The CLA250 will feature Mercedes-Benz’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is the only engine and gearbox combo that's been published.

The CLA250 is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, but it will also be available with Benz's 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

Power output will be rated at 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Quite a bit of effort has been put into making sure that the CLA slips through the air as smoothly as the CLS. The claimed drag coefficient of 0.23 makes the CLA the slipperiest series production vehicle ever -- generating less drag than even the Prius.

Helping the CLA250 to save fuel is an Eco start-stop system that shuts down the engine when stopped and idling (for example, at traffic lights).

The CLA will come standard with Mercedes-Benz's Attention Assist system, which monitors the driver's behaviors and alerts the driver if a lapse of attention is detected or if a break from driving seems necessary.

Collision Prevention Assist
Also standard is the Collision Prevention Assist system, which uses forward radar sensors to detect and warn the driver of imminent collisions at speeds above 4 mph while prepping the brakes for an emergency stop.

Optional Sport package
The standard CLA250 sits on 17-inch wheels, but an optional Sport package bumps them up to 18-inch AMG rollers. Sport body styling and upgraded front brakes complete the package. The sport suspension is standard.

Driver Assistance Package
An optional Driver Assistance Package will add the Lane Keeping Assist system, the Distronic adaptive cruise-control system, blind-spot monitoring, and the Parktronic autonomous parallel-parking system.

Inside the cabin, the CLA250 will feature the automaker's Mbrace2 mobile technology suite. This appears to be the same connected infotainment system that we tested earlier in the SL550 Convertible.

The fit and finish appears to be of typical Mercedes-Benz quality -- which is high -- but the standard, floating screen at the top of the center stack looks a bit too "aftermarket" for my tastes. In standard CLAs this screen will be a 5.8-inch unit, but stepping up to a Multimedia package bumps the size up to the 7-inch screen pictured here.

The Multimedia package also adds a hard-drive-based navigation system, a rearview camera, and voice command, among other things.
