At about a third of an inch thick, the Nuvi 3790T is Garmin's thinnest GPS device yet.
The 3790T is built around a capacitive 4.3-inch touch screen. It's a good size for visibility without sacrificing portability.
Laid next to the more conventionally shaped Nuvi 1690 (another 4.3-inch unit), you can see how thin the 3790T's is.
The home screen should be familiar to anyone who's seen a Garmin in the last 10 years; not much has changed here. What is new, but not pictured, is a portrait orientation triggered by the unit's internal accelerometer.
Look closely and you'll see that the Nuvi subtly renders terrain and elevation data on its maps.
In major cities, the 3790T also displays 3D building data when zoomed in close enough.
When approaching freeway exits, graphic lane guidance shows users what lanes are valid for the chosen route, complete with road sign information.
The rear panel consists of a black brushed metal with a glossy plastic section where the speaker and GPS antenna live.
The car dock features a suction cup mount and a connection for the 12-volt car charger.
Garmin has included the FM traffic receiver in the power cable's wire, so you must plug in before you can receive traffic updates.
Traffic updates are free and ad-supported. Occasionally, users will see text ads like this one in the traffic menu or on the map screen.
The car dock also features a more powerful speaker that increases in-car audibility of spoken directions and calls.
After speaking a trigger phrase, the Nuvi goes into voice command mode.
The voice command trigger phrase can be customized by the user. The system will even show you how accurate and unique your chosen phrase is.
Hands-free calling is unlocked once a Bluetooth-enabled phone is paired.
