Mazda Hazumi concept previews the next Mazda2 (pictures)

Premiering at the 2014 Geneva auto show, the Mazda Hazumi concept gives us a thinly veiled glimpse at the future of the Mazda2 subcompact.

Antuan Goodwin gained his automotive knowledge the old fashioned way, by turning wrenches in a driveway and picking up speeding tickets. From drivetrain tech and electrification to car audio installs and cabin tech, if it's on wheels, Antuan is knowledgeable.

Kodo: Soul of Motion

Unsurprisingly, the Hazumi feature's the automaker's "Kodo" design language, which features heavily on the new Mazda3, Mazda6, and CX-5.

Little five-door

The diminutive hatchback looks like a three-door but actually has five (counting the hatch, of course). The rear doors blend almost invisibly into the contours of the rear wheel arches.

1.5-liter SkyActiv-D

Behind the inverted, pentagonal grille is a new small-displacement clean diesel engine: the 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D. Power and economy haven't been announced, but Mazda claims it will deliver "exceptional driving performance with powerful torque and linear acceleration, as well as outstanding environmental performance."

Angry headlamps

The headlamps feature LED light-piping that wraps around HID projectors. A carbon-fiber brow gives the Hazumi an angry visage.

Front-wheel-drive

Power will most definitely flow to the front wheels.

Spoilers

The Hazumi's hatch is punctuated with a pair of sandwiched spoilers: one is color-matched to the body, the other leaves its carbon fiber construction exposed.

Exhaust

The exhaust exits through twin tips located in the center of a rear diffuser.

Interior

The cabin appointment is all concept car-chic. Don't expect to see this much metal and Alcantara on Mazda's budget model.

Gauges

The instrument cluster features a large, central tachometer that integrates a digital speedometer and gear indicator.

Center display

Though oddly shaped, the center display pod houses a regular, rectangular LCD.

Head-Up display

Just above the instrument cluster, you'll find a transparent Head-Up display similar to the one that we tested -- but didn't love -- in the 2014 Mazda3.

Rear-seat entertainment

Unusual for a subcompact, the Hazumi features rear seat entertainment in the form of this small, tablet-size display with adjacent touch controls. It's probably not great for watching movies, but does give rear passengers some control over what audio they listen to.

Concept car features

All four of the side doors feature trick door pulls that retract flush with the body when not in use and the rear mirrors are actually digital cameras mounted in carbon fiber stalks. Those features almost certainly won't see production.

Here comes the Mazda2

Beneath the thin veneer of concept car glitz, the Mazda Hazumi looks pretty close to being fully baked. We're expecting to see a 2015 Mazda2 sometime later in the 2014 car show season.
