Honda slaps a turbo on the Civic Type R
To keep up with other high-performance sport compacts on the markets, Honda decided to turbocharged the Civic Type R. However, unlike rivals such as the Ford Focus RS, Volkswagen Golf R and Subaru WRX STI, Honda continued to stick with front-wheel-drive for the fourth-gen Civic Type R.
In place of the a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine, the fourth-gen receives a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 306 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.
The only transmission available on the Civic Type R is a six-speed manual.
To improve handling, a mechanical limited-slip differential is standard on the Civic Type R.
Adjustable two-stage dampers are installed on the Civic Type R.
To cope with torque steer, the front struts get separate steering knuckle, and Agile Handling Assist torque-vectoring applies light braking to the inner wheel for quicker cornering.
Like all Type R models, a big rear wing is featured on the back of the Civic.
The turbocharged Civic Type R has a top speed of 167 mph.
An R+ button stiffens the suspension dampers, sharpens throttle response and unlocks the turbo engine's full fury.
