically restyled front end. The Cayenne gets a grille more reminiscent of Porsche's sports cars than an SUV.
The Cayenne S Hybrid can be had with Porsche's active suspension, giving it sports car handling, not something you would expect from a hybrid SUV.
Although its new nose and slanted windshield make it look small, the new Cayenne is longer than the previous generation by 1.9 inches.
The Cayenne S Hybrid, like other Cayennes, comes standard with all-wheel drive. It is also possible to option in Porsche's rear-wheel torque vectoring system.
The combustion engine, at only 3 liters, is the smallest of all the Cayenne models, but it gets a supercharger and the hybrid system, putting combined output at 380 horsepower.
To balance the vehicle, the nickel metal hydride battery pack sits over the rear axle.
Porsche gave the cabin of the Cayenne a much-needed redesign, with a raised console and more-accessible controls.
