Photos: 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK

Mercedes-Benz announced the official launch of its new crossover, the GLK, at the 2008 Beijing auto show. We first saw the GLK as a concept at the 2008 Detroit auto show.

The all-new GLK crossover joins the expansive Mercedes-Benz line-up in the U.S. as a 2010 model and will be available in 2009.

Mercedes-Benz's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system will be available on the GLK, although the base model will be two-wheel drive. The car is designed with short overhangs and high clearance to handle rugged terrain.

The GLK uses adaptive suspension that stiffens up when it senses performance driving or quick maneuvers, and softens up for more sedate driving and off-road situations.

The cabin electronics include the latest gadgets from Mercedes-Benz, shown in the new C-class, and consist of hard-drive-based navigation, Bluetooth cell phone integration, and digital music.

The COMAND knob is located on the console, below the shifter, in an ergonomically easy-to-reach position. Similar to the interface in the C-class, the COMAND knob lets a driver make selections and choose functions shown on the 5-inch LCD.

Mercedes-Benz hasn't gone into detail about the options that will be offered on the U.S. GLK, but rear-seat DVD entertainment is likely. Although it might not be configured as shown here, this LCD shows the screen style that is used in the C-class and will probably be used in the GLK.

The concept shown at the Detroit auto show had a diesel engine using AddBlue technology to clean up emissions. The production GLK announced for the U.S. will use a gas-powered 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.
