Hyundai heats up SEMA 2013

LAS VEGAS -- Honda used to be the uncontested kind of the import tuner crowd, but Korean automaker Hyundai has been firing on all cylinders lately. This year, the automaker hit the show floor with six custom examples of its Genesis Coupe and Veloster Turbo sport compacts. Some are stylish; some are powerful. All are very cool.

Bisimoto Engineering Genesis Coupe

Hang around the SEMA Show in Las Vegas for long enough and you're sure to hear the name Bisimoto Engineering mentioned around the import tuning crowd. The bow-tied Bisi Ezerioha himself was on hand at Hyundai's booth to present his team's latest creation: a custom Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8.

1,000 horsepower

Bisimoto is know for its high-horsepower creations and this 2013 Genesis Coupe is no exception. Thanks to a pair of Turbonetics turbochargers and a parts sheet longer than we have space to list, the factory 3.8-liter V-6 engine's output has been coaxed up to 1,000 horsepower.

Twin Turbonetics turbochargers

The twin Bisimoto/Turbonetics BTX6462 turbochargers force air into the six cylinders with the excess being vented through a Godzilla blow-off valve. I wasn't able to fit my fist into these turbos, but I'd keep fingers and small pets clear.

Fully upgraded

The mods don't stop in the engine bay. This example has also been upgraded with a Bisimoto roll cage, Buddy Club racing seats and harness, Progress coil-over suspension components, and anti-roll bars.

Around back, the Genesis has been outfitted with a drag parachute.

Incurve wheels

Incurve 20-inch aluminum wheels are 9.5-inches wide up front and 11-inches on the rear axle. All four corners are wrapped in Toyo Tires Proxes R888 R-Compound tires.

ARK Performance Legato Concept

Where the Bisimoto Genesis Coupe is all about raw power, the ARK Performance Legato Concept sets out to blend "exotic design, tuned performance and luxury coupe interior ambiance."

Custom design

ARK states that every body panel of the Legato Concept has been modified from the stock Genesis Coupe design. The result is certainly unique.

Subwoofer

Where most stock applications seek to hide a premium audio system's subwoofer, custom cars tend to flaunt their big speakers. The ARK Legato Concept, despite its claims of luxury, is no exception, displaying its giant Rockford-Fosgate subwoofer under the rear glass the way a supercar would its engine.

The Rockford Fosgate premium sound system piggybacks on the stock Hyundai infotainment system. Peek at that center stack and you'll see the second display literally sitting atop the OEM screen.

Android-powered instruments

This custom digital instrument cluster is my favorite upgrade to the Legato Concept's cabin. A look closely and you'll see the telltale icons of the Android operating system at the bottom of the LCD. Either ARK has embedded an Android tablet in the dash or is mirroring its screen.

4.0-liters, 400 horsepower

Hidden under the hood, the Genesis Coupe's production-based Hyundai 3.8-liter Lambda V-6 engine has been stroked to 4.0-liters and now outputs 400 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. The Coupe has also been outfitted with matching chassis, suspension, and handling upgrades.

EGR Night Racer Veloster Turbo

Pictures don't do justice to the retina-searing yellow paint job on this EGR Night Racer Veloster Turbo. This custom color, dubbed Yellowcake, was created special by EGR for this custom Hyundai in collaboration with the paint experts at PPG and Barry’s Speed Shop.

Wide body kit

A custom fender flare kit allows EGR to cram 10-inch wide DPE 3-Piece lightweight racing wheels wrapped in Toyo semi-slick racing tires at all four corners. Peek between the spokes and you'll find oversized Brembo brakes.

ONEighty custom headlights

The name 'Night Racer' implies that this Veloster is built for, well, racing at night. As a result, it's been upgraded with ONEighty custom headlights with HID projectors.

The Veloster's 1.6-liter turbocharged engine gets a relatively soft tune by Bisimoto Engineering, boosting its output to 250 horsepower.

A full roll cage and Takara racing seats and harnesses keep the driver and a front co-driver safe and held in place while speeding through the night.

Veloster Turbo by Fox Marketing

The renderings of this custom Veloster Turbo built by Fox Marketing previewed a yellow/gold car, but the hot hatchback that was unveiled at the 2013 SEMA Show was coated with a gorgeous BASF R-M Onyx HD Waterborne SkyAqua paint. The hue shifted from a bright blue to a vibrant mint green as the light changes danced over its surface.

370 horsepower engine

Pop the hood and you'll find a 370 horsepower version of Hyundai’s 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder direct-injected, turbocharged engine. Of course, the engine cover and strut tower bar have been treated with the same SkyAqua paint as the exterior.

Turbo upgraded and tuned

Upgrades chosen to boost the power are built around a new 845 Motorsports turbo upgrade that includes a new BorgWarner EFR turbo, front-mounted intercooler, AEM water/methanol injection system, VP Racing 101-octane performance fuel, and an ECU tune from SeoulfulRacing.

Chassis and suspension

Beneath the chassis -- which has been stiffened by ImportShark mid-brace, chassis brake, lower tie bar, cross-bracing, and sway bars -- ARK Performance 35-way adjustable coil-overs keep the wheels stuck to the road.

Chuck Norris approved

When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down. Apparently, he also approves of Fox Marketing's Veloster.

Pangilinan stated that this custom is designed to represent the attainable daily driver that an enthusiast could build.

Cost-effective mods

Under the hood, you'll find the Genesis' 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Upgrades are limited to cost-effective mods, such as an AEM cold air intake, ARK Performance exhaust, turbo downpipe, and friction-reducing Lucas Oil.

Wide body, flared fenders

Like many enthusiasts, Pangilinan put a lot of effort into perfecting the ride height, body-to-wheel balance, and handling. KW Variant 3 coil-overs, 19-inch MORR VS52 concave mono-forged wheels in mystic black with Toyo Proxes T1R tires, and a Brembo Gran Turismo brake kit with oversized 15-inch calipers. A flared fender kit has been blended into the body work for a wider stance.
