This year's Indy 500 pace car is once again the Chevrolet Camaro (pictures)

This year marks the 27th time that a Chevrolet car has set the pace for the Indy 500.

The first time Chevrolet led the pack was in 1948.

Roger Penske will be the man behind the wheel this time around.

Penske's celebrating a milestone of his own -- his 50th anniversary as a team owner.

The pace car itself is based on the Camaro SS.

The Camaro SS packs a 455-horsepower, 6.2-liter LT1 V-8.

In fact, it's the most powerful Camaro SS ever built.

Four identical pace cars will roll up at the race.

All four cars will feature Abalone White paint and exclusive Indy 500 graphics on the side.

Several aesthetic enhancements to the pace car can be found on the Camaro 50th Anniversary package, which goes on sale this summer.

The 50th Anniversary package includes unique wheels, a special grille, a body-color front splitter, orange brake calipers and a special black leather interior.

The package also includes loads of badges and emblems, naturally.

You can attach the new package to either the Camaro 2LT (I-4 or V-6) or the Camaro 2SS (V-8).

The package is also available for both coupes and convertibles.

The 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place on May 24.
