Nissan's highly anticipated supercar makes its North American debut, following on the heels of its unveiling at the Tokyo auto show last month. The $80,000 GT-R uses carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight down, and a powerful 3.8-liter twin turbo engine that should give it a 0 to 60 mph time of around 3.5 seconds.

When the restyled Impreza WRX was introduced earlier this year, it flopped, as the car seemed tamed from the previous model's wilder performance. But Subaru gave the new Impreza WRX its STi treatment, which will hopefully restore some of those super performance characteristics.

As BMW makes its cars bigger and more expensive, it opened up some room at the low end. BMW filled that space a few years ago with the 1-series in Europe. Now the 1-series is coming to the U.S. in the form of the 135i, which should be an impressive performer. BMW's smallest car will use its best engine, the twin turbo 3-liter straight-six.

The M3, the performance version of the 3-series, has always been a favorite of driving enthusiasts. BMW started showing off its newest M3 this year at the Frankfurt auto show. The M3's V-8 engine puts out 420 horsepower, and its carbon fiber roof gives it an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 8.3 lbs per horsepower.
