Lexus RC F Coupe fully unveiled ahead of Detroit (pictures)
The IS-based Lexus RC F Coupe has been unveiled early in anticipation of the 2014 Detroit auto show next week. We expect the RC to carry a 2015 model year.
Flared fenders
The muscular RC F features flared fenders at all four corners wrapping the coupe's 19-inch forged aluminum wheels.
Cabin and steering wheel
The cabin, predictably, looks a lot like the IS sedan's, but this model debuts a "Lexus-first elliptical cross-section thick-grip steering wheel with optimum placement of paddle gear shifts," according to the automaker's release. Ideally, the new wheel should fit better in the driver's hand.
High-backed sport seats
The coupe's high back seats feature embossed "F" logos on the headrests and are available in one of five different leather trim colors, each with contrasting stitching.
The end of Lexus Remote Touch?
Instead of Lexus' Remote Touch Controller, the RC F appears to have a small touch pad. Could this be the end of Lexus Remote Touch or just the next evolution?
Motorized spoiler
A motorized spoiler on the rear deck rises at speeds of 50 mph and above to enhance high-speed stability and retracts when traveling below 25 mph for a clean look.
IS-F inspired vents
These fender vents behind the front wheel had me convinced that the RC could debut with an IS-F badge.
LED headlamps?
Lexus has finessed the IS sedan's front light clusters. They now appear to integrate better with the L-shaped LED indicator lights. The headlamps themselves appear to be fully LED illuminated.
Unique tail lights
The tail lights wrap around the corners of the vehicle.
The hood sits higher than the IS sedan's to accommodate a hood vent and a larger engine.
V-8 engine
Lexus tells us that the RC-F will be powered by a V-8 engine. We're assuming that it's the same 5.0-liter V-8 that powers the current IS-F sport sedan. Stated power should be at least 416 ponies.
Coupe profile
Rather than just shave two doors from the IS' profile, the RC F Coupe features a revised roofline that slopes more aggressively.
Transmission
We're also guessing that the power will flow to the rear wheels via the automaker's eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission.
F Sport accessories
Available carbon fiber F Sport components will allow drivers to customize their ride.
More details in Detroit
We expect to learn more about the RC F Coupe at the 2014 Detroit auto show next week.
