Lamborghini Urus SUV concept (photos)

The stuff of rumors up until now, the Urus represents Lamborghini's design direction for an SUV. The intent behind making the third car in its model line-up an SUV is to broaden its market, giving customers a Lamborghini that can be driven every day.

The Lamborghini Urus concept shown here actually dates from 2012, but it's probably still our best look at what a future SUV from the Italian automaker will look like.

All-wheel-drive has become a standard feature on Lamborghini's sport cars, so t was, of course, included in the Urus concept. The ride height was also adjustable to provide greater clearance or better highway performance.

With a length of just over 16 feet, the 2012 Urus concept was comparable to other contemporary luxury SUVs. But Lamborghini kept the overall height down to about 5 and half feet. Given its still-massive 24-inch wheels, that made for a very sleek body.

Lamborghini says an active rear spoiler aided the Urus' aerodynamics depending on the driving situation. Also note the four hexagonal exhaust outlets integrated with the rear body shell.

A production Urus is expected later this year. Finally.

While the exterior of the 2012 Urus concept still looks somewhat fresh, it's the interior that's dated. Expect the eventual production car to look rather different than this show car.

The concept's center touch screen included the usual cabin tech features, such as navigation, audio and phone. The screen shown here included information useful for off-road situations.

Helping keep this concept's weight low is a material that Lamborghini called Forged Composite. It made up the frames of the seats, which had their own unique, multiple pad design.

Rather than the typical rear bench in an SUV, the 2012 Urus concept used two rear buckets, giving it seating for only four people. It's possible the production Urus will maintain this configuration.

A touchscreen between the rear seats afforded passengers access to entertainment and navigation functions.
