Mini's new 2017 Countryman bumps up the power and capability

Mini is taking a Clubman approach with its new Countryman crossover, festooning it with a whole bunch of fancy features.

Standard equipment for all Countryman variants includes a panoramic roof, leatherette upholstery, keyless entry, rear parking sensors and a 6.5-inch infotainment display.

The base Cooper Countryman comes with a 134-horsepower, 162-pound-foot, turbocharged I3 engine. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available.

Move up to the Cooper S and the engine grows an extra cylinder, with output bumping north to 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Here, transmission choice is between an eight-speed automatic and a six-speed manual.

Both variants can be optioned with all-wheel drive. Putting AWD on the base Cooper Countryman adds an eight-speed automatic in place of the six-speed.

The Countryman's cargo space is 30 percent more capacious than before.

Of course, there's plenty of space for options, like an 8.8-inch touchscreen navigation system and Qi wireless device charging.

Cooper S variants also receive LED headlights and running lights, sports seats, larger wheels and heated seats.

The Cooper and Cooper S Countryman models go on sale in March 2017.
