BMW 3.0 CLS Homage R concept at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance (pictures)

In celebration of 40 years in the United States, BMW brought this 3.0 CSL Hommage R concept to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, Calif.

The Hommage R concept features the red, white, and blue BMW racing livery of the original racing 3.0 CSL and an aero-package that resembles the one that earned it the nickname "the Batmobile."

The concept rolls on gold wheels. No mention is made of the powerplant. I like to assume it uses the 1975 CSL's 200-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, but that's almost certainly not true.

The concept's front end is, according to the automaker, one of the widest and lowest in BMW history.

BMW's hexagonal four-eyes feature blue LED Xs that echo the taped Xs on endurance racer headlamps.

The interior is largely devoid of luxuries, this being a racing concept. The only "comforts" are a pair of vents that flow ambient air to the driver.

The steering yoke is the centerpoint of the simplified interface. The Hommage R lacks traditional gauges, instead making use of an enhanced head-up display.

One of the primary differences between the CSL 3.0 Hommage R concept and the yellow Hommage concept debuted earlier this year is the racing aerodynamic package. The Hommage R is a race car, the Hommage is street ready.

The concept features a wide body kit. Invisible in the daylight are strips of LEDs that extend from the taillights and connect on the spoiler, framing the rear end at night.

The move to cameras over wing mirrors was for aerodynamic advantage, not technological wows.

Exhaust from the unspecified engine exits through side pipes just aft of the doors.

The L in CSL stands for lightweight. A peek into the door sills showcases the Hommage R's composite construction.

The R concept's cabin does feature a few safety considerations including a fire suppression system on the center console and helmets stored behind the seats.

The original BMW 3.0 CSL could be found on the streets and on the racetrack in 1975.
