Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500
Harman Kardon is best known in the automotive world for its audio equipment, but the company has taken a leap into the crowded world of portable GPS devices with the unveiling of its Guide + Play GPS-500. In addition to its wayfaring duties, the GPS-500 can be used as a multimedia player, with support for a range of digital audio and video formats.
For movie playback, the GPS-500's 4-inch WQVGA hi-resolution LCD wide screen can be used to play MPEG-4 and WMV9 files. Its headphone jack also enables it to be used as a portable video player.
The GPS-500 features 2GB of internal flash memory accessible thorough a USB 2.0 port, as well as up to 4GB of additional external capacity via its built-in SD-card reader. The system can be used to play MP3, WMA, and WAV files, which are navigated using a series of onscreen menus.
With a destination programmed, the GPS-500 plots a route quickly courtesy of a duo-core Atlas 2 processor. In a very cool feature, the navigation system zooms in at intersections, giving drivers a close-up view in order to avoid going wrong at complex junctions.
The GPS-500 uses Tele Atlas maps for its GPS data, which can be updated via the device's USB cable. Navigation features include a points-of-interest database and spoken turn-by-turn voice guidance.
The GPS-500 can be mounted on the dash or windscreen using a dedicated suction cup. It can be charged while in the car by using a cigarette-lighter cable. The device has a battery life of around five hours and can be recharged using either an A/C adapter or a mini USB cable, both of which are included with the device.
