Mitsubishi's MI-Tech PHEV turbine-powered SUV makes its Tokyo debut

Debuting at the Tokyo MOtor Show, the MI-Tech is the coolest concept we've seen from Mitsubishi in a while.

We love the idea of using a gas-turbine engine as a generator. Mitsu says the small powerplant, which acts as a range-extender, can run on diesel, kerosene and alcohol.

Even if a roof and doors were to be added, we don't see this design hitting dealerships anytime soon.

That said, we wouldn't be surprised to see some of the design features make their way into future Mitsubishi SUVs.

 This buggy-like 4WD features a Tonka truck face and a plug-in hybrid heart.

We used to see pie-in-the-sky concepts at auto shows everywhere around the globe, but increasingly, show cars that are this far afield from production are lamentably rare.

The Mi-Tech's chunk, angular aesthetic is a look all its own.

The e-AWD system can apparently power left- and right-side wheels in opposite directions, which ought to make for some truly wicked donuts.

The lack of doors reminds us of a vintage Ford Bronco -- in a good way.

Also cool is the AR-enhanced windshield.
