Photos: 60 years of Ferraris
Ferrari of Silicon Valley, in Redwood City, California, celebrated the Italian automaker's 60th anniversary by setting up a museum of some of the rarest Ferraris in existence. Scuderia Ferrari was actually founded in 1929, but that company only produced race cars. This 60th anniversary is for Ferrari S.p.A., the production car branch of the company. The cars on display at Ferrari of Silicon Valley are from the collection of Art Zafiropoulo, owner of Ultratech Technology, a semiconductor and nanotechnology company.
Ferrari's supercar, the Enzo, is well known among Ferrari-istas, but it entered the popular culture after a spectacular crash in Southern California last year. Only 400 Enzos were built.
The Enzo is powered by a 6-liter V-12 that produces 651 horsepower at 7,800rpm. The car's red line is at 8,200rpm. The Enzo reaches 60mph in three seconds and has a top speed of 217mph.
The F50 was introduced in 1995 to celebrate Ferrari's 50th anniversary. Only 349 F50s were built. The car is powered by a 4.7-liter V-12 that makes 513 horsepower at 8,000rpm. It gets to 60mph in 3.7 seconds.
The F50 comes with a six-speed manual transmission and a carbon-fiber tub, which represents fairly advanced technology for 1995. Six-speed transmissions are only now becoming widespread on production cars.
This is the racing version of the F50 and is ultrarare, as only three of these cars were built. Ferrari had intended to enter the car as a GT1 class racer, but dropped the project before the car got into competition. Ferrari tuned this car to produce 750 horsepower.
This 288 GTO is one of 272 cars built. Ferrari produced the 288 GTO between 1984 and 1986.
The 288 refers to the car's engine size, as it is powered by a 2.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. This engine produces 400 horsepower and gives the car a top speed of 190mph.
The Daytona, introduced at the 1968 Paris Auto Show, was produced until 1973. It has a 4.4-liter V-12 in a front-engine configuration. The transmission is mounted in back for better weight distribution.
The Daytona's engine produces 352 horsepower, driving the car to 60mph in 5.4 seconds. Its top speed is 174 mph.
This car is one of six built from 1952 to 1953. This particular car was originally owned by King Leopoldo III of Belgium.
The 342 America was designed for the North American market, although only one was sold in the U.S. It has a 4.1-liter V-12 under the hood, which produces 220 horsepower.
This Ferrari F1 race car is one of 12 built between 1971 and 1973. Its 3-liter V-12 produces 460 horsepower.
With only 39 of the beautiful 250 GTOs built, this car has become a serious collector's item, valued at more than $10 million. These cars were produced from 1962 to 1963.
The 250 GTO has a front-mounted 3-liter V-12 producing 300 horsepower. Its top speed is 174mph and it reaches 60mph in 5.8 seconds.
The spare cockpit furnishings show that this car was designed to race. The transmission is a five-speed manual.
