Mercedes-Benz modernizes the 2019 CLS450's performance, design and tech

Mercedes-Benz's four-door CLS is back for a third generation with a new look that begins with a more aggressive front end.

The angrier headlamps tuck beneath a furled brow and flank a wider grill.

The coupe-like profile has been maintained, but the details (such as the previous model's deeply sculpted doors) have been smoothed out and simplified.

Out back, the new two-element tail lamps also feature wrap-around design that draws attention to the rounded rear deck.

The CLS still features a rising belt line, but the curvature seems less pronounced without the accenting character line running beneath the window graphic. 

Under the hood, the new CLS450 will be powered by a new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine making 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

It will also be the first new Benz to feature the automaker's 48-volt EQ Boost mild hybrid system, which brings an additional 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to the performance party.

Inside, the cabin echoes the design of the new S Class models, particularly when equipped with the optional dual 12-inch display setup.

Additionally, the new CLS will boast the full might of Mercedes-Benz's new driver aid technology with semi-autonomous features like route-sensitive adaptive cruise control.
