Photos: Dodge Grand Caravan safari

We've been reviewing the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan this week, which is the first car we've seen with Chrysler's MyGig system as an option. MyGig is an in-car media server, designed to hold photos and about 15 gigabytes of music. To test out MyGig in the Grand Caravan, we drove down to Santa Cruz from San Francisco, stopping along the way to get a few photos. We loaded the photos into the MyGig system, then took pictures of the results.

This is our steed, the Dodge Grand Caravan. For 2008, the Grand Caravan got a major update. Ours came equipped with the MyGig system and Sirius satellite TV, an interesting but somewhat limited option.

The MyGig system lets you transfer photos and music files from a USB drive to its hard drive. Music management options are excellent, but photos are limited. It only lets you store eight photos.

MyGig isn't really meant as a serious photo manager. Loading pictures is tedious, as you have to select and transfer them one at a time. Good thing it only stores eight. The pictures are meant to be used as personalized wallpaper for the MyGig music player.

Our first picture was taken from Twin Peaks, in San Francisco, which offers a spectacular view of the downtown area.

Taking the 280 freeway down from San Francisco, we stopped off to get a picture of this guy. He's Father Junipero Serra, the founder of many missions in California, from San Diego to Carmel. His statue presides over a rest stop on 280.

From 280, we took Highway 84 down to the coast, parking the Grand Caravan off of Highway 1 to get a picture of the ocean.

A little ways down Highway 1, we came across the Pigeon Point lighthouse and stopped to get a picture. At 115 feet, this lighthouse is one of the tallest in the country. It was built in 1872.

In Santa Cruz, we drove down West Cliff Drive and stopped off at this lighthouse. The lighthouse is the home of the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum.

One of the most popular surfing spots in Santa Cruz, Steamer Lane is bordered by the wharf and the cliffs of West Cliff Drive. The day we arrived only afforded low swells, so only one surfer was out.

We got our last photo that would fit in the MyGig system at Santa Cruz historic Boardwalk amusement park. This park is celebrating its 100th anniversary. In the background you can see the Giant Dipper, the park's wooden roller coaster, which was built in 1924.
