Fourth-generation Toyota RAV4 makes its world debut (pictures)

Toyota completely redesigns its RAV4 small SUV for the 2013 model year, bringing its style and tech up to par with the rest of the lineup.

The 2013 RAV4 features an all-new design with a front fascia that borrows from Toyota's Camry and Avalon models.

I'm also getting hints of Nissan Murano from the new RAV4 when viewed from this angle.

The RAV4 seats up to five passengers between its two rows of seating.

Like the previous generation, the 2013 RAV will be available with all-wheel drive. The new system is an on-demand type that behaves like (and delivers the efficiency of) a front-wheel-drive vehicle under most circumstances.

The RAV4 is available with a power lift gate with an adjustable maximum opening height, which should keep drivers who park in low-ceiling garages from dinging their paint.

The standard (and only) RAV4 engine option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that outputs 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque.

Toyota is discontinuing the RAV4's V-6 engine option for fuel economy reasons. Drivers wanting the extra pair of cylinders will have to step up to the larger Highlander.

The cabin tech options available in the RAV4 appear to mirror those of other Toyota models. At the entry level is the standard touch-screen display audio system. At the top of the heap is Toyota's Entune infotainment system with its suite of Entune apps.

The RAV4 will be available in three trim levels. The entry LE model will feature the Display Audio system. The XLE model is upgraded with sport bucket seats clad in premium fabric and the option to add the Entune system. Finally, the Limited model gets leather trim, available blind-spot monitoring, and the option to upgrade to a JBL GreenEdge premium audio system.

The RAV4 will feature Sport and Eco drive programs that adjust its throttle map and performance. In Eco mode, the FWD RAV4 will do an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city and 31 on the highway. Adding AWD subtracts a few mpg, resulting in an estimated 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

Toyota isn't ready to announce pricing for the 2013 RAV4, but assured all in attendance at the 2012 LA Auto Show that it would be "a great value."

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 will hit dealerships in January 2013.
