Photos: 2007 Suzuki SX4

The rugged little 2007 Suzuki SX4 makes a sense for outdoors types prone to get stuck in the mud with other bargain-basement cars. But don't expect much in the way of on-road infotainment.

The Suzuki SX4 is a practical, economically priced car that comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Although the car is on the tall side, the front has a sporty character. Suzuki has made a version of the SX4 to compete in the World Rally Championship.

Even tall people will find the ceiling height of the SX4 more than adequate.

The car has four doors and a rear hatch, making it versatile for hauling people or cargo.

With the rear seats up, the cargo area is limited, with just enough space to hold a few bags of groceries. With the seats down, the space becomes much more useful.

There aren't many cabin electronics available for the SX4. Neither navigation nor hands-free cell phone integration is available.

The stereo in the base trim version has a single CD player and an AM/FM radio, and it comes prepped for XM satellite radio.

The CD player can read MP3 and WMA discs, and we like the way it shows ID3 tag information. However, it doesn't sound particularly good.

Going from two-wheel drive (front) to all-wheel drive is particularly easy, with this rocker switch located by the shifter.

Helped along by all-wheel drive and a rigid body, handling in the SX4 isn't bad. Although the car is tall, it didn't have a top-heavy feel.

The gauges are basic, but there is a useful indicator to tell you when the car is in all-wheel drive mode.

The five-speed manual works OK, although it feels a little primitive. We would have preferred a smoother-shifting six-speed transmission.

The SX4 is powered by a two-liter, four-cylinder engine making 143 horsepower, adequate to shoot the little SX4 around corners and off the line.
